0.0 Scope
This method contains the instructions for installing a Centrilift seal section.
1.0 Safety
All Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn at all times. Individual
well sites have special equipment requirements for PPE and it is the field service
technician’s responsibility to be aware of these requirements prior to arriving on
site.
Empty or partially empty canisters of motor oil shall not be distributed to any
person or company but shall be returned to either the Service Center or the F-S
station for disposal according to local HS&E regulations.
2.0 Seal Section Installation
2.1. General Recommendations
2.1.1. Replace all lead washers
2.1.2. Replace all o-rings, never reuse
2.1.3. Make sure all bolt holes are cleaned and all oil is removed
2.1.4. Be sure the bolt hole threads are in good shape
2.1.5. Open the shipping box, if applicable, and place the lifting clamps on
the seal head.
2.1.6. CAUTION: Chains should not be twisted and do not over tighten
the clamps (50 Lb/Ft), since the head could be deformed (egg
shaped) and cause problems preventing the normal assembly of
the equipment.
2.1.7. Torque the lead washers according to CFSM 2.12 procedure.
2.2. Put slings around the lower end of the seal body, a quarter of the distance
from the base end; then hook the chain to the crane and carefully lift slowly to
the rig.
2.3. CAUTION: The seal sections should not be lifted to the rig by hand, only
with the use of clamp and rig elevator.

2.4. Be careful not to drop the coupling down hole when removing the lower
shipping cap since the seal to the motor coupling is inside this cap.
2.5. CAUTION: Remember that the seal to motor spline coupling is typically
in the seal base. The coupling is in the motor head for 544 and 562 series.

2.6. Inspect and clean the o-ring grooves; there should be no burrs or scratches.
Always replace the o-rings with new ones, DO NOT REUSE O-RINGS;
DOING SO WILL CAUSE FAILURES.

2.7. Remove the motor shipping cap, place the motor to seal coupling on the motor
shaft (it should have a spring) and flush the area with clean oil.
Verify that all of the shipping cap gasket has been removed from the motor head.

INSTALLATION - SEAL Date: 1-18-09

2.8. Move the seal above the motor head.

2.9. Ensure the seal and motor are vertically aligned and there is no side to side
movement when trying to stab into the motor head. This can damage the o-
rings and cause burrs in the motor head that will cut the o-rings.
2.10. Slowly lower the seal until the coupling spring compresses on the motor shaft,
if needed rotate the seal until the coupling “pops” up indicating that it is lined
up and fits on the seal shaft. DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS BETWEEN
THE FLANGES!
2.11. Watch while the flanges mate to make sure the o-rings are not broken or
damaged.
2.12. If damage occurs, it is necessary to change it before proceeding with the seal
to motor assembly.

2.13. Remove any oil that may have leaked into the bolt holes.
2.14. Place the bolts and lock washers in each hole, making sure the holes do not
contain motor oil, which can prevent the bolts from tightening up properly due
to hydraulic pressure.
2.15. Tighten the bolts to the recommended torque according to CFSM 2.12.

INSTALLATION - SEAL Date: 1-18-09

2.16. CAUTION: Remember that if applicable the MLE cable protector must be
installed (for example walrus teeth, as shown below) at this time.

2.17. Remove the clamp from the motor head.

2.18. If deemed necessary to check the motor again, clean the area around the
pothead port with clean oil and remove the pothead terminal cap of the motor.
Install a test fixture and check the phase to phase electric readings.

Testing A-B Testing A-C Testing B-C

2.19. Measure the resistance of the down-hole sensor phase to ground (if
applicable).
2.20. If seals are not already assembled, place the slings around the upper seal body
at a quarter from the base end and then hook the clamp chains to the rig
elevator. Lift the seal carefully and slowly to the rig.

2.21. Remove the lower shipping cap carefully since the seal-seal coupling is placed
inside this cap. Inspect o-ring grooves, which must be clean and without
scratches. Clean and replace o-rings with new ones.

2.22. Remove the lower seal shipping cap as well as all the gasket material.

2.23. Clean the flange to remove any remaining gasket (do not get any gasket
material into the lower seal).

2.24. Place the coupling on the shaft. See the note below for coupling installation.

2.25. CAUTION: (513 seals only) If the pump thrust is going to be supported by
the upper seal, the seal to seal coupling must be identified with PN: 56756 &
BTM (shorter spline), towards the lower seal shaft. If there is a shaft seal plug
in the lower seal shaft, it needs to be removed.

