CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Education is the backbone in the development of any nation

Saleem (2012). It plays an absolute beneficial role in
everyone’s life in which people gain knowledge and expand their
perspective over the world.

Education is the fundamental tool of everyone as they build

up their individuality as well as the firm preparation for the
introduction of their career in life. Moreover, studying is the
most precious weapon at any kind of situation, as well as the
best powerful key to attain and gain the quality of education,
wherein students enable themselves to earn enough
ability and knowledge that they can apply throughout their
chosen path in life.

However, in every country, students encounter lots of

problems during their educational career. But one of the most
common problems of students is the issue of the financial
problem. In an article of Alicia (2012), the number of financial
difficulties experienced by students has been increasing over
the past few years. For most of the student’s tuition and
college fees are very expensive, they may struggle to afford
their fees.

Further studies involve loans, money and stress Hemilton

(2015). And not every student even their family, can’t afford
the expenses needed in pursuing their study, specially the daily
income of the students such as allowance, tuition fees, and
other fees that can be done in school. And as a result of not
being financially fit in their educational life, some students
stopped their studies and some students consider an out-campus
job or an inside-campus job just to support their every needs
and expenses in their schools.

Many students are flipping burgers for tuition and spending

money Fottrell (2013). It certainly states that students chose
to do part time job in order to fund their expenses in school.
In a site of Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) by
Rapacon (2015) states that new study from Georgetown
University’s Centre on Education and the workforce finds that,
over the past 25 years, more than 70 percent of college students
have worked while attending school.

While in an article of Fottrell (2013) states that nearly

four out of five U.S students – including those in high school,
community college, online college, or traditional college or
university work while in school, a survey by Citigroup and
Seventeen magazines found with the average working student
putting in 19 hours a week during school year.

While in an article of Independent News for International

Students (2015) states that the following the UK’s rise in
tuition fees back in 2012, the number of British students
supporting their studies through part-time work has risen to 77
percent; that’s eight out of ten students who now have a job to
ease the financial burden of university life.

According to the OECD’s figures from 2012, Dutch,

Australian and Canadian students were the most likely students
from wealthy nations to work alongside their studies based on
the Independent News for International Students (2015). It
certainly states that this issue keeps on evolving throughout
the world.

This kind of issue is only frequent from the high school

students and the college students who cannot fund themselves on
their study. But as the New Curriculum of the K to 12 was
implemented in the countries of United States, Canada, South
Korea, Turkey, Egypt, Australia, India, Iran and Philippines,
the issue of the working student was increases and even get more
widened because of the nationwide changes in the Educational
system.

As the last said country named Philippines, is one of the

country that didn’t escape the alarming issue of the high
percentage of the students whose dealing with funding themselves
by taking up part-time job.

Due to the new implementations, first batch of the senior

high students was really in the state of adjustment specially
the income or funds added on their needs in studying. Even
though the government provide voucher for every students who
want to pursue their SHS term but there are still some students
who cannot afford the additional school income and funds
exerted. And as result, students who tend to pursue their
studies without enough financial support, has risked themselves
on managing their time and responsibility in School and Work.
