retired after 36 years as a teacher –
the last 22 as a High School Head in
Dereham – Norfolk. Still loves schools.

MA, 1975. Former School Teacher in
Southgate and Hinckley between 1958
and 1963. Served as a Senior Lecturer
at University of Leicester and then at De
Montfort University. Worked for many
years with the University of Leicester
Department of Adult Education, and
since 1971 with the Open University.

A member of the RTPI since 1964;
followed by a fulfilling career mainly
with Cheshire C.C. in strategic,
regional and environmental planning.
Now happily, actively retired.

Hillingdon’s Chief Advisor on H.M.I. and

BSc, 1964. Travelling (whilst retired)
to Arctic and Antarctic regions, to
Ecuador, Galapagos, Argentina, and
to New Zealand. President Elect for
Middlesex County ASA and continues
to officiate in swimming and water
polo. Volunteer for 2012 Olympics.
Nichols Harvey, Geography PhD,
1964. In active retirement after
40 years as Professor of Biology at
University of Colorado – Boulder.
Pokrant Robert, Sociology BA, 1964.
Graduated in 1964 and went on to live
in the USA, Canada, Nigeria, Australia
and Sweden. Returned to the UK in
1972 to complete a PhD at Cambridge.
Has lived in Perth since 1987 and is
currently Professor of Anthropology at
Curtin University. Visits the UK regularly
and would love to hear from old friends
from between 1961 and 1964.

1965. Spent many years in Town and
Country Planning before changing
course in 1982 to become an Institute
Chiropodist. Sadly lost his wife Janet
in 2002. Worked until 2009 for Dorset
County Council as a Passenger Assistant
caring for the transport of SEN children.

Director in 2006 but continued
working as Finance Manager.

Australia after a career in Australian
Public Service in Canberra and three
separate periods in USA accompanying
her husband. Also worked for 3
years at World Bank, Washington.

College, London in 1982. Now gardens
and records bumblebees (for the
BWARS), dragonflies and butterflies.

AIDS treatment and training.

1966. Retired and enjoying theatre,
music, art and antique fairs, cats,
dog walking, table tennis, gardening,
books and travel, especially to
archaeological sites. Some voluntary
work to keep my hand in.

1968; Mathematics MSc, 1970;
Mathematics PhD, 1979. Worked at
BT from 1971 until 2007, for various
departments within the company in
numerous roles. He is currently Chief
Editor of Draft Recommendation
Q.Flowstatesig. Following a consultancy
role supporting Anagran and DARPA
on FSA standards, has recently been
appointed CTO of Razoom Inc,
developing new FSA products for ISPs.

Bibby Simon, Latin BA, 1969.
Retired to Norwich last year with
his wife after a very successful
teaching career. His wife has decided
to undertake supply teaching from
September. Has a daughter, Fiona.
Leonard Jennifer, English BA, 1969;
PGCE, 1970. Semi-retired now but
working as Dyslexia Tutor at Southampton
and Southampton Solent University.
Robley Angela, Latin BA, 1969. Married
Ian Robley (Chemistry BSc, 1970). Lives
in Durham and are both still working. Mr
Robley is Deputy Principal at Macmillan
Academy in Middlesbrough and Mrs
Robley is the Head of Sixth Form at
St Anthony’s School, Sunderland.

of 150 Telecoms Engineers on
customer contracts in the UK.

BA, 1970. Worked as a Social Worker
for nearly 20 years and currently
lectures at a college in Guernsey.

1970. Currently living in Athens with his
family. His daughter starts at University
this October. Has worked for the past
15 years as a Management Consultant,
using his Psychology and Therapy
training in the business environment
with Senior Executives and teams.

SPLD Assessor and is now semi-
retired. Now a doting Grandma.

1996 and worked as a consultant

University, 1993-98. With others,
established GR Micro Limited in 1986,
carrying out independent research and

from pharmaceutical companies.

Spriggs Michael, Geology MSc,
1970. Now semi-retired. After ten
years as an exploration geologist
he returned to the UK to join the
Investment Bank SG Wharbury. He now
has a few Non-Executive Directorships
and does some consultancy.

Industry, then in Further Education,

working in Sydney, Australia, after
moving to Australia in 1974.

