PART 1 – GENERAL
1.01 DESCRIPTION:
A. Provide a plant Page/Party distributed amplifier system with power supplies, signal
amplifiers, sound reproducers, signal generators, back boxes, accessories, including
system wiring, and other appurtenances for a fully functional system.
B. The Page/Party System shall interface with the facility Telephone System as specified in
Section 16765.
C. The Page/Party System shall interface with facility Utility Control Instrumentation
System – Section 13300.
B. Local Codes
A. Provide facilities for both page and common-talking party line operation at various
locations throughout the plant with the capability of two-way conversations between
stations using telephone type handsets. Confirm that handsets perform in areas of high
ambient noise without the use of acoustical enclosures or booths.

B. Provide each station with the capability of switching between the page line and
common-talking party lines.
C. Confirm that page channel broadcasts over all system speakers. To prevent acoustic
coupling, automatically mute the speaker adjacent to the handset station when the
handset is removed from its associated cradle and the page channel is selected.
E. Provide capability of telephone connection into the Page/Party system. The telephone
system shall be supplied under Section 16765.
H. Equipment located in finished rooms shall be flush mounted and provided with
concealed raceways.
1.05 SUBMITTALS:
A. Shop Drawings: Submit the following in accordance with Section 01300 and as
specified herein.
2. Spare Parts Data: As a part of the shop drawing submittal, provide a list of
recommended spare parts for the material and equipment to be provided,
including current unit prices and source of supply (indicate which supplies are
furnished at no extra cost with purchase of equipment) and in accordance with
Section 01600.
D. Tags: Tags with stamped identification number to be furnished for keys and locks and
all spare parts furnished for the Authority’s stock to maintain the system. Furnish and
install tags to identify cable and conduit runs, and wiring circuits on the installed
system.
F. Accessibility: Provide enclosures with gutter space to allow clearance between the
enclosure and live parts of the panel equipment. If more than one modular unit is
required to form a control panel, provide the units installed in a single cabinet to
accommodate all units, and allow gutter space for interconnections of panels and field
wires.
G. Confirm that conduit size and wire quantity, size, and type can be used for the
equipment supplied. Review the installation of each type of device with the equipment
supplier prior to installation.

B. Protect all equipment placed into storage from the weather, humidity and temperature
variations, dirt, dust, and other contaminants.
1.08 SERVICE:
A. The equipment manufacturer shall have trained, full-time employees who are capable of
performing testing, inspecting, repair, and maintenance services.
3. Demonstrate signal input from panel, microphone and telephone systems with
speaker power output adjusted for paging coverage without hum or feedback.
1.10 QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Each item of the Page/Party system such as stations, speakers, central cabinet shall be
listed as a product of a single Page/Party system manufacturer under the appropriate
category by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc. (U.L.), or Factory Mutual Standards
B. The equipment furnished under this Section shall be provided by a manufacturer with
two installations similar in size, complexity, installed and operating for two years. The
manufacturer shall furnish a list with the names of similar facilities, owner, contact
name and telephone numbers.

A. Provide equipment for both page and common-talking party line operation at locations
throughout the system as indicated. Two way conversations shall take place between
stations using telephone type handsets. Provide handsets that perform in areas of high
ambient noise (110 dB) without the use of acoustical enclosures or booths.
B. Broadcast page channel speech over all system speakers in each zone. To prevent
acoustic coupling, automatically mute the speaker(s) adjacent to the handset station
when the handset is removed from its associated cradle and the page channel is
selected.
C. Each station shall be capable of switching between the page line and five common-
talking party lines.
D. Page channel shall broadcast speech over all system speakers. To prevent acoustic
coupling, the speakers adjacent to the handset station shall be automatically muted
when the handset is removed from its associate cradle and the page channel is selected.
F. The system shall also be capable of interfacing to the telephone system. It shall contain
the following components:
2.04 ENCLOSURES:
C. For hazardous areas, Class I, Division I, Groups C and D, and Class I, Division II,
provide a weatherproof and explosionproof surface mounted station; amplifier
enclosure shall be NEMA 7 and overall weatherpoof enclosure shall be NEMA 4X
non-metallic, including hinged door with cam-style latch. Unit shall contain a selector
switch for five party lines, and unit shall be for use and tested by UL or FM.
