THREADED SOCKET SYSTEM
A long established lifting system, threaded sockets are used in the lifting and turning of precast units.
Individual sockets have a safe working load of up to 12.5T. There are a wide variety of sockets
for different applications. All calculations are based on 2.5:1 concrete safety factors based on a strength
of 15N/mm2. All sockets are supplied with a 3:1 safety factor and are supplied with a certificate
of conformity.
A detailed test certificate is available on request.

These sockets are available in both high grade zinc plated and 316 grade stainless steel. They are used to
lift and transport most kinds of precast units. They range from 500kg up to 12.5T. Additional reinforcement
must be added through the hole in order to transfer the forces into the concrete.

HOW IT WORKS
The Socket is attached to the formwork by means of either a plastic nailing plate or a magnetic nailing
plate. This allows it to remain in position during the pour and after the concrete has reach the required
strength, the nailing plate is removed revealing the exposed socket. When moving the unit the lifting loop
or swivel eye is screwed into the exposed socket hole allowing for a safe lift. It must be remembered that
the angle of lift will reduce the safe working load.

COMPONENTS

THE LIFTING SOCKETS

D

There are a wide range of sockets available to suit different precast unit
d

types, based on depth of the unit, reinforcement need and

thickness of the unit. Each type of socket is available in varying sizes
allowing for different loads
e

THE LIFTING LOOP

The Lifting Loops and Swivel Eyes come in varying sizes and can only be used with
the corresponding socket size. All lifting devices come complete with a metal tag
an individual identification number and certificate of conformity.

THE NAILING PLATE

The reusable nailing plate comes in varying sizes which correspond to the lifting loop and Socket. Each
load group is a different colour for ease of identification. We also supply a large nailing plate for use with
Swivel eyes.

STARCON
Concrete Handling System
THREADED SOCKET SYSTEM 1-3
During the precast process there are two occasions when the sockets are put under the most stress, the
first one is at demoulding and the second is when the units are transported to site. We need to ensure
that the sockets are capable of withstanding the forces when they are at there highest point.

The selection of the lifting sockets is determined by the following criteria.

1. Weight of the unit.

In general a concrete strength 25N/mm³ is used to calculate the weight of the concrete unit, for
our calculation it is determined as W.

2. Number of anchors being used.

This depends very much on the lifting method and the spread of the load among the anchor points.
As can be seen in the following diagram, if the sockets are not positioned properly only two
sockets will bear the load. The sockets should be placed symmetrically to the centre of gravity to
ensure all the sockets are ultilised. This combined with the correct sling arrangement will ensure
even load on the sockets. The centre of gravity is always below the crane hook.

3. Adhesion to the mould.

There are adhesion forces which are present depending on the formwork used.
The following is a guide to the values attached to the various formwork types.

FORMWORK TYPE ADHESION FACTOR AF

OILED STEEL FORMWORK 1 KN/m2

VARNISHED TIMBER FORMWORK 2 KN/m2

ROUGH TIMBER FORMWORK 3 KN/m2

STARCON
Concrete Handling System
1-4 THREADED SOCKET SYSTEM

Adhesion to the mould will be minimised by removing as much of the formwork as possible before lifting.

In certain instances the type of product being produced can also affect demoulding forces.
These are summarised as follows:

INCREASED FORMWORK ADHESION

DOUBLE T SLABS 2 xW

RIPPED SLABS 3 xW

COFFERED UNITS 4 xW

The value of adhesion to the mould is calculated by multiplying the area of concrete in contact with the
formwork (A), and the adhesion factor (af).

4. Spread or splay angle factors ANGLE AT ∂ af

If the sling used forms a triangle then the angle created at ∂ causes increased forces as it increases.

5. Sling type
If a four legged sling is being used. It must be assumed that two anchors alone are bearing the weight.

As can be seen in fig 3 not all anchors always carry equal weight. The situation can be rectified by adapting
the sling as shown in fig 4 or using a spreader system as shown in figure 5.

