Introduction
On the other hand, depression primarily occur when things around you doesn’t fit
your personal skills, matter in life and your own perspective. When everyone girdles you
with negative ideas. But mostly it is created in your own mind, overthinking chiefly and
underrating your self-confidence. But according to American Psychiatric Association,
Depression is a major depressive disorder and a common and serious medical illness
that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it
is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in
activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and
can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. Symptoms can be seen
to a person who undergoes in this state of affairs, although not all people who shows
that actions are already depressed. Mostly there are some people who are naturally like
that but they’re not depressed probably that’s their kind of living since then.
A symptoms of depressed person must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis of
depression. Sadness is different from depression, the emotion is more extreme than a
simple sadness, when you are sad you just feel unhappy for some period but when
time passed by you’ll overcome it already, meanwhile depression feels such as loss of
energy and fatigue, the feeling of worthless and guilty and more worse the thoughts of
death or suicide. Likewise, according to American Psychiatric Association, depression
affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people
(16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life. Depression can strike at
any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. Women are
more likely than men to experience depression. Some studies show that one-third of
women will experience a major depressive episode in their lifetime.
Teenagers mostly are high factors of this dilemma whereas reaching of adulthood
stage are still developing. Other components may also affect like social situation,
traumatic life event, medical conditions and family problems. Circumstances and school
works can also add to their mental and emotional situation that may lead them to
anxiety and depression. “Do you not see how necessary a world of pains and troubles is
to school an intelligence and make it a soul?” ― John Keats (Letters of John Keats)
School works figure up to some teenagers and added peer pressure to them, lack
of intelligence and insecurities that may lead to anxiety to many students especially
teenagers.
Counselling needs a relationship between the counselor and the patient, both of
them need to put trust to each other to be able to share their own thoughts and also the
counselor to give advice to his/her patient. The counselor can’t help a patient when
he/she to herself/himself if he doesn’t want to listen to the counselor’s advice and if
he/she won’t speak up his/her feelings to the counselor. Also there are some
characteristics that a counsellor must have such as patient, observant, knowledgeable,
confidentiality, having empathy with a patient and a good listener. Moreover, there are
factors you need to consider as a counselor you must be insights and aware of issues,
unconditional acceptance, exploration of problems, and etc.
Counselling must be in a right place and a good place wherein the client and the patient
can talk properly. IF they have positive expectation and faith in the counselling process
and counselor, then their chances of success will increase. Likewise if they have
willingly sought out the counselor and are truly seeking resolution then this will help
also.
Overcoming depression is not just through counselling but other medication too such
as anti-depressant medicine etc, but counselling is still effective for some people who
seek for it and must prefer counselling instead of medication. But in other aspects,
counselling is still important to every people not just to those depressed but also to
those normal.
