CHEMISTRY- Subject Specific Task

RQ-: How the effect of concentration on the

rate of reaction between sodium thiosulphate
and HCl.

Hypothesis- rate of reaction will increase as the in

increase reaction concentration of sodium thiosulphate

Background Information -:To check the Rate of Reaction and

how concentration of reaction we require Sodium thiosulphate
and dilute Hydrochloric acid as they both are clear and
colorless liquid. As they will react together to form the Sodium
chloride according to the equation- Na2S2O3 + 2Hcl - NaCl
+H2O + SO2
+S. When the sulfur is produced the reaction turns cloudy so
the faster the reaction faster it will turn in into cloudy.

Variables-
Dependent Variable-
Time taken for reaction to complete- if concentration is less
then more time will take to finish the reaction

Independent Variable-
Concentration of sodium sulphate-
Volume sodium sulphate in moldm-3

Requirements -
Hydrochloric acid solution, HCl, 1M, 10 ml
Sodium thiosulphate solution, Na2S2O3, 0.1 M, 150 ml
Beakers of 100 ml
Distilled water
Graduated cylinders 50 ml
Graduated cylinders 10 ml
Filter paper
Permanent marker
Stirring rods
Stopwatch or timer
Procedure-:

. Using a measuring cylinder, add 50 cm3 of dilute sodium

thiosulphate solution to a conical flask.

. Place the conical flask on a piece of paper with a black

cross drawn on it.

. Using a different measuring cylinder, add 10 cm3 of dilute

hydrochloric acid to the conical flask. Immediately swirl the
flask to mix its contents and start a stop clock.

. Measure and record the temperature of the reaction

mixture.

. Look down through the reaction mixture. When the cross

is no longer visible, record the time on the stop clock.

. Measure and record the temperature of the reaction

mixture, and clean the apparatus as directed by the teacher.

Safety precaution- Hydrochloric acid solution is corrosive to

eyes and skin. It is moderately toxic by ingestion and
inhalation. The reaction of sodium thiosulphate and
hydrochloric acid generates sulfur dioxide gas, which is a skin
and eye irritant. So to prevent all these things we should wear
proper temperature resistant gloves and wear chemical splash
goggles and lab coats to secure your skin from other chemical
which might have bad affects on our skin.
Conclusion- As the concentration of sodium thiosulphate
decreases the rate of reaction also decrease because less
concentration means less molecule in the liquid so less collision
will occur and if less collision occurs then the time taken to
complete the reaction also increases .
