Catalog Description: This course introduces computer terminology, hardware, and software related to the
business environment. The focus of this course is on business productivity software applications and professional
behavior in computing, including word processing (as needed), spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics,
and business-oriented utilization of the Internet.
Prerequisites: None
Learning Outcomes:
After studying all materials and resources presented in the course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the fundamentals of Information Technology (IT) infrastructure components: hardware, software,
and data communications systems.
2. Explain the guiding principles of professional behavior in computing.
3. Demonstrate proper file management techniques to manipulate electronic files and folders in a local and
networked environment.
4. Use business productivity software to manipulate data and find solutions to business problems.
5. Explain the concepts and terminology used in the operation of application systems in a business
environment.
6. Identify emerging technologies for use in business applications.
7. Complete projects that integrate business software applications.
Course Content:
A general description of lecture/discussion topics included in this course are listed in the Learning Objectives
section of this syllabus.
Students in all sections of this course will learn the following content:
1. Computer Basics
a. Define computer and identify the basic computing functions.
b. Identify types of hardware devices and their uses.
c. Identify types of software and their uses.
d. Identify ethically responsible and safe computing practices.
e. Describe networks.
f. Define network terms.
2. Business Productivity Software
a. Terms and concepts as they relate to Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
b. Skills required to use Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint to manipulate data and create
solutions to business problems.
3. Final Topic
a. Identify emerging technologies for use in business application.
Assessment(s)
Major Exams
1. A minimum of two proctored exams will be assigned per semester.
2. A final exam will be assigned.
