Last year I got my master`s

degree with the highest grades at the Faculty of Philosophy. My major was Serbian language and
literature. I`ve always loved learning languages, so I suppose it`s natural I became philologist. I
work as a high school teacher. I teach Serbian language and literature.

Today I'm going to talk about the evolution of advertising.

First I will talk about the very beginning of advertising in the ancient times;

Second , we will take a look at the Middle Ages and the rising of printing press;

Next we will see some examples of ads in the Modern Age;

Finally, I will explain how companies advertise online in the 21st century.

„The purpose of any business is to create customers“! Peter Drucker

What would the definition of ‘Advertising' be?

Definition: Advertising is a means of communication between an organization and its target

audience using space or time purchased in the media (TV, radio, magazines, newspapers,
websites, billboards, etc.)
The evolution of advertising

The very beginning

Investigators said that the first steps of advertising were in Ancient Empires, for
example, in Egypt they used papyrus promoting sales of slaves and rewards.
Greeks used street callers who announced ships´ arrival.

Middle Age and the rising of printing press

Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in 1450. made mass production of posters, circulars
etc.

The first print ad was published in 1472. when William Caxton printed ads for a book and tacked
them to church doors in England:
Fast forward to 1704, the first newspaper ad was published in the U.S.:

Then, in 1835, the first U.S. billboards displayed circus posters:

Advertisements were used during WWI as a medium to forward their propaganda by the
governments of various countries; you might have seen the famous poster of Uncle Sam saying
“I Want You For U.S. Army”.
Travelling to Modern Age

The “Golden Age of Advertising”

Advertising became a whole movement when it came to radio and television in the early 1900s.
(telegraph, typewriter, rich prints in newspapers and posters, radio, television)

Famous faces, like the Marlboro Man from the 1960s to 1990s, were also often used to sell
products:

Many popular brands which exist even today like Coca Cola, Marlboro, Old Spice etc. have been
known for their iconic advertisements.

Coca Cola especially has left an unprecedented trail of iconic advertisement

Online advertising

The evolution of display advertising began with the very first banner ad from AT&T in 1994;

Yahoo also created the first keyword-based ad in 1995;

The first mobile ad showed up in 2000 when a Finnish news provider sent free news headlines
via SMS;
The marketing strategy became especially popular when social media advertising began in
2008, starting with Facebook ads. Advertisers are able to create extremely targeted and
personalized ads.

We covered everything from the very beginning of advertising and the rising of printing press,
all the way to the modern ages and the 21st century online advertising.

In conclusion we can say that advertising is not just a tool, but a form of art.
