Cameron Belt Press Systems . . .

LaVezzi 1/4” pitch sprockets drive the printing plates
of this Cameron Belt Press. The large, precision sprockets
enable synchronization not possible with friction drives.
This particular system can produce over 23,000 paperback
books per hour while eliminating many manual and labor
intensive operations associated with web press printing.

VKF™ SPROCKETS . . . “VERY KIND TO FILM”

Whether driving film, perforated lead frames or in TAB applications, protecting perforations against
premature failure is often critical. Thus the form and finish of the VKF sprocket has been designed to
reduce damage to the perforation.

The VKF tooth has a maximum width across the flat driving face to minimize the stress on the perforation
face. The corners of the teeth have been radiused to clear the perforation radii. This eliminates the
potential for damage when lateral motion causes the perforations to slide over a relatively square standard
tooth corner.

The finish of the VKF tooth form has been enhanced using the Radi-Blend™ process. With this procedure,
every intersecting tooth edge, both at the sides and the top, is blended and burnished to offer a polished
surface. This insures a smooth engagement and disengagement of the perforated edge with the tooth
surface.

Although the stock VKF design was originally intended for materials perforated per ANSI-SMPTE 102-1991
or 139-1986 (see following stock parts, pages 9 and 10), the process may be applied to other tooth forms.
Super 16 and 35, as well as 70mm tooth shapes, have been improved using this procedure (see Posi-Trol,
page 11). Contact LaVezzi for information on variations or other similar applications.

To minimize side-to-side motion of film or other perforated media,

LaVezzi offers the Posi-Trol design.

The tooth form of the Posi-Trol line has been dimensioned to fill the perforation
(on one band) as fully as possible. This allows the material to be guided at the
perforations and eliminates the need for guide flanges, rollers, rails or shoes.

The wide teeth have been properly machined to insure no interference with the
corner radii of the film or other materials. The narrow teeth are dimensioned for
driving only (see Figures 1 and 2).

Note that this design can be modified to suit various application requirements.
For example, the radial tooth width can be increased to minimize backlash. Also,
this tooth form can be utilized with any size sprocket with any number of teeth.

Caution! The Posi-Trol line may not be used with material perforated per
ANSI-SMPTE Standard 102-1991.

Figure 1
The four corners of the wide tooth band have been
radiused to avoid interference with the fillet radius.
The amount of clearance can be modified to suit a
particular application.

.020 TYP
Figure 2
The wide (right) tooth band fills the perforation
width while the narrow band allows for non-uniform
lateral spacing and also drives the material. .020

CHART DRIVE
SPROCKET ASSEMBLIES
LaVezzi provides a line of custom chart drive sprocket drum
assemblies by combining the sprockets described on pages
20-22 with matching ground aluminum cylinders. The cylinders
are made of 6061 extruded aluminum tubing which is ground for
a smooth writing surface. The chosen sprockets are properly
aligned and bonded to insure perfect alignment between the
two rows of teeth.

When transporting more abrasive materials,

the wear life of the sprocket teeth can be
improved by adding a hardcoat finish.

If a sprocket is required at
one end only, the other end -B-
can be supplied with an end
cap (see below).

-L-
To order, simply specify the
(UP TO 24")
sprocket type and the length
(‘L’) of the finished assembly.

For special additions or

modifications, please call, -B-
fax or write our engineering
department for assistance.

PRECISION RUBBER

For impact printing or friction drives where the positive driving capability of a
sprocket is not required, LaVezzi offers two diameters of rubber covered rollers.

These 60 Durometer Nitrile covered aluminum drums, mounted on aluminum

hubs, can be supplied in any length up to 13”. To ensure clear printing, the
surface is ground to a smooth finish and is free of voids or soft spots.

Where a positive drive is required in conjunction with the rubber coating,

the end pieces can be replaced with a variety of stock sprockets
similar to designs shown on page 23.

