5 Learning Style Summary:

I am an applied learner. I would rather see real life situations and objects rather
than made up ones. When teachers bring up real life situations it interests me
because I can then relate and apply to it. Real life situations help me understand
all different concepts. For an English language learner, a teacher can use this by
incorporating real life experiences to the difficult concept in the lesson. For
example, if the class is learning about adding, you can line up your students and
ask more to stand up to show the addition of more students. This way the
students see the concept in a real-life situation.

I am also a visual learner. I like to see pictures and objects in front of me rather
than hearing about it. Pictures and objects will give an English language learner an
advantage. Even if it is not in their language, they will be able to see a picture and
know what it is in their native language. For example, if the teacher is saying the
word “beach,” but the student does not understand, she can show a picture of a
beach. This will help the student understand by seeing it visually.

As well with being an applied and visual learner I am also a pragmatic learner. I
am practical, logical and systematic. I am not very innovative. I need directions
and direct instruction when completing a task. For an English language learner,
direct instruction is key. The directions for English language learners should be
written and not orally spoken. Written directions allow the student to go back and
re-read it as many times as they want/need.
Next, I am a social learner. I love working with other people. I like to hear ideas
from others. Hearing ideas from others also help me design my own ideas. For an
English language learner, this is critical. It is good for these students to hear the
other students speak and watch them interact. Putting the English language
learner in a group will make them feel more welcomed and more comfortable.

Lastly, I am a verbal learner. I have trouble positioning things in space. I prefer

verbal and language skills. As a teacher, it is important to know what students are
verbal learners. They will do better talking out loud rather than reading in their
head. For an English language learner, if they are struggling but are a verbal
learner, they can use the written language and the spoken word to help them
succeed. You as the teacher, may allow these students to go into a separate room
while reading so they can read aloud.
