Introduction

1.1.Background of the Study

A computer shop is a place where one can use a computer with internet access, but it

has fees, usually per hour or minute. These types of business are very popular in every country

like Philippines. In the Philippines, computer shops are found on every street in major cities and

there is at least one in most municipalities or towns. There are also computer shops or Internet

cafes in coffee shops and malls but most of it are near at school premises because we all know that

nowadays many people like students are need computer to browse or to have an easiest way to get

information they need and to make assignment and etc. But students who are below 18 years old

are prohibited from playing computer games during regular class hours. Computer shops become

popular because anyone can afford to rent with it. Internet connection then was dial up and

relatively expensive therefore only a few shops offered internet service. The bulk of service back

then was gaming and typing services for students.

Establishing computer rental business needs determination of the following

important factors such as computer hardware, computer software, people ware, and target market

and business model, computer shops in the Philippines provide communities with the ability to

access the Internet and share Internet experiences.

statistically significant, implying that higher levels of access to the Internet improve the subjective

well-being of all people notwithstanding their race or age. The results of a positive relationship

agree with studies such as Kavetsos and Koutroumpis (2011), Cotten et al. (2012), Ganju et al.

(2016) and Pierewan and Tampubolon (2014). Furthermore, these results support the 'South Africa

access to all South Africans by 2030 as it not only contributes to the development of the region

but also to the life satisfaction of the citizens.

According to Ndemo, B., & Weiss, T., the demand for online services is increasing, including

the digitization of records to improve data visibility. These are all areas that will require a young,

educated population—which is now abundant in many African countries. Internet cafes seeks to

unlock the hidden market opportunities presented by market enabling digital platforms. It reviews

various market-enabling digital platforms in Kenya brought to light through research on digital

entrepreneurship ecosystems, finding examples where Kenyan digital start-ups have achieved

success in breaking down traditional barriers and offering better value propositions to customers.

addition to customer service, and we are getting tremendously positive feedback from passengers,

According to Williams Nwagwu, E., Adekannbi, J., & Bello, O. (2009), since the

expansion of the internet in the early 1990s, it has become customary for individuals to turn to the

global information infrastructure whenever they need information and facts. The internet is an

unsurpassed repository of information of all kinds – from specific to general, from minutiae to

trivia to depth of detail, to historic and up-to-the minute. It is an unsurveilled and non-punitive

place where almost anyone can freely deposit information products for those who might need them.

It is therefore expected that the internet will contain both the good and the bad, showcasing, for

instance, the scholarly outputs of different research bodies and educational institutions around the

world, as well as bringing to the doorsteps of homes the green light streets of Bangkok.

According to Atkin, D. J., Jeffres, L. W., & Neuendorf, K. A. (1998, Fall), According

to diffusion theory, adoption of technological innovations is a function of one's innovativeness, or

willingness to try new products. Thus, if we consider Internet service as an "innovation," diffusion

theory may offer clues about those who are relatively early to adopt it.

According to Rogers with Shoemaker (1971, p. 27), define innovativeness as "the degree

to which an individual is relatively earlier in adopting an innovation than other members of his

social system." Although this is but one of many competing definitions of innovativeness (e.g.,

Midgley & Dowling, 1978)(1), scholars have yet to account fully for the psychological dynamic

driving technology adoption.

According to Copeland, L. (2002, Feb 15). A new Internet cafe can always bring

According to Symonds, J. (1999), through providing support for public regional Internet

Facilities such as Internet Cafes. The economic merits of public Internet facilities in regional and

rural areas are well promoted. This study explores these economic benefits, as well as some very

valuable social benefits not often recognised. An exploratory research design is employed and data

from in‐depth interviews with four public Internet facilities is analysed. The study draws

conclusions about the balance between economic and social issues in managing the Internet. These

findings have implications for the future development of public regional Internet facilities.

According to Fasa, R. A., & Fasae, J. K. (2013), Cybercafé is use today by people for so

many reasons, purposes, benefits derived and so on. In Nigeria, as in many African countries

cybercafés are common places in major cities and towns offering access to internet at affordable

rates ([17] Ojedokun, 2002). Such cybercafés offer opportunities for low income people to access

internet. Users with better education, greater personal capabilities and experience tend to use

internet in cybercafés for more serious purposes than others ([21] Wahid et al. , 2006). Cybercafé

users are mainly youth with majority being male. As unemployment of youths, school leavers and

graduates increase across the globe, many of the unemployed youths use computer and internet

access facilities in the cybercafés to while away time, playing computer games, surfing the web,

chatting and dating ([1] Adetoro, 2010). In Nigeria and Africa, many notable scholars such as [4]

Adomi et al. (2004), [6] Alao and Folorunsho (2008), [20] Ugah and Okafor (2008) to mention

few have worked on the use of cybercafé for Internet access by students focusing on universities,

while less emphasis had been made on polytechnics.

