THREADED SOCKET SYSTEM
A long established lifting system, threaded sockets are used in the lifting and turning of precast units.
Individual sockets have a safe working load of up to 12.5T. There are a wide variety of sockets
for different applications. All calculations are based on 2.5:1 concrete safety factors based on a strength
of 15N/mm2. All sockets are supplied with a 3:1 safety factor and are supplied with a certificate
of conformity.
A detailed test certificate is available on request.

THREADED LIFTING SOCKET SYSTEM
These sockets are available in both high grade zinc plated and 316 grade stainless steel. They are used to
lift and transport most kinds of precast units. They range from 500kg up to 12.5T. Additional reinforcement
must be added through the hole in order to transfer the forces into the concrete.
HOW IT WORKS
The Socket is attached to the formwork by means of either a plastic nailing plate or a magnetic nailing
plate. This allows it to remain in position during the pour and after the concrete has reach the required
strength, the nailing plate is removed revealing the exposed socket. When moving the unit the lifting loop
or swivel eye is screwed into the exposed socket hole allowing for a safe lift. It must be remembered that
the angle of lift will reduce the safe working load.

Used with the threaded socket system, swivel eyes are more versatile than lifting loops in that they are
used for pitching and turning precast units as well as transporting as normal. They are usually used in high
movement areas where loops would prove uneconomical due to high levels of wear and tear.
Each Swivel eye is marked with a unique serial number which corresponds with the accompanying test
certificate, it will also state the safe working load. The eyes are compatable with both Rd and metric threads.
Our swivel eyes are manufactured in Germany under most modern techniques out of high alloyed steel.

COMPONENTS
1. The Starcon Lifting Pin Anchor
The Starcon Anchor is a cast-in metal component. It has a specially designed foot which provides an
excellent anchorage in hardened concrete. The head of the anchor is shaped like a mushroom amd this
engages with a lifting shackle during lifting.
The Anchors are clearly marked with size, for instance 2.5 S and can be supplied in different lengths.
The Anchors are tested at a sampling rate until failure, and examined for possible deviations in the
dimensions. The Safety factor is 3:1 for shaft failure and 2.5:1 for pull out from the concrete.

LIFTING SHACKLES
The Starcon Lifting clutches are made of high quality steel and they are designed with a safety factor of 5.
Every Starcon Lifting Clutch is individually tested and is supplied with a unique certificate and identity

The special design of the clutch ensures a tight and safe connection to the anchor. Obviously, the shackle
fits the hemispherical recess created by starcon recess former perfectly. The Starcon lifting clutch, recess
former and anchor only correspond when they are from the same load group. The load group is indicated

Our galvanized lifting shackles are manufactured from resistant forged steel. The worked in claws help to
lift the anchor head. The coupling section for hook and shackle suits for all areas of application because of
the flexible design.
2. Application
The lifting shackle is used as lifting device with the pin anchor system. Coupling on/off can easily be done
with one hand. This lifting device can be applied for axial, diagonal and lateral loadings. It must be
remembered that the shackles work with the corresponding rubber formers and pins.
2.1 Application
The lifting shackle is used as a lifting device within the pin anchor system. In order to connect the clutch
to the anchor, the sphere is pushed with its opening facing downwards over the anchor. The latch of the
sphere is then turned downwards (Fg. 2).
Fig. 2
Fig. 3
Fig. 1
The lifting shackle is constructed in a way that unintended uncoupling is impossible. On lifting, attention
must be paid that the lip faces into the direction of tension as in Fig. 2
On turning of units, special attention must be paid on the Lip position of the lifting shackle.
It must always face into the direct tension (Fig. 3).
Fig. 4
4. Maintenance
Although, under normal conditions, there won’t be any wear and tear, the lifting shackles should be checked
once a year by a qualified engineer. Damages and the wear and the tear level have to be ascertained. If their
is obvious damage, the concerned lifting shackle must not be used again.
The lifting shackle counts as a lifting device and is therefore subject of an annual inspection (BGR 500 Section
2.8). The particular accident prevention regulations must be taken into account in order to extend the life
of the shackle.
6. Marking
All our lifting shackles are marked as follows:
Acids, alkaline fluids and other aggressive media, that can cause corrosion, must be kept away from the
lifting shackle. Changes and repairs, especially welding at the lifting schackles are inadmissible.

RECESS FORMERS

As can be seen in fig 3 not all anchors always carry equal weight. The situation can be rectified by adapting
the sling as shown in fig 4 or using a spreader system as shown in figure 5.

When the precast units are moved there are dynamic factors at work and these affect the load on
the anchors.

1. Marking
The BGW anchors are made of special-quality flat steel. The shape of the anchor foot is described under the corresponding anchor types.
The anchor head is provided with a hole, into which is fitted the locking bolt of the ring clutch. Each anchor carries a clearly visible, stamped
load stage to and CE-marking. There is also a marking on the ring clutch with up (A) and close (Z).

3. Maintenance
Although, under normal conditions, there won’t be any wear and tear, the ring clutches should
be checked once a year by a well informed. Damages and the wear and tear level have to be
ascertained. The use of cable (e.g. ring clutch 1,25 to) just allowable with original cable.
If the limits, shown in the table have been exceeded, the concerned ring clutch must be used
again, as well at notches in the steel/cable/bar.
Acids, alkaline fluids and other aggressive media, that can cause corrosion, must be kept away from the wire cables.
Changes and repairs, especially welding at the lifting shackle are inadmissible.
At the rope-model, the rope has to be replaced at wire breakdown, damages to the thread, contusions, corrosions scars or sharp bends. Considering table 1.

CAST IN LOOPS
CAST IN LOOPS
Popular means of lifting light concrete units. The loops are designed to be used only once and there is no
need for any other lifting part.
PRODUCT PAGE
CAST IN LOOPS
One of the most popular, economic and simple methods for lifting precast concrete is the one use only
cast-in lifting loop. These loops don’t require special lifting shackles other than a crane hook.
The loop consists of a galvanised steel wire rope with the ends swaged together with an aluminum ferrule
to form a closed loop. Every loop is marked with its safe lifting capacity as well as the Manufacturer’s mark.
Our range varies between 800kg to 99T however the most popular are those up to 25 Ton.
Loops are cast into precast unit and provide a quick and effective method for transporting and installing
concrete units. The exposed portion of the loop is cut off after installation and the remainder is sealed to
prevent staining.
Loops where possible, it is preferable for the loop to be aligned so pitching is in the direction of the arrow
(see below). Generally, loops greater than 4 tonne capacity should not be used for pitching, due to the
stiffness of the loop.
CAST IN LOOPS 4-2
ADDITIONAL REINFORCEMENT
It is imperative to carefully check cast in loops for any defects including corrosion
or broken strands. If a loop is identified as damaged it should be disposed of
immediately.
CAST IN LOOPS 4-4
POLYPROPYLENE LOOPS
One of the most popular, economic and simple methods for lifting precast concrete is the one use only
cast-in lifting loop. These loops don’t require special lifting shackles other than a crane hook.
Produced from Polypropylene rope with the ends swaged together with an aluminum ferrule to form a
closed loop. Every loop is marked with its safe lifting capacity as well as the Manufacturer’s mark. The loops
range from 150kg to 1200kg for axial and angled lifts up to 15Nmm2 and pitching for 20N/mm2 and over.
Pitching and angled lifts reduce the working load by 50%.
