CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

College students choose their job fields for many reasons. The factors that affect this decision
include family, passion, salary, and past experiences. In addition to these factors, race and gender can
also affect what field a student may choose. Some professions have greater percentages of acertain
gender or race. Another thing that plays a big role in a student’s decision of what field to study is the
people or role models in his or her life. These role models can include a parent, teacher, or a recent
employer.Identifying these factorswould give parents, educators, and industry an idea as to where
students place most of theirtrust in the career selectionprocess. It would also allow students to
examineprocesses they use for careerselection. There are so many factors that play into why students are
coming to college as “undecided.” It isn’t just because they can’t decide what to study; much of it has to
do with societal pressures to obtain a college degree and the hundreds of majors from which students can
choose.Choosing the right career path is becoming more and more important for young students today.
Students have to take into account many things when choosing a career and college major. Many
factors can influence a student’s decision, including parents, coaches, religious figures, or any
role models in a student’s life.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Decision- making is the logical way of setting one's mind to choose amidst the possibilities to
satisfyman's ease. This is true as a stated that good decision making is an essential skill for career
success. But what if the students are not good in decision making about the course to take after
graduating? College students have their own choices of what career choice they prefer. Picking a career
is one of the biggest and most challenging decisions of every college students. Most of them are all
undecided, According to statistics more than 70 percent of the students are all undecided what to take
career. In making decision most of the time parents say what is the "right" or "best" course. With good
intention parents decided what their children should take. Fear of failure , The element of the unknown
often rears its head in a search for the right career choice. A person may fear that she won't like the
career once she commits to it. She may fear that she won't be good at it. Ways to allay these and similar
fears include thoroughly researching the job and its characteristics, talking to people who have held the
same type of job for several years and spending some time as an observer at the desired place of
employment. Lack of Awareness, A lack of awareness about skills, values and interests can cause
problems when trying to choose a career. While this is a typical problem for people newly entering or
re-entering the workforce, it can affect anyone who is out of touch with what he wants from a career.
Career aptitude tests and career counseling can help a person determine the type of careers he should
pursue. Career choice Barriers, Certain careers require job seekers to attain specific levels or types of
education. If the career aperson is truly interested in requires advanced education, but he needs to
start working now, the situation can create indecisiveness about choosing another career in which he
has little or no interest. One way to tackle this obstacle is to find a lower-level job in the career field of
interest. At the same time, they can pursue the advanced education they need to make their dream career a
reality. When students are choosing a career, they may not have all the information about the job they
are pursuing. The job may involve more math or science than students are prepared to study. Students
may like one aspect of a certain job and not understand what other aspects come with that profession. For
example some students may want to be veterinarians because they enjoy being around animals, but
students may not realize how much school work is required to become a veterinarian. Also, students may
not be open to all jobs in their area of interest. Over time, certain job fields have peaked in numbers
versus other job fields; this can form a pattern.

We are well aware that there is lot of hindrances when it comes to deciding of what career to
take by college students as they step-in in a new chapter of their life after graduating. That is why
deciding wisely for your career to take while you’re at your college level is essential. Conducting this
study is more likely “getting to know” to every college students in Saint Francis of Assisi College on how
they were hindered by circumstances in life and what factors that influence and affects them in decision
making for career choice. Is it financial? Different life roles? Were forced by parents just to follow the
path they took? Cultural background?economic and social conditions of life? or it could be you don’t
really have a passion for your future career that you don’t wanted to spend time for analyzing and
meditating for the career you wanted to take.

This aim of this research is to guide you to choose the right course for you along with the passion in your
heart. Your passion for you course ,and for your future career. Because the secret to happiness is being
able to love whatever it is you do in life. When entering college
as an exploratory student, General Education courses can be great for major exploration. Find a General
Education course offered through a major you're considering. If you love the subject matter, you've made
a huge step in finding the right major for you. If the disciplinary perspective is not one you want to
pursue, no worries: you've still earned General Education credit needed to graduate. It's a no-risk way to
explore your options.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK (WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE THEORY?)

Groccia’s(1992) position was that students’ externally-acquired attitudes and expectations affect the
outcome of their college experience and that “students who are pursuing identified majors and following
career paths find it easier to adjust to the academic, social, and emotional demands that come with college
life” (p. 41). In terms of the persistence theories of Tinto (1993) and Braxton (2000b), external influences
affect the career choices of students, but once these choices are made, students are more successful in
integrating into the school’s internal community, which, in turn, facilitates persistence to successful
completion of the career training program.

college students?) college students of Saint Francis of Assisi College.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The contribution of this topic is the Factors such as interest in field, academic ability, familiarity,
