The Machine, a surveillance supercomputer designed to save lives by predicting terrorist

threats and violent crimes and passing that intelligence to those who could use it. 10 It
eventually became fully sapient, passing the Turing Test with flying colors despite the best
efforts of its creator, who feared that if given autonomy, the Machine might reject its
original purpose or work against humanity. 10 When the Machine finally does become
autonomous, it continues to predict threats and help stop them. 10

 There is nothing truly intelligent about artificial intelligence software, any more than any
other kind of software, so it is perversely named .1 Electronic machines are better than
human beings at any number of tasks. 1 Toasters can warm bread via heat coils better than
humans can by blowing on it. 1 

The Sentient Machine offers a lively overview of current innovations in artificial

intelligence, but disappoints when he actually gets to the topic of sentience. 13 We have
two different types of artificial intelligence, Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) and
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI or machine sentience).13 ANI devices can learn
on their own but do not have sentience.13

Life and sentience are easier phenomenon as they use the existing time, space and
matter to be created. 4 The computer wills some day be able to create artificial sentience
and intelligence.  4 Since all is number we can make great progress in developing artificial
sentience.  4 

However, over the years, more and more of these unique capabilities have been simulated
by computer systems, to such an extent that people now propose consciousness is
next.  18 In scientific circles, consciousness is by many regarded as a phenomenon that
exists on a continuous scale, where it is the complexity of the information processing that
gives rise to different types of consciousness.  18 In that sense, ants and cats also exhibit a
form of consciousness, although it manifests itself differently.  18 

Chalmers argued that a machine, one more advanced than we have today, could become
conscious, but Koch disagreed, based on the current state of neuroscience and artificial
intelligence technology.  7Neuroscience literatures consider consciousness a narrative
constructed by our brains that incorporates our senses, how we perceive the world, and
our actions.  7 But even within that definition, neuroscientists struggle to define why we
are conscious and how best to define it in terms of neural activity.  7

Consider the bottlenose dolphin, a creature that shares a similarly large and complex

brain with humans, which is capable of understanding numerical continuity and perhaps
even discriminate between numbers.  9 Dr. John Lilly, a man of many interests, including
the bases of human consciousness, found a great deal of inspiration in dolphins as well,
devising many experiments to ascertain if dolphins could communicate with humans and
vice versa.  9 Aside from cetaceans, elephants and great apes have long been subjects of
study into their apparently high levels of sentience.  9 

Artificial intelligence (AI) is predicted to become sentient anywhere from never to

sometime in the next decade or two.  2 Jane Good all, Steven Wise and the legal team at the
Nehru are petitioning the court to broaden the legal definition of persons to include two
great apes, Tommy and Kiki (case discussed here).  2 In its current form, the law recognizes
legal persons as legal entities like corporations and natural humans (Homo
sapiens).  2 Malachi is more explicitly an AI as an attempt to create an original human
intelligence and personality.  10 In addition to the things you would expect to see such as
sabotaging the power grid, Atlas also included a werewolf apocalypse and an attack by
Godzilla.  10

When a child is born, it experiences only sensations that result in pleasure or

pain.  9 Nurture most definitely affects the formulation of emotion in a human
being.  9 Several companies are working to help machines actually understand humans on
a more intimate level, basically giving them a level of emotional intelligence.  9