6. Dynamic loads

When the precast units are moved there are dynamic factors at work and these affect the load
on the anchors.

Crown Foot Sockets are suitable for lifting lightweight flat units. The advantage is that for concrete strengths
of 15N/mm2 and above no additional reinforcement is needed other than the specified mesh or cage.

All our loops come with metal identification tags, each one is individually marked.

All loops are reusable but must be changed under the following circumstances
1. If the thread is damaged or bent.
2. If the steel wire is damaged or frayed.
3. If there are any signs of corrosion.

The above safe working loads are based on an axial lift. The loads decrease as the angle of lift increases.

Please ensure

* That the socket and the loop are compatible.

* That the loop is completely free from defects
* That the loop is clearly marked with a unique identification number.
* That the loop is accompanied by a valid test certificate.
* Always insure the thread is well greased and free from any foreign matter. The loop must
be fully threaded into the socket. There is an allowance of one thread turn in order to align
the loop to the lifting hook.

SWIVEL EYES

d1
sw

Used with the threaded socket system, swivel eyes are more versatile than lifting loops in that they are
used for pitching and turning precast units as well as transporting as normal. They are usually used in high
movement areas where loops would prove uneconomical due to high levels of wear and tear.

Each Swivel eye is marked with a unique serial number which corresponds with the accompanying test
certificate, it will also state the safe working load. The eyes are compatable with both Rd and metric threads.

Our swivel eyes are manufactured in Germany under most modern techniques out of high alloyed steel.

Characteristics:

- compact and easy construction

- low space needed
- fast installation
- no aligning, the pick up link can be turned in the right position

PIN ANCHOR
LIFTING SYSTEM
PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM
The most popular heavy duty lifting system, pin anchors are used in the lifting and turning of precast units.
Individual pin anchors have a safe working load of between 1.3T and 32T. There’s a wide varierty of pin
anchors which are suitable for different applications.
A detailed test certificate is available on request.

STARCON
Concrete Handling System
PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM 2-1
THE PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM
This system comprises heavy duty lifting anchors, which are used in conjunction with a recess former and
a ring clutch to facilitate the lifting and movement of precast units The forces are spread through the tail
of the anchor and there is a second hole for extra reinforcement if needed.

HOW IT WORKS
The Anchor is attached to the formwork by means of the recess former. This allows it to remain in place
during the pour and after the concrete has reached the required concrete strength, the recess former is
removed exposing the head of the pin anchor. When moving the unit the lifting shackle grips us the exposed
head of the anchor. The shackle uses a simple locking mechanism which allows the load to be lifted in almost
any direction. It must be remembered that the angle of the lift can reduce the load capacity.

2-2 PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM

COMPONENTS
1. The Starcon Lifting Pin Anchor
The Starcon Anchor is a cast-in metal component. It has a specially designed foot which provides an
excellent anchorage in hardened concrete. The head of the anchor is shaped like a mushroom amd this
engages with a lifting shackle during lifting.
The Anchors are clearly marked with size, for instance 2.5 S and can be supplied in different lengths.
The Anchors are tested at a sampling rate until failure, and examined for possible deviations in the
dimensions. The Safety factor is 3:1 for shaft failure and 2.5:1 for pull out from the concrete.

2. The Starcon Recess Former

The former is a hemispherical component used to cast the anchor into the concrete. The head of the
anchor is inserted into the former which is then bolted to the formwork. After the unit has been cast and
cured the former can be removed, revealing the anchor head set in a hemispherical concrete recess. Each
former should provide many casts if it is cleaned and oiled before each use.

3. The Lifting Shackle

The Starcon lifting shackle is a specifically designed component that has a ball shaped claw that hooks under
the head of the anchor. Lifting eyes are supplied tested to twice the safe working load and all the test results
are entered into a log book. Each Lifting Shackle is marked with an article number, identification number
and capacity.