Studies BA, 1971. Living in South
Manchester, retired last year and
is now enjoying her freedom and
learning Spanish. Enjoying walking
and volunteering at the Bridgwater
Concert Hall amongst other things.

take the gap year she never had.
Stevens Penelope, Combined Science
BSc, 1971. Uses Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy to work with people who
want or need to lose weight, but find it
difficult to manage their eating habits.
She has an MSc in Cognitive Behavioural
Therapy and has worked in the NHS
and private sector for over 20 years.

Appeared on “Escape to the Country”
on TV and moved into a farm in Wales.

Director of the work-based training
company set up five years ago
by herself and her husband. Has
worked in education for 37 years, as
a Teacher, Inspector, Local Authority
Advisor and Service Manager. Enjoys
spending time with family and friends,
including her two grandchildren.
Callow Felicity, Psychology BSc,
1972. Did a Certificate in Education
after completing her degree at
Leicester. After a brief period
teaching, she moved on to social/
community/youth development work
in Sheffield. She is now semi-retired.
Childs Jacqueline, Psychology BSc,
1972. Has been teaching Psychology
A-level for 20 years. She completed a
Fulbright Exchange with an American
Teacher in 2005, where they swapped
houses and jobs for a term. Ms Childs
is also a member of the European
Psychology Teachers Association.

1972. Running a start-up based on
proprietary technology for dealing with
highly contaminated oils and solvents.

1972. Now living the rural idyll in
France, after early retirement from
FCO, with husband, two dogs,
cat, hens, bees and lots of land.
Harris Stephen, Law LLB, 1972. A
Family Law Firm Partner, specialising in
Child Care Work. He recently completed
his fourth channel crossing by sail.
Hewitt Alan, Chemistry BSc,
1972. Semi-retired from a varied
teaching career. Still very active
doing a lot of mountaineering and
following the careers of his two
sons. Has lived in Sheffield ever
since leaving Leicester in 1977.
Horberry Kathryn, Mathematics
BSc, 1972. Has retired from being a
Computer Systems Developer with the
East Midlands Electricity Board after 29
years. She has been Nottinghamshire
Ladies Golf Champion eight times.
Iles Will, Combined Science BSc,
1972. Lives and works in a community
of around 30 people, where he
runs a smallholding and week-long
events for visitors from April until
September, many of which focus on
sustainability and green politics.
Matthews Joseph, Chemistry BSc,
1972. Following his graduation from
Leicester in 1975, completed some
post-doctorate work at the University
of Edmonton and the MPI Fuer
Strahlenchemie before joining Sericol Ltd
in 1980. In 1985 he moved to Germany
to work for DuPont before being
transferred to the USA in 1997. He is
married with two grown-up children.

Rees Frank, Politics BA, 1972. Has
recently retired after 36 years in Primary
Education. He spent 25 of those years
as a Head Teacher at three schools.
Tanner Peter, Philosophy BA, 1972.
Partner in two firms of solicitors. He
has been twice married and twice
divorced and has three sons. He is
a recent devotee to golf (which he
considers to be a sure sign of ageing!).

post at Wyggeston and now works
part-time as a clerk. Has begun
involving himself in more singing.

BA, 1973. Retired in 2006 and has now
resurrected his musical career playing in
a blues band in and around Norwich.
Hargrave Keith, Tropical Geography
MA, 1973. Spent 20 years as Principal of
The Canterbury High School. He retired
to become a National Challenge Adviser.
Mr Hargrave was awarded a CBE for
Services to Education in Kent in 2008.
Harrison Barbara, Combined
Arts BA, 1973. Working in a busy
Community Mental Heath Team. Her
daughter has just been accepted for
graduate Medicine, after studying
Biochemistry at Oxford. Still loves
English and is in two book clubs.
Hayes Richard, Sociology BA, 1973.
After finishing his BA, did VSO in
Egypt. After a PGCE he then spent five
years in Saudi Arabia, then 27 years
running a Language School in Spain.
He is now a VSO volunteer, currently
volunteering for two years in Ethiopia.

2005, has been the Dean of Cardiff
School of Art and Design, University
of Wales Institute, Cardiff.
Neale David, Geography BA,
1973. Married with two grown-
up children, and has lived in North
Somerset since 1981. His career is
in the Civil Service, predominantly
in IT with the Ministry of Defence.
Price Peter, Geography BA, 1973. Has
worked for Gravesham Council for 36
years. He is married with two grown-up
children. He also runs the Trade Union
at work, has been a School Governor
and is involved in local league football.
Spencer Catherine, Chemistry
BSc, 1973. Married Bill Spencer in
1981 with whom she had three
children. All three went to University.
Sadly, Bill died in December 2007.
Did a PGCE at Crewe College of
Education, after which she was a
Nursery Teacher and then a Special
Needs Teacher. She is now retired.

