Unexpected Pregnancy: A case study of woman who got pregnant while using birth

control

Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Today’s generation many women unexpectedly got pregnant while using their

birth control. Most unexpected pregnancies occur when the couple is not using birth

control or are using birth control inconsistently or incorrectly (Alleman et al., 2014). This

lack of attention has resulted in a system-wide failure to provide care to reproductive

aged women who are at risk of unexpected pregnancy (Taylor, 2013). In addition,

Kendall (2005) defined unexpected pregnancy as a mistimed or unwanted, and

classification has been widely used in survey research. The cause of this unintended

pregnancy is that without using contraception because of that so many women got

unexpectedly pregnant. Every woman chooses from a range of contraceptive methods

that differ in important ways. Inadequate decision support may lead them to select a

method that poorly fits their circumstances, leading to dissatisfaction, misuse, or nonuse

by (Wyatt et al., 2014).

In the Philippines, Ericta (2010) indicates that unplanned pregnancies are more

likely to occur among older women than younger women. One in three births (36

percent) in the Philippines is either unwanted (16 percent) or mistimed (20 percent).

According to Finer and Hussain (2013), many Filipino women experience unintended

pregnancies, because of that abortion is highly stigmatized in the country. The

population is increasing about having unintended pregnancy and faces significant

challenges in the area of reproductive health.

According to the viewpoint of Klima (2007) that unintended pregnancy is a

worldwide problem that affects women, their families, friends, and society because of

this unintended pregnancy the result of contraceptive they used is failed. Also National

Academies Press (NAP) says that unintended pregnancy has a major impact on

numerous social, economic, and cultural aspects of modern life. This study examines on

why abortion is the best way to make your life safe just because of this unintended

pregnancy. But not all unplanned pregnancies are unwanted, according to Hall et al.,

(2017) it may seem self-evident that unintended pregnancies would be associated with

adverse outcomes.

Unintended pregnancy among adolescents may be important challenge in

high-income and low-income countries. The concept of unintended pregnancy has been

essential to demographers in seeking to understand fertility, to public health

practitioners in preventing unwanted childbearing and to both groups in promoting a

woman’s ability to determine whether and when to have children (Santelli et al., (2007).

As presented by Finer (2010) that unintended pregnancy rates typically include all

women in the denominator. This understates adolescent’s rates because many

adolescents are not sexually active. Unintended pregnancy among adolescents is a

common public health problem in industrialized, middle or low income countries.

Reproductive control including pregnancy coercion and birth control sabotage may be

associated with partner violence and risk for unintended pregnancy among young adult

females utilizing family planning clinic services by (Miller et al., 2009). In this way

childhood sexual and physical abuse as a risk factor for adolescent pregnancy but the

relationship between exposure to childhood abuse and untended pregnanc.
