– Personal Statement Draft 2

The light streams from the desk lamp falling onto the drafting table where the architect attentively
contours joined pyramidal shapes that are soon going to form the Shimizu Mega-City Pyramid in
Tokyo Bay, Japan - a proposed arcology that challenges current technologies.

This will hopefully be me in around ten years, a successful graduate of the architecture programme
of your University, creative, at pace with a fast-changing world, environmentally conscious and
prepared to face the future’s sustainability challenges. This ambitious image of me is however
rooted in my pre-University life, where I find my motivation to pursue architecture.

Walking to school as a child I was fascinated by the stories Bucharest’s streets with their
architectural mélange told. Throughout the city, classical, neo-gothic and postmodern architecture
intertwined. I found the way these styles played against each other, while forming a unity, very
interesting and this developed my passion for architecture.

During my professional and academic experience, I have attained skills a successful architect needs:
creativity, communication, leadership and international cultural knowledge.

Throughout my academic experience I have prepared for an architecture education. On the


International Baccalaureate, I focused on Higher Level Mathematics to learn how to solve
challenging problems, on Physics to understand the laws of our universe, on Anthropology to
appreciate cultural change and on Visual Arts to apply my creativity. My dedication to the arts is
reflected in my participation with artwork at all my secondary schools’ exhibitions. For example, in
the past two years I presented paintings at the “Royal Roads University Exhibition” in Canada.

In addition to academic training, I have also approached architecture hands-on and volunteered with
Habitat for Humanity Romania to build homes for families in need. I assisted a senior architect in
designing Habitat houses and closely worked with engineers in adapting the designs to a real
context. I also participated in the actual construction, leading three teams of volunteers who built a
house (dug a foundation, poured concrete, framed walls, did woodwork). At the end of the month,
Habitat for Humanity offered me a Certificate of Appreciation for my outstanding diligence on the
construction site.

Winning the “Outstanding Student Prize for Achievement in Architecture” from Oxbridge Academic
Programmes “L’Académie de Paris” for my project on the Opéra Garnier, represented a reward of
my passion for architecture. For this project, I investigated the relationship between the interior to
the exterior and the exterior to the surroundings.

In a globalized world, architects from various cultures need to exchange knowledge and ideas. In the
European Youth Parliament I improved my communication skills by debating current issues with
fellow students from all over Europe. My ability to speak English, German, French and Spanish
fluently has helped me to adapt at Pearson United World College of the Pacific in Canada, a
prestigious international high-school. Having won a full scholarship to study in English alongside
students from over 100 different countries, I feel privileged to have lived in a world in miniature for
two years.

This school-year I find myself embarking on a new adventure in Paris at the Malaquais Architecture
School. I intend to make use of the opportunities the city holds for me: art galleries, museums,
operas, theatres, street art and a large architectural patrimony.

My dream is to study architecture in Britain, an environment which is more open to different


nationalities, experimentation and offers many educational resources. In addition, the U.K.’s
architecture, ranging from Roman to 21st century structures, is a laboratory I can practice in. I am
certain a British education will allow me to become an architect of the future, prepared to reinvent
and redesign modern life in an intelligent and responsible manner.
