CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Project Context

Nowadays we heard so many cases about the loss motorcycle. It is not just the cases that have
been reported but they are also many cases that is not been reported. The safety of
vehicles is extremely essential for every private and public vehicle owner. One of the
major problems that motorists face is the robbery or theft of vehicles. It is also considered
as one of the biggest fears of every vehicle owner aside from crashing. Vehicles typically get
stolen for several reasons. Some people steal them simply to joyride around, and the theft is one
opportunity. Others steal vehicles to commit additional crimes while others steal vehicles to
strip them of parts or to sell them. One type of vehicle found easy to steal is the
motorcycle.

Professional thieves often find the vehicle they want to steal by following the user of the
vehicle to where they park during the day or night. Then they size up the situation and
come back with what they need to bag the vehicle. So, as user approaches the destination,
especially at home, thieves just grab it or find ways to have it. Most of the time, locking the
vehicle and placing chains are the only way to make vehicles secured. When motorists are far
from the place where they park their vehicle they always tend to check if it is still there.
Sometimes, thieves put the vehicle inside a van or a cargo truck to transport if it is small. There
is adequate and no easy way for the owners to find their vehicle than to call for a help
from active respondents like the police . However, the police may take a long time to find the
vehicle for lack of source or devices that will easily locate the vehicle. There are no alarms
that make them aware that vehicles are being stolen or users are in emergency
situations. Fast response is very much needed in these kinds of situations.

Purpose and Description of the Project

The main purpose of Arduino-based Motorcycle anti-theft system with GSM and GPS module is
to gain immediate knowledge of safety and security to minimize and reduce stolen motorcycles
theft incident. This project is concerned with the designing and developing of GSM car security
system which can be used for the commercial project at motorcycles. An advantage of this
project is it can reduce motorcycle theft and give early warning to owner when their motorcycle
is breach. Combination of GSM and GPS communication and interfacing with microcontroller
develop using arduino compiler. Once the motorcycle is being breach or stolen, the information
and location will be transmitted wirelessly to the owner of the vehicle. The microcontroller will
be used to interface with the GSM modem in the event of data transmission. The owner also can
communicate locate and deactivate the engine of motorcycle with the Relay,GSM and GPS
module through owner of the phone.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

General Objective
In general, the main objective of this of this proposed system is to design and develop advanced
vehicle tracking and anti-theft locking system in the real time measurement, so as to get exact
current status of your vehicle wireless Technology

Specific Objectives

 To have a system that prioritizes the safety of every motorist that is on and off the road
by monitoring and preventing motorcycle theft in urban and rural community.
 To locate quickly and enhance the follow up operation time of the nearest police station
in the community.
 To design and construct a remotely controlled vehicle anti-theft system via GSM
network.
 To be able to access the vehicle subsystems from a remote/distant location where there is
a GSM coverage

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT

Scope
The scope of this project is to design and construct motorcycle anti theft system
interfaced with a microcontroller unit and GSM and GPS module with the wireless
communication features over SMS. Within the scope of this project, the prototype model
is equipped with a dedicated SIM Subscriber Identification Module.

Limitations
The researchers expected a list of limitations along the way considering the scope stated
above. The limitations of the project outcome cover the following:

 There must be battery in order for the system to function.

 The limitation of this project is that the system would not be able to perform
communication get the real status of the location when there is no network coverage.

