Downloading, Installing and Running the Software 

First off, you DON’T need to get everything up and running from the beginning!  But many people worry 
about what software they need, where to get it, and etc. from the beginning, so here it is. 

And once they download it, there’s no WAY they’re going to want to wait several seconds to learn what 
to do with it.  They want to rush in NOW NOW NOW, so if you’re not the impatient type, hang onto this 
until we start using it.  If you’ve got ants in your pants, here’s the rather exhaustive step‐by‐step: 

Download links for the software are located in lecture 2 (which you should read thoroughly). 

 
 

Install RSLogix by right‐clicking on the file and clicking “Run as Administrator” 
 

                               
 

Here is the installation flow: 
  
Click “Next” on all of these screens 

 
Select “I accept” and click “Next” 

 
  
Supply whatever “Name” and “Organization” you like and click “Next” 

 
Select “Complete” and click “Next” 

 
  
Click “Install” 

 
Wait a little bit… 

 
  
Click “Finish.”  One down, two to go! 

 
Install Emulate by right‐clicking on the file and clicking “Run as Administrator” 

                                    
 

 
Here is the installation flow: 

 
Pick someplace (like your Desktop) and click “Extract.” 

 
  
Click “Next” where there are no other options 

 
Select “I accept” and click “Next.” 

 
  
Supply whatever “Name” and “Organization” you like and click “Next” 

 
Select “Complete” and click “Next” 

 
  
Click “Install” 

 
Wait a little bit… 

 
  
Click “Finish.”  Two down, one to go! 

 
Install RSLinx by right‐clicking on the file and clicking “Run as Administrator” 

                                                              
 

 
  
Leave the default folder selected and click “Next.” 

 
Click “Next” on all of these screens 

 
  
Select “I accept” and click “Next.” 

 
Supply whatever “Name” and “Organization” you like and click “Next” 

 
  
Leave this as is and click “Next.” 

 
Click “Install.”

Wait… 

 
Wait… 

 
Select “Always trust” and click “Install.” 

 
  
Then wait a bunch more… 

 
Until finally you can click “Finish” and be DONE installing.  Now let’s configure our communications 
driver and then I’ll tell you how to set up a program and get it running… 

 
Open RSLinx.   

 
 

 
It’s a rather simple and unassuming interface, don’t you think?  Now, click on that little icon that looks 
like an extension cord – the one in the middle… 

 
  
If you clicked the right icon, you should see this. 

 
Now click into “Available Driver Types” and select the “SLC 500 Emulator” 

 
  
Once you see this, click “Add New” 

 
Leave the name as is and click “OK.” 

 
  
Leave it alone, just click “OK…” 

 
When you see this, click “Close” and then MINIMIZE RSLINX, but DO NOT close it.  Configuration is now 
done.  So let’s whip up a test program and run it on the Emulator! 
Open RSLogix 

 
 

 
Click on the New icon on the top/left that looks like a piece of paper 

 
  
Select the 1100 B processor and click “OK.” 

 
This is what you should see.  Now add one rung and the following instructions (an XIC and an OTE): 

 
  
If you don’t know how to do this yet, it’s because you’re ahead of yourself.  Consider going through the 
course and getting to the point where I teach it.  If you already kinda know your way around, let’s 
proceed.   

 
Click on “Verify Project” under “Edit.” 
  
It should say, “Verify completed no errors on the bottom. 

 
Save your program to the Desktop and CLOSE RSLOGIX completely! 

 
Open Emulate (the one on the bottom in this picture) 

 
 

 
I bet you expected something more interesting, huh?  Sorry.  ;‐) 
  
Click that first icon (Open) and navigate to the program you created before from RSLogix. 

 
Set the “Station #” to 1 and click “Ok.” 
  
When the name of your program appears on the bar, you’re good.  Now, MINIMIZE Emulate, but DO 
NOT close it. 

 
Go to your Desktop and double‐click on the program that you created (bottom here). 

 
  
Look familiar? 

 
Now go up to “Comms” and select “Who Active Go Online.” 

 
  
When you expand your EMU500, you should see a (virtual) MicroLogix PLC.  Select it and click “Ok.” 

 
Did it work?  Sweet!  Now change your mode from “REMOTE PROGRAM” to “Run.” 

 
  
And that’s it.  You are now a Jedi!
