PART B – Micro-Project Report

Title of Micro-Project
SI ENGINE COMBUSTION CHEMBERS

1.0 Rationale
 This project provides knowledge about various types of SI Eng. Combustion chamber, all
designs structure
 This project will also help the during inspection, working, operation and maintenance of
the combustion chambers used in an SI engine
 This project is therefore a core topic for automobile engineers and they should develop
desired knowledge and skills over it.

2.0 Aim/Benefits of micro project.

this micro project we have to learn about S.I engines combustion chamber types.

How to work and advantages of the all types designed combustion chambers

3.0 Course Outcomes Addressed

a) Identify factors responsible for abnormal combustion

b) Study all types of combustion chamber
c) Check the conditions of the combustion chambers

4.0 Literature Review

All types of combustion chambers used in spark ignition engine
1.We use a handbook of advance automobile engines
2.we use a handbook of a course in SI engines.

5.0 Actual Methodology Followed

 After selecting the group members, we gathered together and decided the topic “types of
combustion chambers” used in SI engines”.
 After we decided the topic we brought the combustion chamber for observation.
 After the designs was brought we typed the PART-A and it was examined by respected
faculty.
 We kept the working of the combustion chambers and differentiated data on following points
a) Construction
b) Working
c) Advantages
d) Size
e) Disadvantages

 After collecting data, we typed it in M.S. Word, and at last PART-B was made by us
 Contribution of every group member was equal in this project.

1). INTRODUCTION TO TYPES OF SI ENG COMBUSTION CHCHAMBER

The combustion chamber is a vital component of a cylindrical engine. It inside the cylinder bore.
The chamber acts as a fixed end of the combustion process. In order to introduce the
Reduces heat loss during combustion and increases the thermal
efficiency.
Different types combustion chambers have been developed over
a period of time Some of them are shown in fig.

T-Head Type
L-Head Type
I-Head Type or Overhead Valve
F-Head Type

T-Head Type:

The T-head combustion chambers were

used in the early stage of engine
development.

Since the distance across the combustion

chamber is very long, knocking tendency is
high in this type of engines.
This configuration provides two valves on
either side of the cylinder, requiring two
camshafts. From the manufacturing point of
view, providing two camshafts is a
disadvantages
L-Head Type:

A modification of the T-head type of

combustion chamber is the L-head type which
provides the two valves on the same side of the
cylinder and the valves are operated by a single
camshaft.
The main objectives of the Ricardo's turbulent
head design, Fig (c), axle to obtain fast flame
speed and reduced knock
I Head Type or Overhead Valve:

In which both the valves are located on the cylinder

head.
The overhead valve engine is superior to a side
valve or an L-head engine at high compression
ratios.
Some of the important characteristics of this type of
valve arrangement are:
less surface to volume ratio and therefore less heat
loss
less flame travel length and hence greater freedom
from knock
higher volumetric efficiency from larger valves or
valve lifts
F-Head Type:

The F-head type of valve arrangement is a compromise

between L-head and I-head types. Combustion chambers in which one valve is in the
cylinder head and the other in the cylinder block are
known as F-head combustion chambers
Modern F-head engines have exhaust valve in the
head and inlet valve in the cylinder block.
The main disadvantage of this type is that the inlet
valve and the exhaust valve are separately actuated by
two cams mounted on to camshafts driven by the
crankshaft through gears.

8.0 Learning out of this Micro-Project

 Compare different types of Combustion chambers used for SI engines.
 Material compositions used for combustion chamber.
 Construction of combustion chamber and its geometry.
 Identify the nomenclature of combustion chamber.

9.0 Application of Micro-Project.

 The most common use of combustion chamber is in SI engine, without combustion
chamber the engine is useless, that’s why combustion have a very important role in
automobile industry.
 Combustion chambers are also used in SI engines to born air&fuel mixture at
Spark ignited.
