Introduction:

The Filipino language embodies the culture, traditions and norms of our heritage. It
also serves as our identity as an individual citizen of this country. Nevertheless, Filipino
language is a factor to determine whether or not each of us knows what history has our
country had. It is also the major tool for a better understanding of the flow of any
conversation in our country. Knowing and understanding deeply how important Filipino
subject is in our system of education helps us more country-oriented individuals. It is
significant in developing unity upon every Filipino people. As per international
recognition, our accent using Filipino language is recognized as one of the sexiest
accents in Asia and having such recognition, it is very overwhelming in our part. In fact,
there is a growing number that our language has been studied by foreigners who came
to visit our country. It would be a shame in our part if at any instance a foreigner
knows more about our history more than that we already know. It is really essential that
we should inculcate to our young generation nowadays how important Filipino subject is
in shaping our future in terms of unity through Filipino language and how critical it plays
as a key function in developing patriotism in ourselves.

Counter Arguments:

Filipino subject will be studied for the first twelve years of any student in their
schooling based on our present curriculum, which includes Junior and Senior high school
students. It would be redundant if it would still be studied in tertiary level and it would
seem to be an unpractical way of teaching our students the same and repetitive context
of the said subject.

Your Argument:

The said case of removing Filipino subject in college has been opened up way back in
early 2000’s and it resulted to an unsuccessful proposal since a temporary restraining
order was made as a response to the said proposal. However, here comes the said
proposal again. It would be unnecessary to remove the Filipino subject in college since it
would just create perhaps unemployment to some teachers who only have specialization
in teaching in this subject. Why would we remove this subject wherein it has not put a
negative impact on our present system of education. If we remove the said subject,
then what would be the replacement then? As per proposal, foreign language will be
integrated such Korea’s Hangul and China’s Mandarin. It would be naïve if this would
happen then. For me, it would be a better implementation to make this foreign an
integration to our existing education system as an elective subject and letting Filipino
stay as what is usually does in the curriculum.

Conclusion:

I strongly disagree of the said proposal of removing Filipino subject in college level
since it would just create a disadvantageous outcome especially to our teachers who
teach the said subject. Integrating foreign language in college is helpful because it
would prepare our future professionals in the era of globalization rather making it as a
replacement. Moreover, adding technical and vocational elective subjects in college
would be a lot better to be given emphasis rather than the issue of removing the current
Filipino subject. In this manner, students will be much more prepared in having in their
future careers.
