CHAPTER I

THE STORY AND ITS SETTING

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Parental expectations are usually outlined as parents’ beliefs and

judgments regarding their children’s future achievements as mirrored in course

grades, how far their children will go in school, expected highest level of

education, and then forth (DiBartolo & Rendón, 2012; Neuenschwander, Vida,

Garrett, & Eccles, 2007). Many previous studies have shown that parental

expectations are completely related to children’s high academic performance

(Danişman, 2017; Yamamoto & Holloway, 2010; Zhan, 2006) and parental

expectations might have a major long impact on children’s academic

achievement from childhood until the period of adolescence (Froiland, Peterson,

& Davison, 2013).However, comparatively few studies centered on the influence

of high parental expectations beyond the realm of adolescents’ academic

performance to analyze problems such as their depressive symptoms (Supple &

Cavanaugh, 2013). When high parental expectations can not be fulfilled, parents

might respond critically to their children’s failures, that successively might induce

stress and depression in adolescents (Ang & Huan, 2006; DiBartolo & Rendón,

2012). Studies have demonstrated that high parental expectations are related to

high parental criticism (DiBartolo & Rendón, 2012; Madjar, Voltsis, & Weinstock,

2015), which can lead to adolescents’ negative emotions, like depression.

On the other hand, academic attainment among Asian parents is high,

that the focus is not on degree completion but on parents’ desire for the best

grades possible and pursuit of certain career paths (Naumann, Guillaume &

Funder, 2012). Yet these very high expectations might do more harm than good,

and this could be very true for Asian children who worry about falling short of

parental expectations (Costigan, Hua, & Su, 2010). However, the pressure in

itself is neither positive nor negative. It is positive if it encourages positive

perspective, healthy values, respect and diligence. It is negative if it encourages

negative perspective. The positive pressure strengthens the potential of an

individual and therefore the negative pressure reduces the person’s strength.

The positive pressure leads towards the success whereas the negative leads to

the failure in educational life (Ahktar, Azis, 2011).

The researchers have been thinking of doing this research aiming to know

the level of pressure experienced by the consistent honor students towards their

parents’ expectations. The researchers came up with the identified problem due

to the problem observed in the community whereas most of the students are

experiencing parental pressure. Also, the researchers would like to discover the

level of pressure they are in.

This study will be conducted for us to know the level of pressure

experienced by the consistent honor students from their parents’ expectations.

To be specific, the researchers would like to discover if there is a significant

relationship between the student’s profile and personal pressures.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to determine the level of pressure among the consistent

honor students towards their parent’s expectations. Specifically it seeks to

answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Sexual Orientation;

1.2 Strand;

1.3 Age and

1.4 Grade Level?

2. What is the level of pressure among the consistent honor students in

terms of:

2.1 Stress;

2.2 Expectations and

2.3 Doubts?

3. Is there a significant difference in the level of pressure among the

consistent honor students when analyzed according to their profile?

HYPOTHESIS

ALTERNATIVE AND NULL HYPOTHESIS

Ho: There is no significant difference in the level of pressure among the

consistent honor students toward their parent’s expectations.

Ha: There is a significant difference in the level of pressure among the

consistent honor students towards their parent’s expectations.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

Developing awareness on the level of pressure among the consistent honor

students towards their parent’s expectation. This study is anchored that student’s

level of awareness towards their academic performance and their parent’s

expectation. From the present literature, it was found that students get more

pressured in their academic performance because of their parent’s expectations.

Profile: Personal Pressure:

 Sexual  Stress
Orientation  Expectation
 Strand  Doubts
 Age
 Grade Level

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be beneficial to the following persons:

Students. The study will provide knowledge about how can the level of their

pressure caused by their parents expectation can affect their

academic performance.

Parents. The study will be beneficial also for the parents to help them lessen

too much of their expectation to their child in terms of their academic

performance.

Teachers. The study will be beneficial to the teachers for them to be able to

comfort a student that is experiencing the following personal

pressure.

School Administrators. This study will be beneficial to the school

administrators for them to be able to help the employees of the school

specifically the teachers to guide their students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The focus of this research is to determine the stress, expectations and

doubts of Junior High school and Senior High school students in Notre Dame of

Kidapawan College- IBED. This study will be conducted in the academic year

2019-2020.