Significance of the Study

The aim is to develop a motorcycle anti theft system with SMS for the motorist in urban
and rural communities. Moreover, it will be very advantageous to the following:
MOTORIST IN RURAL AND URBAN COMMUNITIES: This result will provide the
families in rural and urban with some knowledge on how motorcycle theft incidents can be
avoided. This study will give suggestions on how to improve the motorist on motorcycle
prevention which in turn may result better opportunities. At the end of the study it will give the
motorist realization that stolen motorcycle incidents have been a major problem to the
communities and the Law enforcement agencies.
MOTORCYCLE AND VEHICLE OWNERS: Our project can help prevent and reduce
motorcycle theft inside the premises by creating this anti theft system. The proposed study will
benefit the individual members of motorist in rural and urban communities in terms of
preventing stolen motorcycles such as stolen for joy-riding, use in committing another crime,
stripping, scrapping, or reselling. Also, it offers convenience and safety on their part in the sense
that they make use of motorcycle anti theft system.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Theoretical Background
This project is design around an Arduino UNO. Arduino-based home fire alarm system
with GSM and GPS module can be describe as introduction of technology within the community
remote areas to provide Safety and comfort to its motorist. There are many projects that aim to
help the clients preventing and avoiding stolen motorcycles from happening. This application is
somehow effective; however, the problem occurs when any pointed materials is inserted off from
the ignition key it will turn on the engine depends on how they take it .This is where Arduino-
based motorcycle anti theft system with GSM and GPS module is coming to play using GSM
and GPS module as a gateway pass to notify send SMS and location from the place if ever the
motorcycle is stolen.

With the proposed additional level of safety and prevention, the proponents believed that
would be plausible to reduce stolen motorcycle incidents to remote areas within the urban and
rural communities.

Related Literature
As mentioned earlier in the previous chapter, cost factor plays a very important role in this
project. Subsequently, to design a system with the objectives mentioned above requires research
and studies that are described in this chapter. This chapter will include three subtopics, previous
case study on anti theft device systems, hardware and software studies.

Group of lecturer has created a design that controls other electrical equipments by using SMS as
the ways to switch on or off the devices. This circuit can control the devices by sending the
specific SMS through mobile phone. The circuit is very simple where it uses relay as switch and
AT commands as modem command that can understand the data send from PIC microcontroller.
This design modified the mobile phone to work as a transmitter part that can send SMS when the
switch is triggered. Ericsson T10 mobile phone is used in this circuit where terminal of
communication at mobile phone operates at 5V control by AT9052313. 13

Noraishah bt. Mohd Tahir [14] has designed a security system used for motorcycle. The system
used the limit switch as the sensor of the system to trigger the circuit. The limit switch is placed
at double stand of the motorcycle where it functions as sensor to indicate any movements at
motorcycle while the system in on mode. When intruders wants to move the motorcycle, it’s
automatically trigger the microcontroller circuit to send the notification SMS to the owners to
follow up actions. From this two related works, it is stated that both of this related works are
using GSM modem or modified hand phone to send SMS to owner to inform when there is
intruder which is similar to the objective of this project. Both work also use AT command to
interface with microcontroller. The differences are that both work using difference
microcontroller and different application

There have been many studies on vehicle tracking and antitheft. In this section, we only explore
the most relevant work in the areas.Mobile Tracking. Vehicle tracking is often discussed with
mobile tracking, due to the wide deployment of smartphones among drivers and passengers.
Some phone tracking services, such as Apple MobileMe, and Samsung Dive, can help a user find
a missing smartphone, which supports GPS and cellular/WiFi-based localization. However,
cellular localization is not really accurate. 'e accuracy of this method ranges from 100 meters to
several kilometers, mainly depending on the number of cell towers detected . WiFi-based
localization suffers from low coverage, especially in rural areas and many developing regions us
dead reckoning has become a popular localization method for mobile tracking. In vehicle
trajectory is estimated by an odometer and a gyroscope, and a single data-fusion process based
on particle filter performs both positioning and map matching. In a context-aided Kalman filter
for urban vehicle navigation is proposed, where contextual knowledge as sensor quality and
driving context is used to carry out a continuous estimation and correction of sensor drift errors.
In, a cellular network-based vehicle tracking scheme is proposed, in which vehicle velocity and
heading direction, obtained by a speedometer and a heading sensor, are directly employed in the
optimization for position determination. vTrack builds a system to estimate a users’ trajectory
and travel time by WiFi and GPS, in which a Hidden Markov Model- (HMM-) based map
matching scheme and travel time estimation method are performed. Since the HMM and