Costello Julia, Combined Studies
BSc, 1974. After university, completed
a Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel
Management and worked as an Industrial
Relations Advisor for many years ending
up as Civil Servant with as Senior Industrial
Relations Advisor until 2006. Currently
works for OCR Exam board as Citizenship
Assessor and also doing part-time work at
local auctioneers. Married to Teacher (Jim),
has two children. Would love to hear and
catch up with anyone who knew her then.

has a BWY Teachers Diploma.
Doughty Peter, Social Sciences BA,
1974. Very happily retired after 32 years
in teaching. He is Chairman of Old
Northamptonians Rugby Club. Considers
his best (most special) achievements to
probably be his two beautiful daughters!

several years in the Engineering industry,
joined the University of Warwick
Manufacturing Group (WMG) in 1983
and has been there ever since!

Taught for 20 years before taking early
retirement (medical). He then set up
and still runs the international children’s
charity ‘Children of Fiji’ voluntarily.

1974. Worked as a Research
and Development Geophysicist
before turning to Satellitetelecom,
owning his own company.
Morris Janet, Combined Arts BA,
1974. Still teaching – a tireless public
servant! Considers herself a local now
after marrying, having four children
and living in Leicester for 41 years.
Oakes Shan, Combined Studies
BA, 1974. Promotes sustainability
through education. Stands for
the Green Party for Westminster
and Europe and campaigns full-
time on green issues. Runs ‘Voice
International’ with husband Bill Rigby.
Parkes-Rolfe Nigel, Biological
Sciences BSc, 1974. Has been happily
re-married for 25 years. Has two
sons, one currently at the ‘other’
university, the other in a band! EHO
by profession and looking to retire,
government permitting, in three years.
Pearson Georgina, Education BEd,
1974. Went on to achieve further
academic/professional success, achieving
a BPhil (Ed) and an MA. She is the
founder, Director and Headteacher
of Lewis Charlton School, a school
for children with social, emotional
and behavioural difficulties.
Phillips June, Psychology BA, 1974.
Took her PGCE and worked as a Teacher
in Leicester. After she had her family
she set up her own business before
moving to live in Spain. She also has
TESOL and has taught English.
Rooney Kevin, Physics MSc,
1974. Took early retirement
from Hughes /Boeing after 27
years managing many successful
commercial satellite programs. He
is now fully involved in “second
career” in spacecraft and systems.
Stirland Ann, Combined Studies
BSc, 1974. Got her doctorate from
UCL in 1992 in Human Skeletal
Studies. Had previously worked as a
freelance Human Skeletal Biologist,
eventually analysing all the burials
from the Mary Rose – work which
then formed the basis for her PhD.
Strange Robert, Mathematics BSc,
1974. Started in Software Development
and Telecommunications Research
before turning to Team Marketing. Now
has the income and time to enjoy life.
Thomas Rodney, Geology BSc, 1974.
Currently running a property investment
company and helping people prepare
financially for their retirement.
Twigden Paul, Social Sciences BA,
1974. Now semi-retired having run
the plastics division of Bun2L PLC
for 15 years. Was recently captain
of Woburn Golf Club. Now travels
extensively and is having fun.
Wilson Anne, Geography BA,
1974. Now teaching full-time at Alton
Convent School. Director of Studies and
teaching English in Year 6. Has three
children. Has just completed a Masters
in Maths Education at Chichester Uni
whilst still teaching full-time. Loved
Leicester University and still in touch
with past students. Meets up every
year with Sue Reade (neé Nash),
Joan Storrow and Jenny Bergman.

Wood Martin, Geography BA, 1974.
After thirty years in Local Authority
and Housing Association Housing
Management, took early retirement in
2006. He is now very happily working
part-time in a small local Library.
1975
Acton Penelope, Economic and
Social History BA, 1975. Currently
teaching at a High School on the Isle
of Wight. Is a Professional Tutor and
works with local universities on ITT
(Initial Teacher Training) as well as
teaching English and Film Studies to
GCSE and A level. Great to see Peter
Fearon’s name and to get back in touch
with him – he was a great personal
tutor and always supportive – despite
my fecklessness. Those who remember
Marion Grierson as warden of Clare Hall
and as a friend will hold her dear still.

