PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This report was written in April 2019 after a 90 Days internship at Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd.
This internship project is a part of 5 – year bachelor’s degree programme under Mumbai
University, which is to be undertaken during semester VIII of our academic curriculum.

The internship programme not only helped me gain a lot of knowledge but importantly, I had
a great chance to sharpen my skills in a professional working environment. I have learnt
communication skills that I have been trained and practiced through giving presentations,
discussing with the supervisors, experts in the field and other staff within and outside of the
office. I have worked on various projects from designing, modelling, presentations which help
me improve my software skills, as well as gave me confidence in using the same.

I am very appreciated to Ar. Omkar Damle (Assoc. Architect), Ar. Amogh Taware (Jr.
Architect), Ar. Nandini Borkar (Jr. Architect) & Mr. Rahul Halde who gave me guidance into
the internship programme. A special thanks to Ar. Makarand Toraskar (Chief Architect), for
taking special care, and looking into matters personally and being a support during and after
internship as well. Throughout the internship I have also learnt about how an office works its
management and efficient operations, I am thankful to Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd. For helping
me develop academically, professionally and socially.

AIM

The aim of this report is to summarize the work experience as an intern trainee and scrutinize
the gathered information.

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of the report are as follows: -

 To understand the nature of Design Firm.

 To understand the nature of work done as a part of professional training.
 To develop skills in communication, technology (software use), reasoning.
 To understand working as a team on a professional front.
 To gain work experience of working in a professional work environment.
 To gain practical - on field knowledge from the experienced - senior architects,
professionals, experts from field via discussions and presentations.
 To meet new people from field and establish a network of professional contacts,
mentors and references.
 To understand work ethics, adaptability skills, time management and practice them.

INTRODUCTION

Critical thinking and innovation are two key components in creative architectural design. Apart
from studio experience gained during the college, the best way to acquire skills and experience
is to work alongside accomplished designers in an actual work environment. Effective
internships a useful means for translating what is learnt in the academic setting to actual work
situation, thereby, deceloping sharper design sense and skills.

I started my internship on 11th November 2018 at Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd. During the
internship I got to practice as a full-fledged member of the team, dealing with clients, designing,
drawing, joining meeting with clients, sub-contractors and visiting sites before, during and after
construction. I worked on various projects, independently, also assisted junior and senior
architects. Some of the projects I worked on are now in the que for the final approval from the
Thane Municipal Corporation, while some in approval from clients, society. I got to create
presentations for society meetings, also had an opportunity for attending seminar series (Ai
Talks) which was a great experience, an eye opener on the present situation of the Mumbai city
redevelopment and cluster development.

The goal of the internship was to gain knowledge within the industry of Architecture and
Construction and to put into practice the theories and knowledge learned from our education.
The report explains what was learned throughout the internship programme, regarding Role of
Architect in the practical field, designing, study environment, site execution, etc.

ACCOUNT OF INTERNSHIP
COMPANY ANALYSIS

"Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd." (Group Company of M/s. Makarand Toraskar &
Associates) is a firm, headed by Ar. Makarand Toraskar, having association with well
experienced professionals in related fields, which is committed to excellence in custom
architecture and design for residential, cultural, corporate and academic buildings. Located in
Thane city, the firm combine rigorous design with construction management experience, a
combination that leads to a distinctive design process and end products that are aesthetically
and intellectually rigorous as well as financially informed.

The firm deals with many different projects from large scale residential complexes to individual
plot development, commercial projects, redevelopment projects, bungalows, interior projects,
consultancy and liasoning. A seminar series ‘AiTalks’ an initiative by the firm, calling the
experts and discussing the problems - solutions which can be offered with the goal of awareness
and better understanding of the current and future scenario. The firm currently has a staff of 18
people with 4 interns. The whole atmosphere of the office is warm and joyful.

WORKS PERFORMED DURING INTERNSHIP

During the period of internship, I performed various tasks and was involved with many
different projects. Sometimes I was given larger tasks on projects and a lot of time would be
spent on it. Then there were many varied tasks on different projects which would take
sometimes an hour and sometimes a day or two. I worked mostly designing - creating plans,
sections, elevation and detailing. Sometimes working in drawings on concept stage for the
client, in the development design stage and making drawings for contractors for executing the
design on site.