Besides their
primary use as a
printing surface,
these rollers can

Design Guide For Sprockets . . .
Round or Rectangular Teeth?

As a general guide, if the choice

of the tooth shape is open, remember.....

--- A round tooth form

will laterally guide the perforated material.

--- A round perforation form

is more economical to manufacture.

--- A rectangular tooth

is more suitable for heavier loads.

--- If dual perforations are desired, a rectangular tooth

allows for inaccuracies in the lateral spacing.

Material Selection

Material cost is usually less than 4% of the cost of any sprocket, but the proper choice is very
important to a successful application. A poor selection might result in premature tooth wear,
which could seriously affect performance and cause damage to the perforated material.

The primary factors affecting choice should be weight (inertia), wear resistance and corrosion
resistance.

Where weight or low inertia is a concern, aluminum is an excellent choice. The ability to plate
the surface with hard anodize, chrome or nickel offers greater wear and corrosion resistance.
Titanium is also a light weight material but is more costly to machine.

For improved wear resistance, a heat treatable alloy is preferred, although the high chrome/nickel
alloys have good wear resistance without heat treating. The most economical choice when good
wear resistance and tight tolerances are needed is 416 stainless steel heat treated to a surface
hardness of R ‘C’ 64. The heat treatment process used ensures very little distortion even in thin
cross section designs.

Corrosion can be prevented by choice of material or subsequent plating operations. It is usually

more economical to plate a low cost alloy as the high chrome stain resistant alloys are more costly
to machine. On ferrous alloys, electroless nickel plating to .001” or less gives the most uniform
thickness. Aluminum can be anodized or plated to improve its corrosion resistance.

Important Dimensional Considerations

Tooth Design Parameters

Round Teeth: The normal diameter for round teeth is .004/006 under
the perforation diameter. This is dependent however,
on the accuracy of the perforation spacing and the
amount of ‘wrap’ (angular engagement) of the material
on the sprocket. Consult LaVezzi engineers for specifics.

The tooth arc must be designed to avoid damaging the

perforation when engaging or disengaging. The radius is
dependent on the sprocket radius and is determined by
the involute curve generated by the perforation edge
as it leaves the sprocket tooth. LaVezzi engineers
will advise as to the optimum tooth arc.

Rectangular Teeth: The desire to control side-to-side (lateral) motion

or front-to-back motion (backlash) is normally the
controlling factor in the design of rectangular teeth.
Accuracy of the perforation size and spacing (pitch)
permitting, it is possible to fill the perforation allow-
ing only .0003”/.0006” clearance. Consideration must
be given to the radii in the corners of the perforation
when requiring a maximum tooth width (see VKF and
Posi-Trol Sprocket Tooth Designs). When this is not a
consideration, then a tooth width that adequately fills
the perforation across the driving face is sufficient.

The tooth arc is dependent on the sprocket diameter.

The involute curve generated by the perforation face as
it enters or leaves the sprocket tooth can be calculated
by LaVezzi engineers who will advise as to the best radius
and the point of radius.

Bore Sizing

To avoid camber or excessive wear to the perforated material, it is mandatory

that a proper fit be made between the sprocket bore and the mounting shaft.
If the sprocket is held on with a set screw, the clearance between sprocket
and bore will translate into eccentricity. A .001” total bore tolerance is maximum,
with tighter tolerances dictated by need.

Diameter Considerations

The sprocket diameter is usually determined by the amount of wrap

(angular engagement) required or determined by the system design. The flexibility
of the perforated material may be a determining factor. Once an approximate size
is arrived at, the exact diameter is determined based on the material or film thickness.

Assuming the actual pitch diameter to be at the mid-point of the material thickness
when the belt is fully engaged around the sprocket, the sprocket diameter is
determined by the formula:

D = NP/π- T

Where: D = Sprocket Diameter

N = Number of Pitch Lengths
Around Sprocket Circumference
P = Perforation Pitch (Spacing)
π = 3.1416
T = Material Thickness
