Computer Science.
• On your script, please include in the following order, the course code with its Group #, i.e. MATH 1150
– Group 1, assignment #, your name, your ID #.
• Please ensure that you submit your script in the correct MATH 1150 box for Group 1.

1. Find the values of the constants such that the following function is continuous ∀x ∈ ℜ , (Real numbers):

 x 2 if x ≤ −2

g(x ) =  ax + b if − 2 < x < 2 , a and b are constants
 2x − 6 if x ≥ 2

 x + 1, x < −1

2. Find the points of discontinuity for f (x ) =  x 2 , − 1 ≤ x ≤ 1
 1 − x, x > 1

3. Using the Intermediate Value Theorem, show that:

(i) 3x 3 − 7x 2 + 5x − 8 = 0 has a root between 1 and 3.
(ii) If two functions, f and g, are both continuous on [0,1], with f(0) = 1 , f(1) = −1 , g(0) = −1 &
g(1) = 1 , then ∃ at least one point c in [0,1] where f(c) = g(c).

4. If g(x) + 5 < 3(4 − x) 2 , find lim g(x ) .

x→ 4
 1
 x sin  
5. Determine if the function f (x ) is continuous at x = 0 where, f (x ) =   x , x ≠ 0
 0, x = 0

6. Evaluate the following limits without using differential calculus:

sin x sin 3 x cos 3x

x→ 0 3x x → 0 4x 3 x→
π cos x