OVERALL TASK AND PRACTICES

1. Design Sketch, AutoCAD Drawing, Sketch Up 3D Modelling.
2. Comment, Modification and amendments of architectural drawings.
3. Prepare presentation drawings, slides for clients, contractors.
4. Following By-Laws, Setbacks and CFO norms.
5. Participate in Client-Consultant Meeting.
6. Understanding different requirements in terms of size and number of flats, types, etc.
7. Rendering of models, understanding presentation format and style
8. Aware of standard form of construction.
9. Aware of different Local Authorities.
10. Aware of different site conditions during site visits and inspection.
11. Preparing for ‘AiTalk’ – management team, photography team.
12. Discussing with colleagues in terms of DD and Thesis (How, What, Why – 5th Year)

Designing for redevelopment was the main part of all the projects, other being a commercial
building, Working Drawings, Details. The design process of getting most out of the smallest
part has helped me to develop a different mindset all together also without compromising with
the aesthetics of the building. Also, I had an opportunity to work on CFO drawings, and having
a personal guidance of chief architect, with how rules are important when it comes to CFO and
panic situations and how they should never be compromised.

My designs for Sukhdev Gholap site, Patwardhan Wada site and Prathana Soc. Site have been
finalised by office and client, the whole office appreciated for my work and design process and
understanding.

Working on large scale projects and making presentation for clients, like in case of MHADA
Shivai Nagar redevelopment, I consider myself lucky to have got an opportunity to work on
such a project. Making plans, 3D renders and getting a chance to understand the whole case up
close and personal, helped me understand how the whole team works under time constraints
and pressure.

MESCO School was also one of such projects which gave an opportunity to work on detailing
for the aesthetic part of the building. Dealing with contractors as making them understand the
detailing.

The project of Sukhdev Gholap Site gave me a chance to work on Working Drawings from
scratch and taking part on site as well helped me understand how a drawing is executed on site
and how people are to be managed.

Designing of compacts spaces and thinking not only from the point of view of builder but also
keeping in mind the aesthetics and the quality of life within those spaces, was an important
lesson learned in office. The projects of Pathwardhan Wada, Prathana Society, Shekh Dawale,
gave me the experience of space designing.

The firm also gave me understanding of road lines, DP Sheets, Google Maps, Survey Sketches,
about how to understand them and interpret them for the process of attaining site drawings and
staring with design process.

My raw knowledge from college surely helped in coping up with the work which was assigned
to me. Working in the environment has helped me nurture the knowledge and gain a lot of new
concepts and thought processes. Site-visits have helped me on tackling with the contractors
and how to lead on site and getting things done. Sites have been an awesome experience for
seeing what we draw on cad to see it being constructed as a sanctioned work on site is a
pleasure.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Upon completion of this internship programme, I can now identify and recall the authorities,
procedures and requirements such as DCR, DCPR, CFO norms, Municipal Drawings. Other
than that, I have also gained a deeper understanding on planning issues and effects of cost on
a buildings design, compliances with the Building By-Laws and Norms set out by the
governing bodies, in several client meetings. I was the part of designing team of various
projects of different types (Resi., Comm., Mixed), a few designs were finalized, the whole
process of reviewing designs by superiors, and discussion about how the design can be refined
were carried out. Through these comments I was brought to notice how the architectural
aesthetics go with the added consideration in mind.

Finally, I have also developed an appreciation toward team-work in the office environment.
The working industry has indeed given me a lesson that unity and excellent time management
is the definite path to success in a project.

5th Year (Sem. 9, Sem. 10)

Overall experience during the internship is surely going to help in developing my DD and
Thesis folio. Thinking practically and logically, finding solutions with intuitive design process,
financial thoughts and how aesthetically the whole project can be improved. Discussing about
topic with colleagues and with chief architect has given me a morale boost on looking forward
with facing the challenges of DD. Office also has promised to help me during my DD
progressive stages and have given me the permission to visit the firm even for the silliest of my
doubts. I am privileged to be getting this opportunity and thankful towards the firm.

CONCLUSION

In summary, during the last 4 months of my internship training in Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd.
Has provided me with a brief insight into the real world of architectural working industry. I
was truly an eye-opening experience as I was given the opportunity to explore new things and
was given exposure to architectural industry and working procedure. It has given me a
perspective towards architecture and an appreciation which I will always hold.

I now understand the importance and the responsibility of an architect as it is crucial to possess
patience, confidence, skills and knowledge in order to face challenging tasks and obstacles in
completing given tasks within a short duration of time.

Lastly, I would again like to thank Ambiaance Design Pvt. Ltd., Ar. Makarand Toraskar Sir
and all colleagues from office for their kind generosity in sharing their knowledge with me
about architecture and construction industry. It was an amazing experience to be able to intern
under such a prominent firm with the most dedicated teams.