A. Provide amplifier built into the handset to operate from 220 VAC, 50 Hz. The unit
shall operate in ambient temperatures from –30 deg. C to +70 deg. C (-22 deg. F to
+158 deg. F).
B. Provide handset with dynamic noise canceling microphone. The handset amplifier
section shall have an output level of 1.5 Vrms (nominal) into a 33 Ohm load. There
shall be a 55 dB nominal voltage gain and automatic gain control circuit, and a
frequency response of 250 to 4000 Hz, +1.5 dB. Distortion shall be no greater than
1.5% maximum THD at 1000 Hz. The input impedance shall be 100 Ohms (nominal)
at 1000 Hz. The receiver volume, and sidetone controls shall be adjustable.
C. Provide speaker amplifier section integral to the handset enclosure with a push-pull,
Class B, 12 Watt output at nominal 220VAC, with taps for 8 to 16 Ohm voice coils.
There shall be 20 dB maximum voltage gain into an 8 Ohm load, and a frequency
response of 250 to 4000 Hz + 1.5 dB. The distortion shall be no greater than 1%
maximum THD at 12 Watts and 1000 Hz, with a full load to no load regulation of a 1
dB maximum rise, and an input impedance of 50,000 Ohms (nominal). The volume
control shall be concealed and adjustable.
D. Each handset/speaker amplifier shall have an auxiliary jack for headsets and a
receptacle to mate with plug-in handset/speaker amplifier.
A. Provide wall mounted indoor weatherproof speakers as indicated, that will work with
the Page/Party system. Speaker shall be direct-radiating horn with a built-in driver.
Frequency response shall be 450 Hz to 3000 Hz +/-5dB, and dispersion shall be 90 deg.
Nominal. Horn assembly shall be U.V. resistant, weatherpoof, high-impact, glass
reinforced polyester. Sound pressure level shall be 117dB, 4 ft. on Axis at 16 watt
rated input. Voice coil impedance shall be 8 ohms. Power handling capacity shall be
16 watts rms. Horn shall be equipped with 3/4-in. conduit entries and a terminal block
for wire termination.
B. Provide wall mounted outdoor speakers as indicated that will work with Page/Party
system. Speaker shall be constant directivity horn with speaker and driver mounting
assembly. Frequency response shall be 450 Hz to 8,000 Hz +/-5 dB, and dispersion
angle of 120 deg. Horizontal and 60 deg. Vertical. Horn shall be constructed of high-
impacted glass-reinforced polyester and corrosion-resistant hardware and mounting
bracket. Sound pressure level shall be 119 dB at 12 watts. Provide the drivers
matched to the speaker and enclosure in a housing. Provide explosion proof speakers
where indicated on the drawings.
C. Provide flush mounted ceiling speakers as indicated for use with Page/Party system,
with an enclosure, baffle and related mounting hardware. Provide unit with a built-in
volume control, a brushed aluminum speaker grill and with a 7 watt input.
A. Provide desk-top station consisting of handset and integral 12 watt amplifier with
pushbutton page switch. Operate station on 220 volts ac, single phase, 50 hertz power.
The page button to be momentary, single action type and shall be built into the handset
for one handed operation. Provide a switch for selection of up to five (5) party lines.
The enclosure shall be rated for use in an office environment. The speaker shall form
an integral unit. All connections to the station to be in an eight (8) foot multiconductor
which plugs into the bottom of the amplifier enclosure. The opposite end of the cable
to terminated in a junction box with terminal strips for field wire terminations.
A. Provide an all-page assembly in the cabinet. All-page assembly shall contain all page
line balancing and page terminals. The page line from each zone shall terminate in this
cabinet.
C. Provide remote control of loudspeaker volume from control unit. This activates the
receiver in Page/Party station amplifiers to control volume at outdoor speakers.
