1.0 INTRODUCTION

“If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.” –Seth Godin

requoted by Bella Kurnia

Phobia, according to Wodele, A. and Solan, M. (2017), is an

excessive and irrational fear reaction. Having phobia may experience

a deep sense of dread or panic when encountering the source of fear.

The fear can be of a certain place, situation, or object. Unlike general

anxiety disorders, a phobia is usually connected to something specific.

The impact of a phobia can range from annoying to severely

disabling. People with phobias often realize that fear is irrational, but

unable to do anything about it. Such fears can interfere with work,

school, and personal relationships.

Bathophobia means the fear of depths. It is fear or anxiety

associated with the sea or water bodies of various types, though; many

bathophobic individuals are also known to fear tunnels, mountain

valleys or caves. The word Bathophobia originates from Greek word

“bathios” which means “deep or depth” and “phobos” meaning

PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

“aversion, dread or fear”. People living with this phobia try to avoid

lakes, swimming pools, seas, hallways, wells, mountain valleys, tunnels

or all other things that have depth associated with them. When they

do encounter these, they tend to experience apprehension or have a

full blown panic attack. They often realize that their fear is irrational

however they are unable to overcome it. In some extreme cases, their

fear may even interfere with their daily lives (Olesen, 2015).

On the other hand, there are no hard numbers of people who

suffer bathophobia, but as some indication, the Reddit group devoted

to the phobia currently has over 88,000 subscribers. Even though the

numbers might not support the fear response associated with

bathophobia, Marc Carlin says that the fear of the sea is actually very

understandable. Fear of deep water is not irrational, people may have

this fear of darkness because they do not want to see and only rely on

our vision to protect themselves. As Carlin describes it, bathophobia is

related to this very basic emotion. Given the average person’s

comparative helplessness in water, and the limitations being in a large

PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

body of water puts on our senses, that fear of the dark can easily

translate to a fear of the deep (Grundhauser, 2016).

Having bathophobia also means that a person is likely to be

scared of drowning. In the Philippines, many issues have been reported

way back 2010 and 2011, as of now, there are still some issues reported

about minors drowned because of being bathophobic. According to

Arokiasamy, J. and Krishnan, R. (1994), these accounts for nearly 10% of

deaths, making drowning the third leading cause of mortality for ages

5–14 years. Drowning has been reported as a major health problem in

Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines,

Malaysia and China.

The last report of drowning that was announced in Calamba,

Laguna was in Brgy. Parian Calamba, Laguna, which the three

children of Jofran Monge, a resident of Brgy. Parian and lived beside

the San Juan River, was drowned due to Typhoon Lannie and Typhoon

Maring. The body of the children was found in Laguna Lake located in

Brgy. Palingon Calamba City. Although the reason of their drowning

PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

was the flash flood caused by the typhoons, it is assumed that the

children are scared of drowning and they have no choice to live

beside the river. It might be a good thing to interrogate residents of

Brgy. Palingon as they also experience flash flood.

1.1 Central and Corollary Questions

The main objective of this interpretative phenomenological

inquiry is to look into people’s experiences, attitudes, and challenges

being encountered by bathophobic residents of Brgy. Palingon

Calamba City, Laguna. This study answers this central question:

What is the essence of the lived experiences of the people having

bathophobia in Brgy. Palingon Calamba City, Laguna?

1. How do the co-researchers describe their experiences regarding

the challenges they encountered in having bathophobia?

2. What themes emerge from the study?

2.0 METHODOLOGY

2.1 Research Design

The study utilized the qualitative research with phenomenology

as approach. This approach is used when a researcher is “interested in

uncovering the meaning of a phenomenon for those involved”

(Merriam, 2012). This strand of research is discovery-oriented and, the

findings are not predetermined because variables will not be

manipulated; instead, it is emergent in design. Research questions at

the onset, as well as data collection procedures or protocols may

change along the way depending on what ongoing data collection

and inductive data analysis reveal (Creswell, 2014).