After 15 and a half years working
as Parish Priest in Southampton and
Chaplain at the Mayflower Theatre,
has been consecrated area Bishop of
Stafford in the Diocese of Lichfield.
Arnold Lerida, Space Physics MSc,
1975. Worked for UKAEA on Fast
Reactor Safety. She is now the Director
of a small software company. Married
with two children and lives in Dorset.

Currently working for Nottinghamshire
County Council as a 14-19
Manager in the Children and Young
People’s Services Department.
Bratt Stephen, Chemistry BSc,
1975; Chemistry PhD, 1979.
Running a Management Consultancy
in Hertfordshire, married to
Linda, twin boys aged 14.
Brown Ivor, Geology PhD, 1975.
Now semi-retired but is still active
writing books and papers; and at
the National Coal Mining museum
and Ironbridge Gorge Museum. He
is also with BESO/VSO doing mining
work on projects abroad. Holds the
Ernest Cook and Winston Churchill
fellowships. Has been involved in
mining for over 58 years, working as
an Engineer, Planner and Consultant.
Childs Robert, History BA, 1975;
PGCE, 1976. Taught for 33 years in
Leicester and was an Assistant Deputy
Headteacher. He was also an examiner
in History. He has an active role in
League Cricket. Has two daughters who
graduated from Cambridge. In 2002 was
diagnosed with rare late onset muscle
myopathy leading to early retirement!

BA, 1975. Joined Midland Bank in 1976.
Achieved ACIB. He remains with them
as HSBC, working in corporate banking.
Duff Keith, Geology PhD, 1975.
Retired in 2006 after 30 years with
English Nature. He is now doing part-
time consultancy in the golf industry.
Ettinger Colin, Law LLB, 1975.
Solicitor who represents people with
serious injuries and is highly regarded
by the Law Directories. Married
with three grown-up children.
Fry Anthony, Economics and
Economic History BA, 1975. Recently
returned from two years in New York.
He has three grown-up children and
lives between Oxfordshire and London.
Fuller Michael, Biological Sciences
BSc, 1975. Completed his PhD at the
University of Aberystwyth at BBSRC
Welsh Plant Breeding Station in 1979.
He is a visiting professor at University
of Angers and University of Southern
Queensland. He is also Honorary
Secretary of the UK Council for
Graduate Education, where Professor
Sir Robert Burgess was the ex-Chair.

BA, 1975. Moved to London where
she trained and practiced as a Social
Worker. Since 1989 she has lived
in Devon where she is a Lecturer in
Social Work at Plymouth University.

Responsible for negotiating terms
and conditions for power projects
allocated to him. Negotiated terms
and conditions for two largest power
stations in the UK and two of the
largest worldwide, in South Africa.

both graduates – one in Maths and
the other in Creative Writing.

Illingworth Patricia, History
BA, 1975. Retired in July 2009
after working for 31 years at
American Express latterly as
Premium Product Manager within
Global Marketing. Held numerous
roles in travel, supplier relations
and marketing. Since retirement
has travelled and in March 2010
formed her own company, Beehive
Associates, to provide a specialised
marketing consultancy and product
management service. Now living
with her husband Omer in Tadworth
and enjoys travelling, walking and
gardening in her spare time.

who is now 20 and at University

Leicester for Guildford Law School,
trained and practiced in Chelmsford,
Essex, prior to moving to the South
Coast, East Sussex. Now concentrates
on Child Law, regularly representing
abused or damaged children, not always
a pleasant task but it can be truly
rewarding. Indebted to Peter Seago, his
Leicester Family Law Lecturer for a solid
platform from which to base his career.

1975. Ex-Chairperson for Papworth
Hospital and the Thera Trust. She
completed her PhD at UEA in
1987. Was widowed in 2009.

Following Law College at Lancaster
Gate, moved back to Norwich in 1976
– two years as an Articled Clerk, four
years as an Assistant Solicitor and
became a Sole Practitioner from 1978
to 1982. Then joined a fellow Solicitor
to form a partnership. Left in 1992 and
purchased a local Public House which
he sold after two years and returned to
being a Sole Practitioner until August
this year. Has now retired other than for
consultancy work. Still playing the guitar,
piano and various other instruments.

