Unit 3 : Multiplication

 What is Multiplication?
Multiplication is a basic arithmetic operator. It is denoted
by ‘x’ (cross) sign.
 Properties :

Commutative property: When two numbers are multiplied

together, the product is the same regardless of the order of
the multiplicands. Eg: 4 * 2 = 2 * 4

Associative Property: When three or more numbers are

multiplied, the product is the same regardless of the
grouping of the factors. Eg:(2 * 3) * 4 = 2 * (3 * 4)

Multiplicative Identity Property: The product of any number

and one is that number. Eg: 5 * 1 = 5.

Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third

number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third
number. Eg: 4 * (6 + 3) = 4*6 + 4*3.

Lesson Plan – Division

Duration 1 hour

Unit 4 : Division
 What is Divison?
Division is a basic arithmetic operator. It is denoted by ‘/’ symbol. It
is the result of fair sharing. It is the inverse of multiplication.

For eg: There are 12 chocolates , and 3 friends want to share them,
how do they divide the chocolates?

Ans : 12 divided by 3 is equal to 4, where 12 = dividend

3 = divisor and 4 = quotient.

 Properties :
Division as repeated subtraction.
Eg: Solve 20 / 5 by repeated subtraction method :
First, 20 – 5 = 15
15 – 5 = 10
10 – 5 = 5
5–5=0
Thus, we can conclude that division is repeated subtraction of the same
number from the given number.

Division by grouping.
Eg : Make a student distribute 20 books to 5 students equally.

Activity 4 :
 Numericals :
Solve by using standard division method.

1. 5) 6 5 ( 2. 2) 7 4 ( 3. 4) 4 8 (

4.7) 7 0 ( 5. 3) 8 1 ( 6. 9) 1 1 7 (

1) There are 14 students in the class and 14 crayons. If the crayons are divided
equally among the students, how many crayons will each student get?
(Ans:1)
2) There are 144 pencils in Nikhil’s pencil collection. If the pencils are organized
into 2 groups, how big is each group? (Ans:72)
3) There are 97 students in the class and 8148 blocks. If the blocks are divided
equally among the students, how many does each student get? (Ans: 84)
4) Krithika is inviting 7 friends to a party. She has 28 cookies. How many cookies
will each friend get? (Ans:4)