Local Literature

According to Arnaldo, P. (2018) What is the Future of Internet Cafes in the Philippines

Coming home from work I pondered on the future of the Internet Cafe Business. Specifically, the

Future of Internet Cafes in the Philippines. Right now, if I'm to plot the status of the business, I

would place it on an upward trend. The popularity of eSport games, headlined by DOTA and

League of Legends is helping push the business. There are new game concepts that attract new

customers. Like the Massive Battle Royale games that are currently the darling of the business.

This upward trend actually follows a perceived downward trend a few years ago. A big chuck of

previous customers now use Mobile Data to browse the internet and interact on social media. This

exodus caused many Internet Cafes that rely on casual browsing, Facebook and YouTube users to

close shop. Mobile phones became more powerful that mobile gaming has actually started to rival

PC and console gaming. Thus, more exodus of players, more bleeding for Internet Cafe owners.

According to the Trendy Tech. (2005). "Really, the new technoiogies are Web based.

The advantage is tbat it reduces the initial startup costs and allows all the infrastructure to be

outsourced, such as virus checking, updates, upgrades. You don't have to have your own staff do

that. Just about everyone has one of those web sites these days." - Bill Nichtberger, executive vice

president, Aphelion.

According to Businesstips.ph (2017) Internet Cafes 2.0 - 7 Reasons Why There Is Still A

Market Once a mainstay in every 90s' city and town, the internet cafe was used by backpackers,

foreign workers and teens alike. Whether it was to pass the time browsing the web, doing some

work or chatting to relatives, internet cafes are making a comeback after the highs of the 90s. And

it's all to do with the internet, funnily enough. Back then, web 1.0 was slowly developing and

access was limited and slow. For a small fee, internet cafes provided the equipment, connection

and coffee.

According to Gregory, A. 2018. The Pros and Cons Of Starting A Computer Repair

Businese Computer problems happen to everyone, and they often happen when people least expect

them. From setup problems to computer crashes to software issues to networking challenges, every

household and business with a computer has the potential to need computer repair and maintenance

help from someone who is knowledgeable in the field of information technology. If you have a

technical background and an expert understanding of computers, peripherals, and software, a small

business as a computer repair and maintenance service could be a great business idea for you.

Before jumping in, consider the pros and cons of starting a computer repair business.

According to Adminjay 2016. How to create Computer Shop Business or Internet Cafe (in

the Philippines) Computer shops are businesses that are massively in tune with the Filipino culture.

From business connection, networking, to dating foreigners or locals alike, to playing games such

as LOL or DOTA; computer shops and internet cafes offered their service to provide connections

that many people benefited from.

According to Nicasio F. 2015. Running a Computer Shop? Here's How to Increase Sales,

the world, businesses in the space can not afford to just sit tight. You need to continuously find

ways to stay relevant and offer value to your customers. To help you accomplish this, Vend caught

(ACRBO). In addition to his role at the ACRBO, Herman also owns Vertical Axion, a marketing

firm for IT Companies. In this post, Herman shares his thoughts on how computer and tech stores

can improve their marketing efforts to gain more customers and sales.

According to Niederkohr, T. (2008), Training in any form also applies to shop owners in

learning how to successfully run their businesses. While much technical trainijig is offered to

technicians, the Automotive Management Institute is one place where business training is offered

online. Toni Slaton, AMl's executive director, says AMI currently offers monthly Webinars

covering anything from sales and marketing to customer service, telephone skills and employee

management. "Between juggling a job, a home, a family and a social life, there isn't always a lot

of time left to attend a traditional instructor-led course," says Slaton, AAM. "Online training offers

the convenience of working from your personal computer and at your own pace. It's a viable tool

right now as evidenced by the growing number of people utilizing it, and is the way of the future."