2.2 Population and Sampling

In the conduct of this qualitative research, the researcher made

use of purposive random sampling. This was the most appropriate

sampling for the study since this looked at a random sample and adds

credibility to a sample when the potential sample is larger than one

can handle). While this is a type of sampling that uses small sample
PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

sizes, its goal is to increase credibility, not to encourage

representativeness or the ability to generalize (Clemente, Julaton, and

Orleans, 2016).

2.3 Co-researchers of the Study

Through purposive random sampling, the researcher selected

three residents from Brgy. Palingon Calamba City to be her co-

researchers. The table that follows provide their profile:

CO-RESEARCHER AGE GENDER

Co-researcher 1 21 Female

Co-researcher 2 42 Male

Co-researcher 3 18 Male

For the study’s three co-researchers, their ages range from 18,

the youngest to 42, the oldest. Majority of the co-researchers are males

with only one female.

2.4 Instrument of the Study

In gathering pertinent information, the researcher used a semi-

structured interview instrument for the co-researchers. The instrument

was given by her Research teacher. When approved, the researcher

personally approached the three co-researchers and explained the

endeavor of her inquiry and the purpose of the interview. She asked

for their consent. When they gave their consent, she proceeded to the

one-on-one interview phase. The interview started from February 26 to

March 5, 2018.

2.5 Data-Gathering Procedure

Before the conduct of the study, the researcher asked many

people if they have bathophobia by asking them if they are

experiencing hallucinations when it comes to deep and dark water. .

The researcher brought with her recording gadgets, notes and pen

and the guide questions before she facilitated the interview. She also

discussed and explained individually the instrument and personally

administered the instrument. After the interviews were conducted, she

PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

proceeded with transcribing of the responses word per word of the co-

researchers. Tabulation of data was likewise done by the researcher for

easy qualitative data analysis.

2.6 Treatment of Qualitative Data

After gathering all the data coming from the interviews

conducted, the researcher transcribed the interviews verbatim with her

three (3) co-researchers. Afterwards, she extracted the similar

responses of her co-researchers. After clustering their responses, she

came up with five themes that encapsulate the feelings, points of

view, and experiences of her co-researchers. Afterwards, observations

and reflections of the researcher were derived from the themes.

Supporting literature, articles and blogs from people around the world

who also had the same experiences on having bathophobia were

included to seal the experiences.

3.0 FINDINGS AND REFLECTIONS

This research is guided by the following central question:

What is the essence of the lived experiences of the people having

bathophobia in Brgy. Palingon Calamba City, Laguna?

Meanwhile, the corollary questions have been answered in the tables

provided.

Corollary Question no. 1: How do the co-researchers describe their

experiences regarding the challenges they encountered in having

bathophobia?

The following tables provide the findings gathered through the

semi structured interviews conducted with the co-researchers on five

(5) interview questions.

1. Interview question no. 1: Have you been drowned? If yes, is that

the reason why you have been scared of drowning and deep

water? If no, then what is the reason?

When co-researcher 1 answered, she looked confident in

expressing herself and answering the question because maybe she

surpassed many experiences about these challenges.

Just like Berukoff, K. and Hill, G. (2010) found out in their research

which they said that learning how to swim can provide a great sense

of accomplishment and personal satisfaction and provide

opportunities for social interaction (Irwin, Irwin, Ryan, & Drayer, 2009;

Phillips, 2008), it also poses an individual challenge and is likely to

provoke a certain degree of anxiety, self-efficacy may play an

important role in success in the pool (Starek & McCullagh, 1999).

Further, an individual’s fear of drowning or anxiety induced by previous

water activities may be directly related to her/his level of efficacy. Self-

efficacy beliefs are an important aspect of motivation in youth sport

and physical activity, due to their influence on task choice, effort,

persistence, and resilience (Bandura, 1990, 1994). Children with higher

self-efficacy are more likely to participate in physical activity than

those with lower self-efficacy (Chase, 2001).

Interview Question no. 2: What did you feel when you see and while

you are in a deep and dark water?

na ko ng mga nalulunod dahil hmm.. ako dahil taga dito sa Aplaya
halos malapit sa tabing dagat, nakakita ko nung mga tao o batang
nalulunod.”

