REPORT

Water has a huge number of impurities. The water from the environment is piped into a
water-treatment facility where impurities are removed, and bacteria are killed while it undergoes
in treatment dissolved solids are determined in the water. In this experiment, we are to determine
the total, dissolved, and suspended solids in a water sample. We are also to determine the ions
present in the solids of a water sample.

The experiment was divided into three parts. The first part is about getting the total
dissolved solids of the filtered water sample. Otherwise, if the collected water sample isn't filtered,
this oversight will result in the TDS (total dissolved solids) reported value to be too high because
not filtering the water what you will get is the TSS( total suspended solids) and the mass of solid
would weigh more. Be sure that the evaporating dish was properly cleaned and dried otherwise the
reported TDS will be low because mass of evaporating dish reported as higher and when subtracted
to the mass of solid plus the dish (heated) the result will be lower. Also, take note that the splattered
solids must be part of the mass of solid and the dish otherwise the reported TDS will be low
because the mass of solid is lower than it should be. Remember that all sample water must be dried
after heating the evaporating dish otherwise the TDS will be reported as high because the mass of
wet sample will be included in the mass of solid and dish which will result to a higher value.
Remember that after heating the water sample and it completely dries and letting it cools there will
be condensation outside the evaporating dish. This moist would make the reported TDS as higher
because it was included in the mass of dissolved solid and the dish which results with a higher
value.

In the second part of experiment the total suspended solid and total solid was determined.
Here are some of errors that we might have encountered. If the unfiltered water sample was not
heater to total dryness, the result of the reported TS ( total solids ) will be too high because the
mass of TDS and TSS would increase and the sum of those two is the TS which also increases.
Assuming that the water sample has a relatively high percent of volatile solid material. The mass
of dissolved solids will be unaffected the same with the mass of total suspended solids but the
mass of total solid would be recorded as too high because of the presence of the volatile solid.

In the last part of experiment, the solid was tested what compound was in it. When several
drops of 0.010 M AgNO3, was added and a white precipitate forms it means that the sample has
halides (chlorine).
CONCLUSION

From this experiment, we got to know the amount of total, dissolved, and suspended solids
as well as the ions present in the water sample. The total dissolved solids can be acquired by
filtration water sample and subsequently making it evaporate to dryness whereas the amount of
total solids can be acquired by evaporating the water sample to dryness without the filtration
process. From our gathered data, we got the value of 9.4057 g solids/ kg sample, ppt as total
dissolved solids, 10. 3538 g solids/ kg sample, ppt as total solids and 0.9481 g solids/ kg sample,
ppt as total suspended solids. For the determination of ions present in the sample, we observed
reaction induced by adding different solutions to the solid sample. We concluded that there are
carbonates, bicarbonates, chlorides and calcium in the test sample.
