The demands of daily server management

Most IT administrators spend too much time managing their servers and troubleshooting
errors—and too little time on the strategic initiatives that help businesses grow. Server
deployment and configuration rely on time-consuming processes that employ physical
media, while monitoring, updates, problem resolution, and even routine management tasks
require onsite staff to work in close proximity to their server environments. With today’s
24x7 demands, businesses with limited IT resources need tools to help them diagnose
problems and resolve errors quickly and servers that simplify administration, enable
remote management, and support their goals at every stage of the IT lifecycle. This white
paper provides an in-depth look at the key capabilities of HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO)
embedded in every ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 server, the solution’s scalable licensing
offerings, and mobile-app features that support IT staff—anywhere, anytime.

Reimagine the server—think compute

The HPE iLO Management processor comes standard across all HPE ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers, and is designed with built-in
administration features that address the need for simplified server management—right out of the box. Powered by the microprocessor, iLO
Management supports four key capabilities, in addition to scalable licensing offerings and a mobile application. These allow organizations of all
sizes to automate their most common server administration tasks—from initial deployment to ongoing monitoring, diagnostics, service alerting,
and problem resolution. Businesses can reduce the amount of time spent on administration, while enjoying a greater amount of freedom to
manage their server environment any time of day, from any location that’s convenient.

Out-of-the-box tools for efficient maintenance

The time and investment required to stay on top of the errors and events associated with server installation and updates can be challenging for
many businesses to manage, especially those with limited IT resources. HPE iLO 4 is designed to help businesses set up, deploy, and configure
servers more quickly. With preloaded Negated AND (NAND) Flash memory in the iLO Management Processor, HPE Intelligent Provisioning (IP)
makes this process simple—its range of embedded features allow for quick and efficient server maintenance, without having to rely on
physical media.

The system seamlessly integrates with all standard IT processes, and includes all of the step-by-step guidance, tools, and drivers needed for
deployment and maintenance from the moment an IT administrator hits the F10 key during server boot time. Since these processes live on a
Flash chip separate from the iLO subsystem, businesses can feel confident that updating iLO firmware will not adversely affect HPE IP—they
only need their operating system (OS) to complete server setup.

Built-in intelligence enables independent management

Businesses formerly had to manage their servers using OS-based management agents or providers, such as Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) or Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM). 1 HPE Agentless Management simplifies this process for businesses, allowing
them to independently monitor server hardware and alerts. And since these capabilities are built right into the system, they instantly connect as
soon as a server is plugged into the network.

The HPE iLO 4 subsystem includes a number of features to help automate the monitoring process: health firmware that checks temperature
sensors, power supplies, fans, memory, CPU, and storage; the independent SNMP stack, which eliminates the need for host processing, increases
security, and improves stability, and sends SNMP traps directly to a management application so they don’t affect system performance.

HPE iLO’s optional Agentless Management Service assists IT staff in further resolving their information gap, using a lightweight service
embedded in their OS that feeds data directly to the iLO management processor without additional setup.

Admin essentials deliver a simplified experience

Tracking changes in server hardware and system configuration are crucial to performing diagnostics that can help IT administrators anticipate
system errors and crashes. But constant monitoring is time-consuming, and takes away from valuable hours that could be spent performing
business-critical tasks to help an organization grow.

HPE Active Health System (AHS) continuously tracks and automatically records changes, and provides a rich set of consolidated diagnostic tools
and scanners for 24x7 system health monitoring—more than 1,800 system parameters at a time. These built-in capabilities provide businesses
with essential information to speed up analysis and diagnosis, while added support from HPE specialists and HPE Authorized Service Partners
helps deliver more rapid problem resolution without impacting server performance. IT administrators can also easily export and upload data
collected by HPE AHS to HPE Service and Support, so they spend less time reproducing or describing errors, and can more accurately
troubleshoot problems when they occur.

Embedded technology provides remote support

Physically monitoring server environments is an exhaustive process. Organizations already strapped for time and IT resources need greater
flexibility in the way they maintain their servers, so that staff and service partners aren’t required to perform their duties onsite.

HPE offers embedded remote support that’s directly accessible from iLO (as well as OA and IP), without installing OS agents on the device—
greatly reducing the time it takes to activate remote monitoring. With HPE remote support tools—like HPE Insight Remote Support (Insight RS)
software and HPE Insight Online direct connect capabilities—businesses benefit from 24x7 remote monitoring, auto-generated service events
and support cases, and a personalized cloud-based IT dashboard.

With HPE Insight Online, businesses can view device health status and configurations, and securely monitor HPE contracts and warranties for
proactive problem resolution, while the HPE Support Center Mobile App’s Insight Online dashboard helps them stay up to date—from anywhere,
at anytime. With this kind of comprehensive support, businesses can achieve 66 percent faster problem resolution and a near 100 percent
first-time fix rate. HPE Insight Online and related remote support tools are available at no additional cost, and are included as part of an
HPE warranty or support agreement.

Server-management tools for anywhere, anytime access

As an increasing amount of businesses operate across multiple locations, their staff members need to be able to work remotely. This is especially
true for IT administrators, who often juggle a variety of server environments deployed in different offices. The HPE iLO Mobile App allows them
to access, deploy, and manage HPE ProLiant G7, Gen8, and Gen9 servers from a remote console using a smartphone or tablet—virtually
wherever, whenever—and at no additional cost. 2

The app interacts directly with the iLO processor, providing administrators complete control of their server environment. IT can access
plugged-in servers in a healthy state or powered-off servers with a blank hard drive. The Mobile App allows IT to remotely launch iLO scripts and
monitor their progress, access the iLO Web interface, interact with the server’s OS, and store a list of servers to manage—at no additional cost.

When you pair the Mobile App with HPE iLO Advanced licensing, you’ll benefit from additional features—like a fully integrated graphical remote
console, virtual keyboard, and mouse, plus video recording and playback—to streamline server management no matter where you are.

Multiple licensing options targeted to your business

Businesses can choose from a variety of licensing levels that provide the iLO functionalities they need. These options—including iLO Advanced,
iLO Advanced for BladeSystem, iLO Essentials, and iLO Scale-Out licensing—allow organizations to grow or maintain their systems with
confidence, while maximizing efficiency and savings.
