1 a) What is Handoff?

2 a) With the necessary Timing diagram, explain how a call to a mobile user initiated by landline

c) Discuss the salient features of W-CDMA. 6

3 a) With necessary illustrations, discuss different handoff strategies adopted in cellular radio
systems. 8
b) A spectrum of 30MHz is allocated to a wireless FDD cellular system which uses two 25KHz
simplex channels to provide full duplex voice and control channels, compute the number of
channels available per cell if a system uses (i) Four cell reuse (ii) Seven cell reuse
(iii) 12-Cell reuse. If 1MHz of allocated spectrum is dedicated to control channels. Determine
an equitable distribution of control channels and voice channel in each cell for the each of
three systems. 6
c) A hexagonal cell with a four-cell system has a radius of 1.387Km. A total of 60 channels are
used within the entire system. If the load per user is 0.029 Erlangs, and =1call/hour, compute
the following for an Erlang C system that has a 5% probability of delayed call:
(i) How many users per square kilometer will this system support?
(ii) What is the probability that a delayed call will be waiting for more than 10 seconds?
(iii)What is the probability that a call will be delayed for more than 10 seconds? 6

4 a) Assuming free space propagation, a receiver is located 10 Km away from a 50 watt


transmitter. The carrier frequency is 900Mhz, antenna gain at transmitter and receiver is 1 and
2 respectively calculate (i) Power Received at the receiver (ii) The magnitude of the E-Field
at the receiver antenna. (iii) The power flux Density (iv) The rms voltage applied to the
receiver input. The receiver has 50 impedance and is matched to the receiver. 8
b) With necessary sketch, explain the two ray ground reflection model for radio wave
propagation. 6
c) With necessary expression, explain Okumura Model for outdoor radio propagation. 6

5 a) In the U.S. digital cellular system, if fc =900MHz and the mobile velocity is 70Km/Hr,
calculate the received carrier frequency if the mobile (i) Moves directly towards the
transmitter (ii) Directly away from transmitter (iii) In a direction perpendicular to the
direction of the arrival of the transmitted signal. 4
b) With relevant mathematical Expression, define RMS delay spread, coherence bandwidth,
Doppler spread and coherence Time. 8
c) With necessary block diagram, explain minimum shift keying transmitter and receiver. 8