Teacher with LA and a supply agency
(Teach Education). She also works
privately as a tutor for Primary and

at Scraptoft where she was able to
join in both college activities (dance
drama and drama) as well as enjoying
the local cultural scene (music and
theatre). Taught in Hoddesdon for a
year before returning to Norfolk.

a PGCE at Warwick University. Has
taught in Warwickshire ever since and
is now looking forward to retiring as

Texas. Married for 30 years now,

1976. Gained CEng MICE by passing
professional review in 1983. He has
spent the last 25 years specialising in
infrastructure design and considers his
best assignment to be the two weeks he
spent supervising local labour constructing
a small CHP Plant in Tanzania.

1976. Has had a hugely enjoyable career
in Arts Management, most recently
with the Arts Council for England.
She now works freelance, developing
contacts in and around Barcelona.
Evans Annette, Latin BA, 1976. Gave
up working in HR for the NHS two years
ago to return to studying and has just
completed the first year of BA Italian
with the University of London External
Programme (part-time study) with the
aim of eventually doing some private
teaching and possibly an MA. Also works
as a volunteer twice a week at a local
hospice. Due to living abroad a couple of
times over the years (USA and Australia),
family commitments and all round busy
life, she has almost completely lost touch
with the University and the people.

1975. Following a recent business trip to
Leicester she took a trip down memory
lane to Clare Hall and was very sad
about the demise of her home for three
years. The memories brought a very
warm glow and all the tales that could
be told! Now a Senior Manager within
Adult Social Care in Derbyshire. Looking
forward to pursuing further studies in
her retirement, mainly learning Spanish.

Ford John, Sociology of Sport MSc
(DL), 2008.
Mr Ford, a former Leicester Tigers
Physiotherapist, died in December
2010 aged 80 after a long battle with
cancer. Mr Ford, who followed in
his father’s footsteps by playing for
Nuneaton, became Physiotherapist
at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in

the 1960’s where he developed
an interest in Sports Medicine. He
retired from the NHS at the turn of
the decade after 55 years of service
– all in the Midlands and mainly in
Leicestershire. He then completed
an MSc in The Commercialisation of
Sport at University of Leicester and
an MA in the History and Culture of
Sport with De Montfort University.
Ford leaves a son, Robert, two
grandchildren, Oak and Sequoia,
and a daughter, Katharine.

Mr Goodall died in 2008.
Griffiths Patricia, Training MSc, 1994.
Mrs Griffiths died in Jan 2010.
Griggs Jamie, Psychology BSc, 2009.
Mr Griggs passed away on 31 July
2010. Jamie was diagnosed with
acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in
November 2009 and lost his battle
with pneumonia and other infections
following a transplant. During his
time at the University Jamie was a
very active student; he contributed
to the Student Ambassador Team,
participated in the Student Associates
Scheme and completed the Leicester
Award: Ambassadors Programme. He
also helped with the selection of new
Ambassadors in June 2009 and was
active in promoting the scheme at
the Students’ Union Freshers’ Fair.
Hawkes Colin, Diploma in
Social Work, 1972.
Mr Hawkes died of a heart attack in
February 2011 aged 64 whilst cycling
to work. He brought great clinical
skill and wisdom to his work with
children who had suffered sexual
abuse. Mr Hawkes studied Law
at Kent University and then did a
Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work
at Leicester. He was a superb athlete
and lifelong cyclist. Colin was married
twice and is survived by three children
and three grandchildren.
Hill June, PGCE, 1977.
Mrs Hill died on 31 August 2007,
after a courageous battle with
cancer. In addition to her teaching,
she was known by BBC Radio
Nottingham listeners as clairvoyant
and astrologer Samantha Frost.
June had a husband, (Royal Marine)
‘Gunner’ Marsden, who she married
at age 22, and the couple had two
children, Rosanna and Martin.

February 2011. She stayed on in
Leicester after graduating to do an
LLM and then initially worked at
Nottingham University where she met
her husband Brian before becoming a
Commercial Lawyer in private practice
in Birmingham.

Died on 14 April 2010 after a short
treatment for cancer. He was an
Honorary Fellow and Head of the
School of Archaeology and Ancient
History at the University of Leicester.
The whole School owes a huge debt
to Alan, who was involved in many of
their major success stories. He will be
sorely missed for his wise counsel and
good humour.

Halifax, he worked as a publishing
rep, after leaving Leicester, later
establishing a chain of successful
bookshops. He will be greatly missed.