According to Ron Kramer, a computer value-added reseller and the owner of All Computer

Solutions Inc., over the effectiveness of using standard VMware-based server solution. According

to Kramer, server virtualization is not just for the big businesses, but small businesses can also

benefit from virtualization, allowing offices of any size to access the latest enterprise-quality

technology. Kramer, reportedly, has built his business around the idea that server virtualization

can help small businesses work better, and his one-man IT-shop-for-hire is thriving. In 2001, he

started All Computer Solutions Inc. in Portland and now has more than 20 high-end boutique

small-business clients. Before virtualization technology, Kramer was putting two to four servers

in each client's office. Kramer said that what virtualization allows him to do is become hardware

independent.

According to Fitzsimmons, C. (2012). For Michael Young, managing director of training

organization RTO Transformed, running a virtual business enables one to hire the best employees

regardless of their location while Amanda Hayward, owner of fiction publisher Writers Coffee

Shop, said that one of the biggest benefits is lifestyle flexibility.

According to the Financial Times, "In India most people may not be able to afford PCs,"

says Mr Krishnan. "But the spread of cyber cafes and corner shops and kiosks with internet

connections, even at village level, means that even poor people will be able to utilise the benefits

of the net. By March 2001 you can easily expect 1.5-1.8m connections in India. In calculating

actual user numbers we multiply by four - and you get 7-8m people using internet." Despite its

potential, the impact of the internet on India has been negligible so far. "The internet has not really

affected India yet as only a miniscule proportion of the population can access it," says Mohan

Krishnan, research director of the E-technology Group of market researchers. One of the biggest

obstacles is lack of phone lines. Of India's 600,000 villages only about 370,000 are connected.

India has one of the lowest telephone connections per capita in the world at 15-20m and this can

only improve slowly as it is estimated that just 4-6m lines will be added each year. Consumers

may wait more than a year for a telephone connection unless they are prepared to pay a hefty bribe

and once connected the lines often work only intermittently.

According to Amiri, S., & Woodside, J. M. (2017). As the world has been emerging from

the economic and financial crisis over the past decade, businesses and societies are looking for

ways to generate growth and opportunities. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

remains one of the key sources that will allow for innovation and growth in the advanced and

emerging economies. This paper seeks to evaluate the impact of ICTs at a global level and allows

for a comparison of BRIC countries to the rest of the world, through measuring the availability

and adoption of ICT, along with the development of the social, cultural and economic building

blocks necessary for its effective use.

According to Brown et al. (2017), the implementation of a skills development project aimed

at increasing the technology competencies of participating librarians in Columbia University’s

Science & Engineering Libraries, in response to changing instructional needs. Adopting a DIY or

Maker learning model gave librarians a perfect opportunity to experience learning new technology

skills just as their users encounter them. The authors conclude that this collaborative project

methodology could potentially fit a large variety of different library environments, providing other

institutions with an excellent opportunity to reassess and revamp staff skills, no matter their

instructional focus. The literature notes that previous library staff training models were largely

devised for newly matriculated Library and Information Science graduates preparing to enter the

workforce. Burgeoning technology developments require libraries to explore novel methods to

expose staff to new technology skills.

Local Studies

According to Chase (2006), he has argued that service delivery systems can be improved

by separating them into high- and low-contact operations near the customer and must be able to

interact well with the public, since quality is often subjective (in the eye of the beholder). Output

is variable, so wages have to be time-based. Low-contact services can place their operations near

their suppliers, labor, or transportation, since the customer is not in the environment. The

workforce is required to have only technical skills, as work would be performed on a customer

surrogate. This also allows wages to be output-based.

According to Roger Schemenner, expanded this concept by including the degree of labor

intensity and customization with the contact (interaction) classification. Service firms with low

Senior High School Department

Emilio Aguinaldo College–Manila
20

interaction/customization utilize standard operating procedures and pay less attention to physical

surroundings. Firms with high interaction/customization strive to maintain quality, react to

customer intervention and gain employee loyalty. Low labor intensive firms concentrate on capital

decision, technological advances, maintaining a high utilization rate, and scheduling service

delivery. Highly labor-intensive services emphasize workload scheduling, managing growth,

hiring, training, and employee welfare.

In his 1986 article, “How Can Service Businesses Survive and Prosper”,Schemenner

provided a framework, which resembles Wheelwright and Hayes’s Product-Process Matrix and is

used in similar fashion, is called the Service Process Matrix. Within this matrix service firms are

classified by their position on a graph with two dimensions. The horizontal dimension is the degree

of labor intensity, which is defined as the ratio of labor cost to capital cost. The vertical dimension

of the matrix measures the degree of customer interaction and customization. Firms that have a

high degree of labor intensity and a high degree of interaction/customization are termed

professional services. Service firms with a high degree of labor intensity but a low degree of

interaction/customization characterize the service shop, while firms with both low labor intensity

and a low degree of interaction/customization constitute a service factory.

