Blended Family

Fathers/Daughters

Mothers/Daughters

Fathers/Sons

Mother problems

Financial Problems

Black owned business: see character listing

Police brutality: Mav automatically assumed the cop was wrong (p 59), Carlos assumes the cop was
afraid b/c Khalil was a drug dealer (p 52) the honesty when she tells them Khalil was selling drugs but
wanted Mav to help him get out was so pivotal. We look to the elders for their honesty and resolve.

Media coverage: the headline on the news the Friday before Khalil’s funeral was Khalil Harris, a
suspected Drug Dealer

Interracial Dating: Starr doesn’t want her dad to view her negatively based on how he talks about other
interracial couples (p.42) “I mean, anytime he finds out a black person is with a white person, suddenly
something’s wrong with them. I don’t want him to view me that way. P 42 Starr lies to Chris about
knowing Khalil, then she lies to Chris about being the witness

Cognizant dissonance: code switching, being too black or not black enough. P. 36 Starr feel like they
didn’t arrest the officer after her initial interview because she left out details: he got out the car with his
hands up, the officer pointed the gun at her, she felt like she didn’t say something right and then
everything went wrong. P. 140

Uncle Carlos (detective) vs white police: Starr asked him if he would’ve killed Khalil and his answer is
honest: I don’t know and I can’t say unless you’re in that situation. But when Starr reveals the cop
pointed the gun at her Uncle Carlos pauses in a conflicted way (120). I think this made him snap out of
cop mode and in to protective mode.

Love letters in the simplest form: Mavs tattoos of his children and him asking if Starr wanted to talk
about the shooting more and him saying: A’ight. Whenever you wanna? (p. 37)

Elders in the black community: When Ms. Rosalie is holding Starr’s hand (p 63) after the incident she
says: It’s like my hand is telling a story and she’s responding. Sometime no words have to be spoken for
the power of discernment to take place.

Gated Communities: In Riverton Hills; Starr ponders if they are trying to keep people out or keep people
in (p69)

Gangs:

“But even if I’d grown up in it, I wouldn’t understand fighting over streets nobody owns” p17

King puts a gray bandana on Khalil’s body in the casket representing he was a King Lord which further
propels the story of THUG. Starr is trying to rationalize it by noting he had green in his car which is what
Garden Disciples do and he didn’t run to help when the fight broke out at Big D’s party.

Mav asked 2 Cedar Grove King Lords to guard their house. A different set of Kings. P 322

King Lords

Garden Disciples

Settings:

Garden Heights

Williamson Prep: an hour away from Garden Heights

Riverton Hills: An hour away, where Uncle Carlos lives

Rose Park: Starr and Seven go play bball the last Saturday of every month here. With all the riots Starr is
hesitant but goes. A Garden Disciples try to rob Seven and DaVante (King Lord) comes to save them.

Prom: Shapter 17 Starr tells Chris everyhting

Religion:

Black Jesus-Black nationalism?, a picture hangs in the clinic Lisa works at

Christlims: Christian and Muslims (pg. 31)

Contemporary Christians: Starr’s mom

Mav takes down the old picture of MLK and replaces it with Huey Newton (p. 39)

10 Point Program: posted in their Living Room; Black Panther reference.

Mav leads the family in prayer every morning

They attend a diverse church in Riverton Hills that is about an hour long. Versus black church Christ
Temple where Lisa left because folks there act like their shit don’t stank.

Nana left Christ Temple over a fight with Mother Wilson over Deacon Rankin.

Praise break at the funeral leaves Starr wondering why they’re celebrating and praising Jesus since he let
Khalil get shot: moments like this always make people question their religious beliefs and Jesus gets
blamed for everything.