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
The researcher’s observation in view of this system is that most of it is built to locate and
immobilize or kill the engine of the motorcycle which effectively to quickly locate the
Motorcycle on the specific location. With this concern, the proponents found an opportunity to
make a system that will give the clients a convenient way in preventing motorcycle theft
incidents and reducing out the numbers of stolen motorcycle yearly and helping the law
enforcement units to quickly locate and respond on the location. Through the system, the owner
of the motorcycle are the only authorized persons who can send the message and locate to
quickly deactivate and kill the engine of the motorcycle , in this way it will help them locate the
location quickly and respond efficiently and quickly, monitor and prevent for joy-riding, use in
committing another crime, stripping, scrapping, or reselling. The proponents also added some
features in this system, a GSM and GPS module which you can send SMS to kill the engine
immediately and Location reports on the GPS to the owner, a Buzzer or alarms that sounds when
stolen or force breached on the motorcycle.

The proposed system will use the Arduino system in view of the modules that will be used
throughout the system. In this project we are using a GPS and GSM and Relay module The
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of at least
24 satellites. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day,
with no subscription fees or setup charges. GSM is an international standard for mobile
telephones. It is an acronym that stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. It is also
sometimes referred to as 2G, as it is a second-generation cellular network.

Among other things, GSM supports outgoing and incoming voice calls, Simple Message System
(SMS or text messaging), and data communication (via GPRS).

The Arduino GSM shield is a GSM modem. From the mobile operator perspective, the Arduino
GSM shield looks just like a mobile phone. From the Arduino perspective, the Arduino GSM
shield looks just like a modem.

A relay is an electrically operated switch that can be turned on or off, letting the current go
through or not, and can be controlled with low voltages, like the 5V provided by the Arduino
pins.
This relay module has two channels (those blue cubes). There are other models with one, four
and eight channels. This module should be powered with 5V, which is appropriate to use with an
Arduino. There are other relay modules that are powered using 3.3V, which is ideal for ESP32,
ESP8266, and other microcontrollers.
The following are the list of software, hardware and tools that we will be using throughout the
implementation:

METHODOLOGY

Technical Feasibility

The Arduino-based home fire alarm system with GSM module System is a fire prevention
system comprising an Arduino microcontroller, GPS, RELAY and a GSM module. The system is
placed around the compartments of the motorcycle. This allows for another level of motorcycle
safety and security to be implemented within the motorist. A miniature model of a motorcycle
will be used for the proposed system.

The system includes the following main features:

 An Arduino board will serve as the microcontroller for the system. It is used to write and
upload the computer code to the physical board. It has a high level programming
language, which means there are multiple arrays of libraries that can be used.
 GSM module A GSM module or a GPRS module is a chip or circuit that will be used to
establish communication between a mobile device or a computing machine and a
GSM or GPRS system.
 GPS module NEO-6M GPS module with the Arduino to get GPS data. GPS stands
for Global Positioning System and can be used to determine position, time, and speed if
you’re travelling.
 Relay Module is used to control or switch devices which use a higher power.
 Arduino IDE will be used as the compiler for the microcontroller code.
 Buzzer is an audio signaling device which will be used as an indicator for a successful
scan of the RFID.
 LED is a semiconductor light source that emits light when a current flows through it.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

We have successfully developed and implemented a vehicle tracking system that gives feedback
information of the location of stolen vehicle using GPS-GSM technology. It is user friendly,
easily installable, easily accessible and can be used for various other purposes. The system is not
limited to find the location of the target but also deactivate the engine thru sending SMS. If this
project is properly implemented it will improves safety, reduce vehicle loss due to theft, increase
productivity, reduce diversion of routes by transport company’s drivers. We are still working on
the possibility of improving on the system to give SMS feedback to the vehicle owner when an
accident occurs. This will help to reduce the delay in evacuation of accident victims to hospital
and reduce the chances of losing life.

Recommendations After a very careful, thorough research and analysis process, here are some
recommendations from the researchers in order to enhance future works/study of this application.
1. Make use of the other functional parts of the motorcycle such as its horn and lights as an
alarm or buzzer;
2. Create a web application for the mobile application to sync alert logs and location logs and to
back-up all the information in the mobile application; and
3. Create a mobile application for alternative online monitoring and control of the system.
