ELEMENTS OF POETRY

DICTION Our understanding the

literal definition of and the
relations among the words.
Diction in poetry refers to the
poet’s description of his
experience in words combining
its actual and suggested meaning
Even as with toddling steps
I enter into a new world
Embark on a quest
The feelings of Words
Creating mood in Poetry
Mood is the feeling the reader
gets when reading poem.
Writers use words to create a
special mood or feeling.
The Bliss of Love
The first time he pressed
his lips to kiss me
And it only reached my forehead
And from there it grew in height
For then the second time
He sought my lips, but missed
Half-falling on my cheek
Oh! That was quite near
The third upon my lips was felt the bliss of
love in tender perfect state Since then I can
say My one My all My own VS Lamucho
Bliss Of Love (1972)
The sounds of words The writers
play with the sounds of words to
create pleasing effect and mood
or in certain cases, creating
interesting sound patterns for
emphasis of both the meanings
and the mood of the poem. The
repetition of the same initial
sounds in words is known as
alliteration
Sleep not in peace
The dream is not yet fully carved
Hard the wood, but harder the blows
Yet the molave will stand;
Yet the molave monument will rise;
And Gods walk on brown legs.
The rhyme on Poetry
When the sounds at the end of
the words are repeated, the
result is rhyme.
If I can stop one heart from beating
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again
I shall not live in vain
Imagery With careful selection of
words, the poet can make the
readers see, feel, smell, hear or
even flavor the things described.
The words and phrases the poets
uses to describe is what he calls
Sensory details.
Figurative Language
When we use figurative
language, we mean something
other than the actual meaning of
the words.
There are at least 5 distinct
categories:
Metaphor Simile Hyperbole
Symbolism Personification
Rhythm and Meter
A poem achieves the quality of
heightened musical effect
through the use of rhythm which
is the repetition at measured
intervals of stressed and
unstressed syllables. Rhythm
therefore, is the regular rise and
fall of stress. Meter, which is
closely related to rhythm is the
measure of poetic rhythm. A
meter with one unstressed beat
followed by one stressed beat is
called lambic; a meter with two
unstressed beats followed by
one stressed beat is called
anapestic.
Metrical language is referred to
as verse.
