0.0 Scope
This method contains the instructions for installing a Centrilift ESP motor.
1.0 Safety
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn at all times. Individual well
sites have special equipment requirements for PPE and it is the field service
technician’s responsibility to be aware of these requirements prior to arriving on site.
Empty or partially empty canisters of motor oil shall not be distributed to any person
or company but shall be returned to either the Service Center or the F-S station for
disposal according to local HS&E regulations.
Lifting equipment to the wellhead is hazardous and can cause serious injury if the
lifting equipment fails. Verify the lifting rating and certification of all lifting
equipment prior to each use.
2.0 Method
2.1. If a table will be used on the rig floor, ensure it is level and secure enough to
support the whole system.
2.2. All lifting clamps should be certified for the lifting weight. Visually inspect for
damage and wear each time the clamp/chains are used and certified once per year.
2.3. Open the boxes and attach the lifting clamps on the single or lower tandem motor.
Chains must not be twisted and the clamps must not be over tightened (50 Lb/Ft)
to avoid misshaping head (motor, seal, etc.) and prevent normal assembly of the
equipment. Hook the chains and clamps to the auxiliary crane.

2.4. Position the slings approximately a quarter of the equipment length from each end.
Lift carefully with the crane and ease gently toward the platform. Attach the
elevators to the clamp chain.
2.5. The Crane Operator in conjunction with the driller should maneuver the
equipment into the vertical position, ensuring the base end clears the rig floor.

2.6. Avoid dragging the motor base with a down-hole monitoring device as they are
not designed to withstand side loading. The more typical installation involves
moving the equipment to the rig using the rig's secondary hoisting device (tugger
line) and the clamp and sling system. The sling is then attached to the elevator
and the equipment lifted over the well. Tailing (controlling the lower end of the
equipment) is then accomplished using several methods, including hand guiding
and guiding using a rope or chain.
2.7. The crane operator together with the installation crew must handle the motor
carefully until vertical position is reached, ensuring the motor base does not drag
or hit the rig. If the equipment is coated, it will need to be handled carefully to
avoid damage to the coating. If non-metallic straps are available when coated
equipment is being installed, they should be used to prevent scratching the coating.
Repair any damaged areas with touch up kit.
2.8. Once the motor is in a vertical position, attach the centralizer or sensor to the
bottom of the motor. Remove the shipping plug from the motor base and attach
the centralizer using thread grease and tighten (typically the threads are 2” NPT).

2.9. Tighten all the motor base bolts according to CFSM 2.12.
2.10. IMPORTANT: Remove all plugs and fill valves to change all washers (lead
washers, o-rings or CL10 washers) for new ones.
2.11. Before installing the vent plug and the fill valve with a new lead gasket, make
sure all the parts are clean, including the hole where they will be installed. The
surface where lead gaskets will be installed must be clean with no scratches.

2.12. Tighten plugs and fill valves according to the recommended torque in valves and
bolts torque procedure.

2.13. Carefully lower the bottom motor to the well until the lifting clamp rests on the
hydraulic jack on the table. If installing a single motor it will sit directly on the
table or wellhead.
2.14. Remove the shipping cap and the shipping gasket.

Ensure that the shipping cap gasket has been completely removed from the
head.
2.15. Verify motor rotation is smooth and shaft extension is correct using the correct
gauge.

2.16. Vacuum fill the motor according to CFSM 2.2.

Fill the motor with a new un-opened container of Centrilift oil, do not use a
container that was opened and used during another install.
2.17. When finished filling, place the shipping cap temporarily on the motor head to
prepare the equipment for assembly.

3.0 Tandem Motor Installation:

3.1. Open the boxes and set the lifting clamps on the upper motor.
3.2. Chains must not be twisted and do not over tighten clamps to prevent misshaping
the motor head, which would prevent normal equipment assembly.
3.3. Position the slings approximately a quarter of the equipment length from each end.
3.4. Lift carefully with the crane and ease gently toward the platform. Attach the
elevators to the clamp chain.
3.5. Stand the upper motor above the lower motor approximately 24” to 35”.
3.6. Remove the lower shipping cap from the upper motor, (be careful not to drop the
coupling down the hole from the upper motor when removing the shipping cap).
3.7. Remove the shipping plug from the shaft.
3.8. Align the coupling and fully insert it onto the both the lower and upper equipment
to ensure it fits properly.
3.9. Check o-ring grooves, which must be clean with no scratches.
3.10. Clean the grooves and replace o-rings with new ones and lubricate with Centrilift
motor oil.

