First things first make sure you have a nice selection of tools beside you in order to carry out this
modification.
This is only a rough guide and should not be taken as gospel. All the wiring should be done with the battery
disconnected and should be checked for any faults before introducing power to the circuit.
Only carry out this modification if you are confident with vehicle electrics and trim removal. Remember
these trims will break so take care.
Tip: WIRING AND TERMINALS CAN BE SOURCED FROM HALFORDS IF YOU USE THE VW TERMINAL THEN YOU
WILL HAVE TO OBTAIN IT FROM A DEALER THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF WIRING IT UP BUT THIS LOOKS
BETTER

Guide
2. Now remove the door handle trim, again be very gentle but firm, pull the trim away from the door at
the bottom, it will pop off and come away from the top of handle, remember be firm but gentle.
Once it has come off unclip the multi plugs from the electric window switch’s taking note of which colour
multi plug goes in which switch for later reference.
At either end of the silver handle are the main two screws that hold the panel in place remove them both.
5. Now with the door ready you need to remove the glove box.
Where the glove box comes to rest there are two black rubber dampers these are the only bits stopping the
glove box from coming out. Push them towards each other with some force and the glove box will drop
forward, now the bottom pivoted part of the lid is on clips so be firm and gentle, give it a pull and it will
pop off in your hands. Put the glove box lid to one side.
7. Remove the multiplug and undo the 10mm bolt while supporting the mirror unit once the bolt is out push
the two clips towards each other and the mirror unit will come off in your hands.
Fit the new mirror unit in reverse. The 10mm bolts are self tapping and will cut their own thread so make
sure the bolt goes in square and don’t over tighten it. It can be an idea to use some washing up liquid to
lubricate the bolt as it cuts the thread, also it can be easier to fit the bolt, cutting the new thread, with
the mirror off the car first, then when you fit the mirror to the car the thread is already there, just be sure
not to over tighten the bolt. Remove the painted trim on the old mirror unit by lifting it at the bottom of
8. Run the loom down the door behind the check strap you may wish to use some kind of adhesive clips to
hold the loom in place to stop it getting trapped in the door hinge.
Make a small hole in the top part of the door wiring loom and feed your wiring loom through.
10. On the square black multi plug there is a spare pin allocation, on that side of the plug is a flap open up
the flap by lifting the tiny clips with a pick. Stick the VW wire into that slot when it’s clipped in push the
flap down. Now cut off the excess loom you’ve made and join the VW wire to the blue wire as shown
below.
12. Chase it right up behind the heater box and out the other side up to the fuse box.
Repeat the same procedure for the passenger’s door with regards to removing the door trim and mirror unit
but this time you only need a red wire and a black wire.
14. Remember to take the trim off and pull the grommet out, for some reason it’s easier this side to push a
fully insulated loom all the way up so again tape up a good metre or two. Copy the driver’s side with
regards to fitting the loom in place and connecting the loom up.
15. With both looms in place and the trims all refitted your ready to power up the circuit
Remove the fuse box by undoing the two 10mm bolts and sliding it up when it has dropped forward remove
the trim cover at the back of the fuse box.
Use a second VW wire and terminal and locate any one of the empty fuse slots that already has a live side
to it. (I used F7 for Auto Gearbox) There’s no auto in my ST.
17. Refit the cover on the back of the fuse box and refit the fuse box.
Put the two reds together in one terminal and connect to pin 3
The two blacks together in one terminal and connect to pin 1
The single blue into a terminal and connect to pin 2
And make up a third short black wire with a hoop terminal on one end and a female spade on the other and
connect to pin 5
19. Undo the 8mm bolt on the left hand side and connect the loose black hoop to this earth point.
20. Once this is all connected, tidy up your loom and secure it in place using cable ties.
Stick a 10amp fuse in fuse box and push the folding mirror switch down and you should get this below.