STARCON
Concrete Handling System
PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM 2-3
During the precast process there are two occasions when the anchors are put under the most stress, the
first one is at demoulding and the second is when the units are transported to site. We need to ensure
that the anchors are capable of withstanding the forces when they are at there highest point.

The selection of the spread anchors is determined by the following criteria.

1. Weight of the unit.

In general a concrete strength 25N/mm³ is used to calculate the weight of the concrete unit, for
our calculation it is determined as W.

2. Number of anchors being used.

This depends very much on the lifting method and the spread of the load among the anchor points.
As can be seen in the following diagram, if the anchors are not positioned properly only two
anchors will bear the load. The anchors should be placed symmetrically to the centre of gravity to
ensure all the anchors are ultilised. This combined with the correct sling arrangement will ensure
even load on the anchors. The centre of gravity is always below the crane hook.

3. Adhesion to the mould.

There are adhesion forces which are present depending on the formwork used.
The following is a guide to the values attached to the various formwork types.

FORMWORK TYPE ADHESION FACTOR AF

OILED STEEL FORMWORK 1 KN/m2

VARNISHED TIMBER FORMWORK 2 KN/m2

ROUGH TIMBER FORMWORK 3 KN/m2

Adhesion to the mould will be minimised by removing as much of the formwork as possible before lifting.

In certain instances the type of product being produced can also affect demoulding forces.
These are summarised as follows:

INCREASED FORMWORK ADHESION

DOUBLE T SLABS 2 xW

RIPPED SLABS 3 xW

COFFERED UNITS 4 xW

The value of adhesion to the mould is calculated by multiplying the area of concrete in contact with the
formwork (A), and the adhesion factor (af).

STARCON SANDWICH ANCHORS
STARCON curved lifting anchor differs from the standard only by its crancked shape. This special shape
permits installation of this anchor in, for example, sandwich panels. After installation within the load bearing
layer, the anchor head is positioned in the centroidal axis of the sandwich panel, the foot in the middle of
the loadbearing layer to ensure proper load transfer.

The special design of the clutch ensures a tight and safe connection to the anchor. Obviously, the shackle
fits the hemispherical recess created by starcon recess former perfectly. The Starcon lifting clutch, recess
former and anchor only correspond when they are from the same load group. The load group is indicated
on the lifting clutch.

LIFTING SHACKLES AND COMBINATION LIFTING SHACKLES

INSTUCTIONS FOR USE

1. Materials

Our galvanized lifting shackles are manufactured from resistant forged steel. The worked in claws help to
lift the anchor head. The coupling section for hook and shackle suits for all areas of application because of
the flexible design.

2. Application

The lifting shackle is used as lifting device with the pin anchor system. Coupling on/off can easily be done
with one hand. This lifting device can be applied for axial, diagonal and lateral loadings. It must be
remembered that the shackles work with the corresponding rubber formers and pins.

2.1 Application

The lifting shackle is used as a lifting device within the pin anchor system. In order to connect the clutch
to the anchor, the sphere is pushed with its opening facing downwards over the anchor. The latch of the
sphere is then turned downwards (Fg. 2).

Fig. 2

Fig. 3

Fig. 1

2.2 Lifting and turning

The lifting shackle is constructed in a way that unintended uncoupling is impossible. On lifting, attention
must be paid that the lip faces into the direction of tension as in Fig. 2

On turning of units, special attention must be paid on the Lip position of the lifting shackle.
It must always face into the direct tension (Fig. 3).

STARCONConcrete Handling System

PIN ANCHOR SYSTEM 2-27
3. Releasing the shackle
To release the shackle it must be unloaded by turning back the lip as in picture 4.

Fig. 4

4. Maintenance
Although, under normal conditions, there won’t be any wear and tear, the lifting shackles should be checked
once a year by a qualified engineer. Damages and the wear and the tear level have to be ascertained. If their
is obvious damage, the concerned lifting shackle must not be used again.

