How I Made a Difference as a Teacher

By Mr. Reymart T. Ada

Bayog Elem. School

Let’s do the name your teacher challenge. Do you still remember the
names of your teachers from elementary to college that thought and inspired you
to do your best? Or maybe the teacher who believe in you when the rest of the
world have turned against you? We should thank them for touching our lives
because they have numerous times and many ways of making difference once
in our life. And that I am so grateful and appreciative of them because they are
the reason why I become a teacher. Now I am a professional public school
teacher, I want to do for other students what many of my former teachers have
done for me. But how do I differ from them? I am a teacher of today who believes
that this is not just my profession but also my mission to fulfill with. My mission to
uplift the mindset of every learners and lead them to achieve their goals and
dreams to become lifelong learners.

I just remembered one of my former pupils, a 21year-old who are now in

Grade 11 at Bayog Senior High, he is Marpin Lapie. He said to me, “Sir, after my
Senior High School, I will take education course major in Araling Panlipunan.” Then
I asked him why? He just said that he missed my teachings and for him, Araling
Panlipunan is not boring when I am teaching them. And that is the reason why he
loves Araling Panlipunan. I became quiet and moved by his thoughts. In my six
years of teaching in public and 2 years in private, that was the first time I heard
from a pupil telling your impact and how you influence them.

Another pupil of mine once chatted me in Facebook last September 14,

2017, his name was Mark San Valentin. Thanking me for the good deeds I did to
him before. He was lost that time when he was schooling at Bayog Elementary
School because of the family problem he was facing. He came to school once in
a blue moon. He was really smart. His favorite subject was Mathematics and had
been an athletic boy. He sometimes bullied his classmates. He even intended to
drop. But because of the Project ROPE of the school, I let him to come to school
once a week just to get his modules so he would not fail and he passed the Grade
VI. He transferred to Salvacion Busuanga, Palawan to continue his Grade Seven
at that time he chatted me. He was saying that he was one of the participants in
MTAP in their district and an athlete of taekwondo. I told him that I am happy and
proud of what he become and continue what he loves to do.

These stories from my former pupils are my inspirations to become good,

better, and the best teacher. I believe as a teacher, we should show our pupils
that they are unique individuals and each of them can be whatever they want
to be and not just good at what they do, they can be the best. Let’s correct their
mindset that they can really learn if they are eager to learn and take this
opportunity to find ways in making them feel comfortable when they are in school
through interesting school works and the use of diverse strategies.

Building relationship with your pupils. I, myself is easily attached to my

pupils. Their problem is actually my problem. I want them to feel that aside from
their home, there is a school where there is a kuya or a tatay who will always ready
to give them advice and guide them in dealing with different problems in life.

As Michelle Obama once said, “Success isn’t about how much money you
make; it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” We teachers should
continue to inspire our pupils, touch their lives as we are their parents that will lead
them in facing this ever-changing world.