TV shows, Music, Books:

Fresh Prince of Bel Air: Starr is Will, can’t wear her uniform inside out but she is different by matching
her sneakers to her backpacks. Show

Harry Potter: Natasha, Khalil and Starr the Hood Trio: tighter than the inside of Voldemort’s nose. Daddy
claims Hogwarts are really like gangs: Harry, Ron and Hermione never snitch on each other. Death Eaters
have matching tattoos. There scared to say Voldemort’s name. p. 167

Jonas Brothers

Drake

Kendrick Lamar

Marvin Gaye

Beyoncé: I’ll Beyoncé him not as powerful as a nineties R&B Breakup song but stronger that Taylor Swift
lol ( p79)

Tupac: The book is named after THUG LIFE; then Mav sings keep your head up to Starr and says Pac was
deep and rapped about “uplifting black people” NIGGAS: Never Ignorant Getting Goals Accomplished

King and Mav:

King is the leader of the King Lords now. He was named after the gang. Names are important because
they define you. King calls himself Starr’s godfather, maybe he is based on how close King and Mav used
to be.

Mav took the fall for King because King had 2 strikes and that’s why he went to jail for three years and
how he got out the gang.

Maverick:

Him and his son’s march together after the funeral

He is publicly shamed in front of his kids by the police just because they could. This causes major issues
with black men. The sad thing is one of the cops was black and kept referring to him as boy and then
called Seven a boy.

Lisa and Maverick:

High school sweethearts. Married young. Lisa wants to leave Gard Heights and Mav wants to stay
because he doesn’t want to look like a sellout. Lisa learns about Chris but does not tell Mav: Your
boyfriend your business to tell your dad. Lisa was a wild Catholic school girl when her and Mav met.

Uncle Carlos:

A man of his word. If he promises he’s going to follow through p.56) Starr trusts her uncle. He also was
her father figure when her dad was locked up. Never like Mav b/c he felt Lisa was negatively influenced
by him. Moved Lisa and her kids in with him and block Mavs calls: wanted Lisa to divorce Mav but she
wouldn’t.

Uncle Carlos keeps impossible promises Daddy keeps it real-describe Starr relationship with both of her
father figures. p 59

Lisa and Nana:

Lisa’s mom wouldn’t help her much with Starr or Sekani when Mav was locked up for 3 years. She told
her she’s not my baby so she’s not my problem. Ms. Rosalie stood in the gap as a mother helping Lisa
while she finished college to become a registered nurse.
Shanteria Shares: An Analysis of The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

Lisa was determined to prove her mom wrong about her so when she got pregnant she did everything
right: stopped smoking, drinking and went to all her appointments.

Garden Heights vs Williamson:

Williamson Starr doesn’t give anyone a reason to call her ghetto (71)

Williamson Starr, Hailey, Maya:

Starr and Maya let Hailey have her way and tend to follow her. Jonas Bros YT video.

When Starr denies knowing Khalil (113) she is doing so because they see him as a thug and she does not
want to be associated with the stereotype.

Hailey vs Starr:

Hailey stopped following Starr on Tumblr after she posted a picture of Emmitt Tills mutilated body.

Starr wanted to be Joe Jonas but Hailey thought she should have him and Starr tolerates it

Hailey texted Maya all through Spring Break disregarding the difference in time zones since Maya was in
Taipei but didn’t text Starr at all.

Rode the waves of grief together in 5th grade: Hailey lost her mother to cancer and Starr lost Natasha to
a drive by. Maybe it was grief that brought them together and made them blind to the other aspects of
their lives that were different. (p. 78)

Hailey got mad at Starr during a bball game with the boys at school and told her to pretend the ball was
some fried chicken. Starr called her out on it and she was upset that Starr was insinuating she was a
racist.

Starr vs Lisa:

Lisa allows Starr to figure out her own relationships and doesn’t pry much. She knew Khalil loved Starr
but didn’t push her to be with him or blame her for not being with him. She also corrected Starr when
she was harshly criticizing Brenda for coming to the clinic and crying about Khalil’s death. Lisa tells Starr
to shut up after telling her that was not his friend but his mother who carried and birthed him into this
world and fix Brenda a plate and then she apologized. I love this about her character, she is firm but
gentle. Supportive but also influential. Loving but always protective.

She takes Starr to the first meeting with the police. She would not allow Starr to face them alone. Uncle
Carlos is there as well.

Iesha:

Shae helps Seven get Davante out of the house and tells him to take his sisters with him. Seven doesn’t
realize she said that b/c King is going to beat her when she notices DeVante is gone and probably
would’ve taken it out on the girls too if they were there.