2.26. If the thrust transference is going to be supported by the lower seal, i.e. “TL”
(Thrust on Lower), the seal to seal coupling must be identified with: BTM IF
TL (longer spline), towards the lower seal shaft.

2.27. Set the upper seal on the lower seal and slowly lower until the coupling slides
on the shaft and o-rings seat into the lower seal, (make sure that the o-rings fit
easily in the interior diameter of the lower seal head). If any of the o-rings are
damaged, it is extremely important to replace them before proceeding with the
seal to seal assembly.

2.28. Place the bolts and lock washers into the holes of the upper seal, making sure
the holes do not contain oil motor, which can prevent bolts from tightening
properly due to hydraulic pressure.

2.29. Tighten bolts to the recommended torque according to CFSM 2.12.

2.30. Remove the upper shipping cap and perform shaft extension check in the
vertical position.
2.31. Lift equipment until the top motor head is seen. Proceed with filling seal, as
stated below:
2.32. NOTE: The seal section is designed to handle oil volume expansion and
contraction due to the changes in pressure and temperature down hole.
2.33. It important to remove all the air when filling the seal to prevent failures!
2.34. Basic Filling Instructions
2.34.1. Good oil quality: oil to be clean with minimum 30KV dielectric
strength.
2.34.2. Complete fill with no trapped air.
2.34.3. When filling, pump oil at a rate no faster than 1 revolution per
second (60 rpm). Once the oil has reached each vent location stop
pumping for 10 seconds then resume at a slower pump rate of 1
revolution per 5 seconds (12 rpm) to allow air to exit the port slowly.
Install the screw while pumping to prevent any air entrapment.

Rev: B
INSTALLATION - SEAL Date: 1-18-09
2.34.4. Always purge the oil pump hose of air prior to plugging to the fill
adapter
2.34.5. As oil begins to come out of each vent-port, always slow the rate of
pumping until oil exiting the port is free of air. Use new gasket
material to plug each vent plug (reference Tech Brief 2002-13).
2.34.6. Do not allow excessive pressure build up inside the seal.
2.34.7. Do not allow the oil container to become empty. Pumping with no
oil in the container will introduce air into the seal. It is
recommended to use a transparent discharge hose so air bubbles will
be visible and prevent air being put into the seal.
2.34.8. Maintain cleanliness of internal components. Do not allow dust or
other particles to enter the seal. Clean around areas that expose the
interior.
2.35. The construction plug is between the drain and vent plugs, the hole on the
right is the vent plug and the one on the left is the drain plug.
2.36. With seal and motor hanging over the wellhead, cover annular space so that
material can not fall in the well.

2.37. Remove the plug from the motor head fill valve with the check valve wrench.

2.38. If the fill valve leaks oil, it should be replaced with a new one as well as lead
washers.

2.39. Tighten the fill valve with new lead washer to the recommended torque
according to CFSM 2.12 procedures.
2.40. Do not fill the unit with a container that has already been opened and used
during a previous installation, only canisters that have been opened during the
current install can be used.
2.41. Purge the hose of air and thread into the fill valve.

3.0 Fill Lower Tandem - Lower Chamber (Labyrinth Chamber)

3.1. Remove all vent plugs and lead washers and verify that all threads and sealing
surfaces are clean.
3.2. Start pumping oil into the seal from the motor drain/fill valve until oil starts
coming out of the first vent hole. There will probably be air in the oil stream,
pause for a minute allowing the air to work its way to the top. Pump more oil
into the seal again until more oil/air comes out of the vent again.

3.3. Repeat until the oil stream is clear of air bubbles.

3.4. Pump until the oil stream is free of air bubbles as seen here.
3.5. Install a plug with the new lead washer in the vent hole and torque according
to CFSM 2.12 procedure.
4.0 Fill Lower Tandem - Center Chamber
4.1. Verify the vent hole plug and lead washer have been removed in the upper
guide.
4.2. Continue pumping oil from the motor head filling valve.
4.3. Pump oil until it comes out free of air bubbles through the vent hole.

4.4. Install a plug with the new lead washer in the vent hole and torque according
to CFSM 2.12 procedure.
