Background of the study

Educational allowance is an essential to every student. This is where they get the funds that

are used to buy their academic needs. It includes their textbooks, materials in writing notes,

class funds, and school projects. Usually, their allowance came from their parents. Regardless of

how much their children’s allowance has, the Parents usually manage their children’s allowance

and they will only lend money to their children whenever they ask. Some parents just give their

children’s monthly allowance to their children especially those who are in a right age giving them

trust, so that their children will know how to handle their allowance.

Students nowadays especially who are financially stable, gives a lot of money for the budget

of their school project. They also buy the materials that has a good quality or a branded product

regardless of the price. They don’t review the materials used and they just buy what they

needed and what they want. There are many underrated products that has the same quality of

the branded products or even better than the branded products but because it is underrated,

students will still choose the branded products. They believe that giving more money shall

increase the chances of attaining high marks by having a creative and high-quality project and

less hassle at the same time. It is true that having expensive materials shall increase the chance

of attaining high marks but still it is impractical because there are several ways of increasing the

chances of high marks by using less expensive or cheap products. Unknowingly their impractical

decisions, they are wondering why their parents are getting stingy or their monthly allowance

are getting depleted early. Usually, the students use their educational allowance mostly on their

school projects because a project uses different materials in order to be made. That is why the

researchers conducted this research entitled “The effects of having excessive amount of money

for school projects of grade 8 learners”. It shall help the students to be aware of how much they
give for a school project and to be aware of the consequences of giving excessive amounts. It

shall be also making them aware what materials they use and to avoid always spending money

on branded materials.

The research shall be conducted on the grade 8 learners because it is the stage where

the learners already adapted to the high school environment rather than the grade 7 learners,

where they are just starting to adapt to the environment. Grade 8 learners, who usually has the

age of 13-14 should have the mentality of awareness in financial allowance event to the smallest

extent. In prior to that, they should know the consequence of shortage of allowance. Overall,

that is the reasons why the researchers conducted this research on grade 8 learners.

One of the thrusts of this research is to help the learners to develop or to enhance their

practical decision in lending money and buying materials for their school projects. With that, the

learners shall be aware on what materials they shall choose. After that, the first thing that will

happen, the students shall save more money and can be used for their next project. After

applying this mentality, the students will not only be practical in their school projects, but they

will start to be practical in their everyday life decisions. It involves to be practical in choosing the

person to be with, what to wear, what they want to be, and what type of life they want to have.

With their enhanced practical decisions, they also help our country to be progressive.

They help our country’s economy in simple ways. For instance, with them saving more money in

choosing underrated products, they help their parents to save more money, making them to

have more money in other expenses, making the lives of their family more convenient. The

concept of a country being more efficient, is to have more convenient families. When they

became the adults in the future, they shall spread their practical mentality to their children and

younger ones, resulting to continue their mentality over generations.


On that matter, the researchers got more curious and want to continue in helping the

grade 8 students at their allowance and teaching them to give the exact amount of money for

their school project. In prior to that, the researchers want to help our country’s poor economic

status so by starting at the grade 8 by making them aware, they can rise every Filipino’s financial

status even to the smallest extent.