3.11. Remove the vacuum oil filling cap from the lower motor.
3.12. There are two methods for motor coupling:
3.12.1. The first method uses a spline alignment tool.

3.12.2. Insert the tool in to the lower motor shaft and choose a reference hole to line
up shaft splines. Then, insert the tool in to the upper motor shaft, referencing
the hole chosen in the lower motor.
3.12.3. The second method uses a motor-motor coupling with shaft rotation tool.

3.12.4. Like the previous method, insert the coupling and shaft rotation tool into the
lower motor shaft. Choose a reference hole to line up shaft splines.
3.12.5. Then insert the coupling and the shaft rotation tool into the upper motor.
Use the reference hole chosen in the lower motor to line up shaft splines in
the same direction as the lower motor splines.
3.12.6. Set the coupling into the lower motor shaft and clean all the area with clean
oil. Do not use pliers to set the coupling, it could mark the coupling.

3.12.7. IMPORTANT: Do not wear gloves during this part of the operation because
the insulating oil could be contaminated.
3.12.8. Keep hands and fingers away from the mating flanges as the motors are
being lowered, this is a pinch point!
3.12.9. Line up the upper motor with the lower motor. Use the special jacks for
tandem motors and lift the lower motor slowly. The line-up is achieved by
means of the guide pins.

3.12.10. Once the flanges have met, install two bolts to use as a guide for threaded
holes.
3.12.11. The assembly must be carried out slowly and safely, checking to make sure
there is no interference with the pins or coupling.

3.12.12. Install the rest of the bolts and the lock washers. Remove any motor oil in
the bolt holes to prevent damaging the motor head and incorrect bolt
tightness due to hydraulic pressure.
3.12.13. Tighten bolts to the recommended torque, according to procedure CFSM
2.12.
3.12.14. Remove the lifting clamp from the lower motor head and remove the
hydraulic jacks.
3.12.15. IMPORTANT:
3.12.15.1. Remove all plugs and fill valves and change all washers (lead, o-
rings or CL10) for new ones.
3.12.15.2. Before installing the plug and the fill valve with new washers
(lead, CL-10 or o-ring), make sure all the parts are clean as well as
the hole where they will be installed. The surface where washers
or o-rings will be set; must be clean with no scratches. Be sure to
remove the old washers before installing a new one and be careful
not to scratch the seat when removing the old washers.

CFSM 2.12.

Zero Leak Lead washer

3.12.16. Lower the motors to sit the motor lifting clamp on the table or wellhead.
3.12.17. Remove the shipping cap and gasket or o-rings to verify shaft rotation and
extension of the upper motor. Take special care not to get gasket material
into the top of the motor.
3.12.18. Vacuum fill the motor according to CFSM 2.2.
3.12.19. When filling is completed, place the shipping cap temporarily back on the
motor head to prepare for equipment assembly.
3.12.20. IMPORTANT:
3.12.20.1. If it is not possible to perform the Vacuum Filling Procedure
proceed as follows:
3.12.20.2. Set aside the shipping cap with lock washers or remove the vent
plug from the shipping cap.

3.12.20.3. Lift the motor until motor base is at working level.

3.12.20.4. Remove all plugs and valves to change all lead washers for new
ones.
3.12.20.5. Connect the oil pump fill adapter in the motor base fill valve.

3.12.20.6. Pump the oil slowly until it emerges from the motor head. Wait
from 1 to 5 minutes to allow air to exit the motor.
3.12.20.7. Repeat the process until oil flows after one oil pump rotation.
3.12.20.8. Remove the oil fill adapter.
3.12.20.9. Before installing the plug and the fill valve with new lead gaskets,
make sure all the parts are clean as well as the hole where they will
be installed. The surface where lead gaskets will be set must be
clean with no scratches. Be sure to remove the old lead gasket
before installing a new one and be careful not to scratch a seat
when removing a gasket.
3.12.20.10. Tighten the plugs and valves according to the recommended torque
in CFSM 2.12.
3.12.21. Important information about 375 MLE Cable Installation:
3.12.21.1. The 2 piece 375 pothead (gold colored) when installed into the
motor will use the bolts and washers from the shipping cap of the
pothead, not the motor. The motor shipping cap bolts are too long
and will not allow proper sealing of the pothead to the motor head.
3.12.21.2. Use new o-rings, discard the old ones.
3.12.21.3. Carefully unfold and flatten the lead gasket. Place it over the o-
rings and down around the face of the pothead.
3.12.21.4. The standard molded 375 pothead will use the bolts from the motor.