D. Furnish and install a tone/speech generator allowing plant-wide alarms, warning tones
and pre-record announcements over the Page/Party System. The Tone/Speech
Generator shall have a library of 42 tones stored in memory. The Tone/Speech
Generator shall prioritize seven tones and seven speech messages. A potentiometer
located in the Tone/Speech Generator shall have the capability to adjust the tone of the
volume level.
2.09 CABLES:
A. Provide all cables for the Page/Party system. All cables to be color coded to
manufacturers terminal strips and shielded for installation underground.
A. Terminal boxes shall be provided. Terminal boxes shall be NEMA 4X or NEMA 4X/7
enclosures of fiberglass reinforced polyester material.
A. Provide a tone generator system to send alarms or warning tones over the plant paging
system. System shall be capable of generating up to seven tones and/or speech
messages with programmable time duration of tones. Tone generator system shall be
activated from signal from Facility Control Instrumentation System – Section 13300.
Provide a mute feature which will temporarily reduce the volume of a tone during
speech messages and/or voice pager. System shall operate on 220 volts AC, single
phase, 50 hertz power. Tone generator shall be mounted within control cabinet.
B. Provide exterior, weatherproof single channel intercom with hands-free two way
talk/listen capability. Faceplate and enclosure to be Type 316 stainless steel, heavy
duty, and vandal resistant.
B. This unit shall have inputs for remote day/night switching, call transfer and termination.
C. This unit shall allow designated Page/Party users access to outside phone lines with
plant operator assistance.
A. Three sets of special tools for the maintenance of the equipment to be provided.

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Provide and install the system as specified and indicated, and in accordance with all
applicable codes and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
B. Install stations and amplifiers as indicated. Connect the stations and amplifiers to their
speakers as indicated.
C. Provide electrical safety barriers and conduit seals whenever communication passes
from a non-hazardous to hazardous zones or areas. The barrier shall prevent unwanted
voltage currents from reaching the hazardous atmosphere.
D. Communication cable shall be installed throughout the plant in Rigid Steel Conduct. No
crosstalk, interference or oscillation shall occur.
E. Connect plant and field wiring in terminal boxes to form complete branches within the
system as indicated. Connect to terminals within central cabinet as indicated to provide
complete zones.
G. Install amplifier with volume level control and terminate wires consistent with all wiring
as required.
H. Clean all dirt and debris from the inside and outside of the Page/Party system
equipment after completion of the installation.
I. Equipment shall be installed plumb and square and shall be ventilated and anchored.
J. Conductor terminations at screw terminals shall be installed with hooked, spade lugs.
Shielding shall be continuous and shall be grounded at the amplifier which shall be
frame grounded. Wiring shall be cabled within enclosures and banded to terminals.
K. Install Page/Party system and speaker cables in conduit. Rod and swab out ducts prior
to installing cable.
M. Do not splice where cable lengths are commercially manufactured and available.
Provide put-up lengths on cable reels to make termination-to-termination runs without
splices. Where splices are unavoidable, and upon further review by the Authority,
provide watertight splices and provide mechanical protection equal to the cable jacket,
or better.
N. Use installation tools and materials approved by the raceway system and cable
manufacturers.
3.02 WIRING:
A. Wiring for the Page/Party system shall be of the type, number of conductors, and size
as recommended by the Page/Party system vendor.
A. Each station shall be tested for operation. Test the muting of adjacent speakers
connected to the station when the “page pressbar” is depressed to verify there is no
feedback. Test each station with an adjacent station to verify continuity of page line,
party line and speaker connectivity.
C. Test operation of the PBX interface to verify connectivity to each station party line and
each indoor speaker in the zone.
D. The system test shall be witnessed by the CM/CS and the Owner. The Contractor to
notify the CM/CS 10 days in advance of the tests. All test results to be documented
and assigned and certified report given to the CM/CS by the equipment Supplier that
the system is in working order and in accordance with the specifications.
3.04 TRAINING:
A. Within the first 30 days from system start-up the equipment Supplier shall provide
40 hours of system operations and maintenance training at the Project site to the
Owner. This training shall be conducted during business hours at a date and time of
mutual convenience.
