Next Generation Learning

Standards and Shifts
NYS Next Generation Learning Standards
• All of our curriculum and lessons are derived from the New York
State Next Generation Learning Standards. Parents can visit the
Engage NY website to access the third grade standards for ELA and
Math.
www.nysed.gov/next-generation-learning-standards
www.engageny.org
Standards Shifts - 2nd to 3rd Grade
• In 3rd grade, students are shifting from "learning to read" to
"reading to learn" and from "learning to write" to "writing to
communicate"
• 3rd grade contains more non-fiction and informative texts that
center upon Social Studies and Science topics
• These academic shifts will help them prepare for the NYS
assessments in ELA and Math in the Spring.
.
20192020

NYS Assessments
• Starting in 3rd grade, students will be taking the New York
State ELA and Math exams.

2020 ELA Test: March 25-27, 2020

2020 Math Test: April 21-23, 2020

• The state has us provide Acuity and Benchmark Assessments

before the NY State Test. This also helps us track the students
growth and needs in order to prepare them.

• Please use the following website for more information about 3rd
grade testing, state standards and expectations:

Math Curriculum
Envisions Math
• This year, we will be using the Envisions curriculum
• Third grade is a very important year for mathematics. Learners will dive into
multiplication and division, becoming fluent in facts
• Students will use their understanding of number and operations to solve real
world multi-step problems.
• As the year advances, students will use their understanding of numbers to
represent fractions, determine measurement and calculate elapsed time.
• Third graders are also introduced to measurement using perimeter, area and
volume.
• Third grade focuses on conceptual understanding using diagrams, accountable
conversation, explanations and representations to demonstrate their
understanding.
Each night the students
should be studying their
multiplication facts. It is
important that these facts
are memorized and become
fluent!

Writer's Workshop

Enduring Understanding/Big Ideas:

• Third graders grow as writers as they write more structured
and complex texts.
• They will use their notebooks to generate ideas and collect
thoughts.
• Third graders will work through the workshop model,
developing a deep understanding of the “writing process”,
drafting, revising and publishing texts within different genres.
• Third grade studies narrative, persuasive and informational
writing.
• In third grade, students continue to become more comfortable
with technology using computers to research and publish texts.
• Writing stamina is a big focus this year - we work on building
stamina by writing independently for longer periods of time
20192020

Ready Gen- Reading

Enduring Understanding/Big Ideas:

• Third grade students will be using the skills acquired in earlier grades to
develop their comprehension and become more independent readers.
• Third grade reading will focus on teaching kids how to think, talk and write
about what they read in deeper and more detailed ways using critical thinking.
• Students are encouraged to develop independent points of view that are
substantiated by text evidence.
• Reading stamina is built by reading more which develops their fluency and
vocabulary. Readers learn problem solving strategies to support independent
comprehension.
20192020

Fountas & Pinnell Reading Levels

Students' reading levels are assessed three times a year. This
chart shows grade appropriate reading levels and the progress
expected throughout the year. Towards the end of the year,
independent reading levels are taken into consideration for
promotion to the next grade level.
20192020

Amplify -Science
Third grade science is supported by the Mrs. Gottlieb, third grade classroom
teachers and the Amplify Science curriculum. Through this curriculum,
students will learn concepts across the disciplines of Life Science, Earth and
Space Science, Physical Science , and Engineering Design.

Together, the units address 100% of the Next Generation Science Standards
for grades K-8 and a significant number of the Common Core State Standards
for English Language Arts, Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects, and
Math. Every unit in the curriculum has hands-on materials to allow students to
roll up their sleeves and conduct hands-on investigations. Each lesson also
incorporates literacy elements such as reading informative texts and writing
detailed scientific explanations in response to research and investigations.
20192020

Social Studies

Third grade social studies is supported by the NYC Passports Curriculum.

Through this curriculum, students will develop an understanding of global
communities, culture, geography, language, technology and growth of civilization
overtime. Students begin with a study of geography, learning map skills.
Third graders will then explore various cultures including China, Nigeria and
Peru. Students will be investigating cultures through case studies involving
research and analysis.
Key Points:
• Focus on global and historical communities
• Identifying the connection between culture and environment.
• Study and use maps to gain a deeper understanding of how geography impacts a
community
• Develop an understanding how communities establish economic systems

Tae Kwon Do - Grade Level

Enrichment
Much More than “Kicking & Punching!”
Although many people think the martial arts are just about fighting, the
truth is that the physical “kicking and punching” are really just the “tools”
that are used to teach the more important, and MUCH more valuable
lessons about “yourself”.
Through the practice of physical self-defense skills, students follow a
blueprint for a successful life based on discipline, focus, and perseverance.

Korea Taekwondo-
KTKD has become a
landmark of Flushing
martial arts!
