Assessment
This course is assessed by applied case (described in a different document on Moodle) based
around international strategic management and business strategy. This assessment is about
strategy formulation by assessing different external factors and their impact on the business. We
have selected PESTLE analysis which is strategic business tool. Details of this assessment
components are given below. The weighting of this assessment is 25% of the course. You are
reminded that it is your responsibility to read and understand the University regulations
regarding assessment. Your attention is directed to the regulations regarding plagiarism.

Due: TBA – APPLIED CASE ANALYSIS

Requirement: You are required to construct a report based on an applied case related
international strategic management issue. This report is an applied piece of work which requires
considerable analysis, evaluation and synthesis in a concise manner. It is strongly founded in
reality and whilst it utilises theories and concepts it must be practical with the aim of providing
the reader with direction. You will need to approach the assignment from a strategic
management perspective, and undertake and incorporate extensive research in to your report.

 Applied Business Case

Length: Approximately 6-8 pages (approximately 2,500 words), plus bibliography and
appendices.

Purpose: The purpose of this assessment is to enable you to apply knowledge and skills learnt
through the course to a real situation. Application of concepts and theories enables you to
demonstrate sound knowledge of the course material and provides you with the skills and
confidence to be able to transition your knowledge in to professional situations.

Assessment Description

When formulating a business strategy there are several strategic business tools that can help
organizations in this step. One of these vital tools is PESTLE. In this assessment, you should
utilise PESTLE and apply it on a growing company in New Zealand that is expanding
internationally or in the process of expanding such as Xero and Orion. For instance, Orion is
one of the leading organization for providing recent technology in software development in
healthcare industry. Further, Xero is one of the leading software companies in Accounting and
Finance software solution. Xero has expanded rapidly in the last few years and have reached the
North American Market competing with leaders in domain specific software solution
organizations. You are required to apply PESTLE’s factors to measure their impacts on Xero or
Orion or any chosen company from New Zealand. A deep analysis when conducting PESTLE is
required for each factor and its effect on selected company performance. You are also welcome
to recommend and criticize during the analysis of PESTLE. The outcome will be a paper
consisting of at most 8 pages. The weight of this applied paper case is 30%.

International Strategic Management context, the chosen business enterprise resources

Report/Applied Paper Content

 Title page along with the student details, course details and the instructor information
 Table of content along with the page numbers

o Introduction section
o General contents about the topic and its importance (Discussion)
o Conclusion
o Recommendations

 The body of the paper and the word count per section I’ll leave that for each student to
decide. In the body each factor must be mapped to the chosen business.

Submission

What to submit:
 The report / applied paper case (2,500 words, -/+ 10%) (30%)

The assessment must be submitted via Moodle in its own hand-in date (see above). Further you
must bring a hard copy to the class. You must follow these guidelines on how to submit your
work.
1. All documents must be written in MSWORD and not hand written
2. All documents should include a header with the following information: Your name,
your student number and coursework title.
3. All documents should include a page footer showing the page number
4. Where possible, documents should be written in Times New Roman 12 point, with 1 1/2
line spacing.
5. The document must be submitted as a zipped file or DOC file with the file name
StudentName-Title.zip

Moodle records the date and time of each submission. This date and time will be used to
determine whether work has been submitted after the deadline. Such work will be marked, but
the mark for this submission capped at a bare pass (equivalent to 50%).