Served a long career in Education,

College of Education. Mr Salthouse
spoke highly of his time at Leicester,
particularly of Professor Sykes, the
Head of French at the time.

Mrs Stevenson passed away on 1
March 2010. She left her beloved
husband Gordon, her parents, Tom
and Rita Hetherington, her sister,
Jill-Rhianna Green, and also many,
many friends.
Telford Nancy, Modern Literature
MA, 1981.
Mrs Telford died in October 2010,
a result of pneumonia from which
she could not recover because of
her advanced Parkinson’s disease.
She was a strong advocate of
public libraries, and ran a successful
campaign to retain many local
libraries threatened with closure.
She was also active in International
Voluntary Service, the Woodcraft
Folk, the NHS Public Involvement
program and her local church.

13 June 2010.

Wright John, Physics with
Astrophysics BSc, 1976.
Mr Wright died of cancer aged
61. He was a physicist and
engineer who had an early career
in student politics and later
campaigned for people with
Asperger’s Syndrome, with which
he was diagnosed in his mid-50s.
After briefly attending Liverpool
University, he worked in industry
before going to Leicester in 1973
to take a degree in Physics with
Astrophysics. There he became
president of Beaumont Hall, stood
unsuccessfully for Student Union
President and, in 1976, was elected
the Leicestershire Area Sabbatical
Officer of the National Union of
Students (NUS).
Members of Staff
Allen David.
Mr Allen died suddenly but peacefully
at home on 24 April 2010. He was
Sub-Librarian (Technical Services) in
the University Library from 1963 until
his retirement in 1984 and further as
an Associate until 1986. Under David’s
leadership the Library stock expanded
not only in terms of quantity but also
in quality. David has left the legacy of
a strong library collection, but he has
also left fond memories from those
staff who were privileged to have
worked with him, as witnessed by the
number that attended his funeral.
Bumford Evan.
Mr Bumford died on 11 February
2010. He was the first Secretary of the
Leicester Medical School. His lasting
memorial is the Leicester Medical
School which he helped to start and
establish with Bill Crammond, the first
Dean. Mr Bumford studied History
and French at King’s College London,
which was punctuated by his service
to the RAF. In spite of his disability
he did a full-time onerous job never
asking for any special consideration.
He could not of course have done this
without the help of his wife, Olive,
whom he married in 1945. He was a
family man and enjoyed the company
of his children and grandchildren
making light of his physical problems
and enjoying life with them to the full.
Honorary Graduates
Corah (George) Nicolas.
Died in September 2009. Mr Corah
served as Pro-Chancellor of the
University of Leicester from 2004-2008
and was awarded an Honorary Doctor
of Laws in July 2008. He was Chair
of the Fundraising Committee and
was able to raise close to £14million
for the University. In the words of the
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Robert
Burgess: “We in particular have much
to thank him for and members of this
University are indebted to him for the
energy and enthusiasm he brought
to fundraising, principally for our
recent Library project.” In 2008 Mr
Corah was presented to Her Majesty
The Queen and HRH The Duke of
Edinburgh on the occasion of the
Royal Opening of the Library to which
he had contributed so much.

Sutherland Joan, Honorary Doctor
of Music, 1968.
Dame Joan Sutherland died 10
October 2010. An internationally
renowned opera singer and an
Honorary Graduate of the University
of Leicester, she was awarded her a
Doctor of Music degree in 1968.
Associates
Lord Fyfe of Fairfield.
The Right Honourable Lord Fyfe
of Fairfield died on 1 February,
2011, aged 69. Len Fyfe gave his
professional career to the Co-
operative Wholesale Society (CWS)
and rose to fill many of its highest
executive posts. He also served as
a justice of the peace in Perthshire
from 1972-75. In 1975, he was
appointed Chairman of Shoefayre,
the East Midlands company owned
by CWS. Fyfe sat on the board of
Central Television, on the Court
of Leicester University and served
on the East Midlands Economy
Planning Council. In the 1980s, Fyfe’s
contribution to the society grew
when he was appointed to influential
board positions: he was particularly
active on the main CWS board from
1981 and served as an outstanding
chairman from 1989-2000 Fyfe’s
work with the CWS and on the
commission was acknowledged
with a life peerage in 2000. He also
supported gay rights, ID cards and
a stricter asylum system. He married
Ann Asquith in 1965 and is survived
by their daughter; his wife and a son
predeceased him.
