CHAPTER 3

METHOD AND PROCEDURE

Research Design

This study used the descriptive survey method of research which obtained

information concerning the present situation of the respondents with respect to the variables

(Key,1997).

The descriptive research method describes the nature of a condition as it takes

place during the time of the study and to explore the causes of a particular condition. The

researchers opted to use this kind of research considering the desire to acquire first hand data

from the respondents so as to formulate rational and sound conclusions and recommendations

for the study .According to Creswell(1994),the descriptive method of research is to gather

information about the present condition .

Since the study is focused on the study of the Reasons why Senior High School

STEM Students in ACT are sleepy during their class hours,the descriptive survey method is the

most appropriate method to use.


Subjects of the Study

The researchers considered the Grade 11 and Grade 12 STEM students in Asian

College of Technology comprising of 30 members,male and female.They were the chosen

respondents because their strand has to do with this research.Moreover,Majority of the students

are evidently more sleep deprived during their class hours.In addition to this,being sleepy during

class hours can greatly affect their academic performance.

Description of Research Instrument

A questionnaire was used in gathering data.The questionnaire has only 1 part.The

questionnaire consisted of items that determined the most and the least reason why Senior High

School STEM Students in ACT are sleepy during class hours.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers personally administered the research instruments to the

respondent. They will confer and discuss the significance of the study and accomplish the

distribution of the instruments properly.

The respondents were given 20 minutes to accomplish the questionnaire to prevent

them from giving hasty responses. The researchers will go from one section to another on

collecting the accomplished questionnaires.

After the questionnaires have been accomplished ,the results were tallied and

tabulated. These data became the bases of analysis and interpretation.


Statistical Treatment Applied

In determining the most and the least reason why Senior High School STEM students

in ACT are Sleepy during class hours, Thurstone Scale will be used. It used a 1 to 10 scale

ranking the items to weakest indicator to strongest indicator.

Point Scale Verbal Interpretation

10 9.5-10 Most Valid Reason

2-9 1.5-9.4 Middle Valid Reason

1 0.5-1.4 Least Valid Reason