The lifting shackle counts as a lifting device and is therefore subject of an annual inspection (BGR 500 Section
2.8). The particular accident prevention regulations must be taken into account in order to extend the life
of the shackle.

5. Replacement State and Inspection Service

Lifting shackles should be routinely examined for damage prior to each lift and inspected by a qualified
engineer every 6 months. The lifting shackle should be immediately discarded if any cracks appear in the
sphere or coupling link. Changes and modifications including welding are strictly prohibited. In the case of
the rope model, the rope must be replaced if any thread becomes frayed corroded or bent.

6. Marking
All our lifting shackles are marked as follows:

1 - The Manufacturers name.

2 - The international CE Mark.
3 - The Load group.

Acids, alkaline fluids and other aggressive media, that can cause corrosion, must be kept away from the
lifting shackle. Changes and repairs, especially welding at the lifting schackles are inadmissible.

SPREAD ANCHOR SYSTEM 3-1
THE SPREAD ANCHOR SYSTEM
This system comprises heavy duty lifting anchors, which are used in conjunction with a recess former and
a ring clutch to facilitate the lifting and movement of precast units The forces are spread through the tail
of the anchor and there is a second hole for extra reinforcement if needed.

HOW IT WORKS
The Anchor is attached to the formwork by means of the recess former. This allows it to remain in place
during the pour and after the concrete has reached the required concrete strength, the recess former is
removed exposing the head of the cast in anchor. When moving the unit the ring clutch is attached using
the exposed hole at the head of the anchor. The clutch uses a simply locking mechanism which allows the
load to be lifted in almost any direction. It must be remembered that the angle of the lift can reduce the
load capacity.

SPREAD ANCHOR SYSTEM 3-3
The ring clutch is attached to the cast in anchor by way of the anchor’s exposed hole created by the recess
former and locked into place by hand. Full lifting instructions are detailed on page 3-28.

RECESS FORMERS

Made from a flexible material our recess formers are designed to form the perfect recess for access of the
ring clutch. Its unique design ensures that only the correct load clutch can be used in the recess.

CAST IN LOOPS

One of the most popular, economic and simple methods for lifting precast concrete is the one use only
cast-in lifting loop. These loops don’t require special lifting shackles other than a crane hook.

The loop consists of a galvanised steel wire rope with the ends swaged together with an aluminum ferrule
to form a closed loop. Every loop is marked with its safe lifting capacity as well as the Manufacturer’s mark.

Our range varies between 800kg to 99T however the most popular are those up to 25 Ton.

Loops are cast into precast unit and provide a quick and effective method for transporting and installing
concrete units. The exposed portion of the loop is cut off after installation and the remainder is sealed to
prevent staining.

Loops where possible, it is preferable for the loop to be aligned so pitching is in the direction of the arrow
(see below). Generally, loops greater than 4 tonne capacity should not be used for pitching, due to the
stiffness of the loop.

It is imperative to carefully check cast in loops for any defects including corrosion
or broken strands. If a loop is identified as damaged it should be disposed of
immediately.

POLYPROPYLENE LOOPS

One of the most popular, economic and simple methods for lifting precast concrete is the one use only
cast-in lifting loop. These loops don’t require special lifting shackles other than a crane hook.

Produced from Polypropylene rope with the ends swaged together with an aluminum ferrule to form a
closed loop. Every loop is marked with its safe lifting capacity as well as the Manufacturer’s mark. The loops
range from 150kg to 1200kg for axial and angled lifts up to 15Nmm2 and pitching for 20N/mm2 and over.
Pitching and angled lifts reduce the working load by 50%.

ANGLED LIFTING LOOPS

Angled lifting loops are used in the edge lifting of concrete slabs and panels. A H20 x 300 rebar must be
positioned at the loop angle in the attachment clip. Made from galvanised steel wire and needs no special
lifting shackle other than a crane hook.

It is imperative to carefully check cast in loops for any defects including corrosion
or broken strands. If a loop is identified as damaged it should be disposed of
immediately.
