ENGGEN 121 Engineering Mechanics
Dynamics Test, February 10th 2016

Time allowed: 1 hour

Attempt ALL four questions, each carry equal marks

Write your final answers in the boxes provided on the question pages.

Free body diagrams must be drawn for kinetics questions.

The work justifying your answer must be shown on the relevant pages. If there is
not enough space for your working, you may continue on the back of the page, but
PLEASE PUT A TICK in the box provided.

Restricted calculators may be used but not books, notes etc.

1. An out-of-control jet boat initially travelling at 3 m/s gains speed at a constant rate of 1.5 m/s2
toward a beach 100 metres away. Upon hitting the beach, the boat decelerates across the sand
at a rate of 0.2v2 (m/s2), where v is speed in m/s.
(a) How fast is the boat travelling when it hits the beach?
(b) How long does it take the boat to slow to 3 m/s after hitting the beach and what is the
distance travelled across the sand before reaching this speed?

2. When the tennis player serves the
ball at θ = 5º as shown, the ball
hits the court 5 metres behind the
net (s = 5 m). Ignoring any
aerodynamic effects, calculate
the velocity v of the ball at A

3. The 4500-kg flatbed truck is carrying a 200-kg crate at a
constant 50 km/h as shown. Suddenly, the driver slams
brakes which provide a total braking force of 11.3 kN to
avoid an accident. The coefficients of static and kinetic
friction between the crate and the flatbed surface are 0.2
and 0.18 respectively. Assume the truck wheels don’t slip
relative to the road surface while braking.
(a) Draw clear and separate free body diagrams of the crate and truck.
(b) Determine whether the crate will slip or not and calculate the accelerations of the crate
and truck.

4. For the system shown, particle A has a velocity of 2 m/s in the A ω
direction shown and is accelerating at a rate of 1.2 m/s2 along the
same direction. Particle B is rotating about fixed axis O at a B
constant angular velocity ω. At the instant shown, an observer at A
measures the acceleration of particle B to be 1.7 m/s2 due West. North r = 250 m
(a) Draw a clear acceleration diagram to relate the acceleration of
particle B to particle A. O

(b) Calculate the angular velocity of particle B, ω, and its angular

position, θ. Not to scale