When co-researcher 2 answered, he looked very serious and sad

about what he had seen because it is really tragic to see personally

that many people especially children die helplessly.

Together with Doocy, S. et al. (2013) in their research, Floods are

the most common natural disaster and the leading cause of natural

disaster fatalities worldwide. Risk of catastrophic losses due to flooding

PAGE

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

is significant given deforestation and the increasing proximity of large

populations to coastal areas, river basins and lakeshores. The

objectives of this review were to describe the impact of flood events

on human populations in terms of mortality, injury, and displacement

and, to the extent possible, identify risk factors associated with these

outcomes. The primary cause of flood-related mortality is drowning; in

developed countries being in a motor-vehicle and male gender are

associated with increased mortality, whereas female gender may be

linked to higher mortality in low-income countries. Conclusions.

Expanded monitoring of floods, improved mitigation measures, and

effective communication with civil authorities and vulnerable

populations has the potential to reduce loss of life in future flood

events.

When asked about how he overcome his challenges, co-

researcher 3 said that, -

“I have not overcome these challenges as of now because I’m

still scared when the water is 6ft. or higher..ah! Or deeper.”

When co-researcher 3 answered, he looked very sad because

he looks like he really wants to overcome these challenges.

Similarly, Aleksander, I. (2013) in her blog said that “I'm afraid to

go deeper. The idea, I think, was that nature would take over—that I'd

kick, battle the water, and eventually rise to the surface. Instead I lay

down on the bottom of the ocean and allowed the water to enter my

lungs. That I seemed to possess no survival instinct, as it's called—no

innate part of me that knew what to do in the face of danger—

became apparent again the next year when I encountered a snake in

the woods. As the other kids ran screaming, I just stood there frozen,

tears streaming down my face. I have no idea what personality traits

bring a child to so passively greet ominous circumstances, but these

episodes do reveal a fatalistic predisposition that has followed me into

my "adult beginner" life. As I sank to the bottom of the ocean, it simply

did not occur to me that there was anything I could do about it.”

Interview Question no. 4: Is/Are there someone who helps you in

overcoming these challenges?

When asked about if there is someone who helps him in
overcoming his challenges, co-researcher 2 said that-

“Yes, oo meron naman, yung kaibigan ko na ahh.. swimmer.”

When co-researcher 2 answered, he still looks serious and

thankful about his friend swimmer for guiding and motivating him.

Truly, Aleksander, I. (2013) in her blog which she tried swimming

lessons to overcome her feels she said that, “We have paid $275 for 12
weeks of lessons. To ease our anxiety, we ask questions. What's your
name? Do you really not know how to swim, or do you kind of know?
So, like, you can't even float, right? Two athletic-looking men and one
woman stand before us. They welcome us to "adult beginner swim,".
Today we will be separated into smaller groups based on ability. As a
quick test, Tony, an instructor wearing a full-body wet suit, stands in the
middle of the pool and asks us to swim to him one at a time in any way
we know how. Very quickly it becomes clear that some of us have lied;
some of us can in fact kind of swim and float. I am one of the liars. I
can usually doggy-paddle for about seven seconds before my nerves
take over and I sink. I walk down the steps into the pool, swim halfway
to Tony, and stop. "What happened?" he asks. "I'm afraid to go
deeper," I say. The water, which is a pale blue and reeks of chlorine, is
up to my waist.” It can say that swimmers can really help people a lot.

lives and homes of many families across the country. Floods are among

the most common water hazards that occur in the United States and

can affect small communities as well as large towns and cities. They

help fulfill the mission by teaching people to be safe in, on and around

the water through water safety courses, water-orientation classes for

infants and toddlers and comprehensive Learn-to-Swim courses for

individuals of different ages and abilities. Red Cross Learn-to-Swim

courses are structured in a logical progression for aquatic skill

development. As participants develop these skills, they become safer

and better swimmers.

Interview Question no. 5: Does your bathophobia attack when there is
flash flood in your barangay?

CO- RESPONSES
RESEARCHERS
Co-researcher 3 “I think, it does not attack when there is a flash flood
because flash flood are common thing na and I have never
met yet a flood of 6ft. deep or higher here.”