Senior High School Department

Emilio Aguinaldo College–Manila

Strategic positioning involves first defining the firm’s target market. In other words, what is

the set of customers the firm seek to serves. Next, the firm must determine its core competence or

what will distinguish it from other service firms, i.e., cost leadership, differentiation, or focus. At

this point, the firm then must make decisions regarding its mission and high-level goals and

objectives (Metters, King-Metters, Pullman and Walton, 2006)

At the service strategy level, the service firm must define its service concept, operating

system and service delivery system. The service strategy links the firm’s strategic position with

tactical execution. The firm begins by determining its competitive priorities, and its order winners

and order qualifiers. Competitive priorities are the characteristics of the firm or things that it does

better than other service firms (i.e., low cost, quality, service, or flexibility). The firm’s competitive

priority(s) must be both an order qualifier and an order winner. The order qualifier is a

characteristic that the service must possess in order to compete in the market. If the firm lacks this

then the consumer will not even consider purchasing the firm’s service. The order winner is the

characteristics that will cause the consumer to purchase the firm’s service over its competitors.

The service concept then is the set of competitive priorities that the target market values.

Senior High School Department

Emilio Aguinaldo College–Manila
22

Finally, the firm approaches tactical execution issues. Tactical execution involves the day-to-

day activities required to function and support the service strategy. Included are capacity

management, facility location, inventory management, facility layout, supplier selection,

operations scheduling, staffing, and productivity improvement (Metters et al., 2006).

Service organizations succeed by providing services that satisfy customers’ needs.

Companies that provide transportation, such as airlines, have to get customers their destinations as

quickly and safely as possible. Companies that deliver packages such as FedEx, must pick up, sort,

and deliver packages in a timely manner. Colleges must provide quality educations. Like

manufacturers, service providers must continuously look for ways to improve operational

efficiency (Baughman, 2006).

In the article “Why Internet Cafe Business in the Philippines” (2009, March), internet

cafes are also a dominant access point for user from the lower socio-economic classes. This kind

of business may earn you extra money. Not many people can afford to buy their own PCs so they

are turning to the Internet for information or to solve problems. Putting your business to capture

them will set you apart from the rest.

Senior High School Department

Emilio Aguinaldo College–Manila
23

Just like any other businesses, computer rental business also experienced problems that

affect its operations and productivity. Santiago (2007) enumerates five common problems in the

computer rental business. 1). Competition – when there are more internet cafes near the shop that

means there’s indeed a market for the products and services. However, there is also bigger the

probability that the number of people going in your shop will be drastically reduced, likewise your

profit. 2). Expenses – computers evolve into something better and faster every few months, thus

upgrading computers is often necessary to accommodate new and exciting programs. Besides,

paying regularly for the electricity, internet connection, sometimes for rent and water bill, etc is a

must. That is why it is necessary to carefully planned everything including allocation of money for

the expenses.

1.6.Theoretical / Conceptual Framework

Computer shops are very helpful to many people especially to those who do not

have their own computer set and internet connection or broadband. If we are going to take a look

inside the computer shop, we can see that it is fully occupied almost all the time.

The figure 1 which is the advantages, it displayed the factors that giving an advantages

on every computer shops. The ability to store large amounts of data on a computer is convenient

and inexpensive, and saves space. A computer's ability to allow a company to organize its files

efficiently leads to better time management and productivity. Now that technology is evolving

fast we can do things that may be hard to do during the late 90s, like doing the assignment for

searching thing on the books and any type of educational requirements, with this we learn easily

with things that ca be foreign to us.

While, the figure 2 shows some of the disadvantages of using computers, all things

have its own positive and negative effect that will hit us if we will not control our own

limitations although it gave us the convenience we need it’s still not perfect, by using computers

for a long time, your blood circulation can become poor due to less physical activities. It can

cause the disturbance in one's meal. Can cause health problems like bad postures, aches, obesity,

eye problems, etc. The rise of the computer age has had what is arguably the greatest affect in the

history of mankind on how business is done -- information can be transmitted in a split second,

calculations done almost instantaneously and massive amounts of data can be processed with

ease. For all of those pluses, though, there are some disadvantages that should be considered by

businesses owners who have been slow in embracing computers.
