 Traits & Behavior
Behaviour: If you choose to purchase only
one, be prepared to give it a lot of attention or
it will become bored, mischievous and quite
troublesome. If you don't have the time to
spend with your love bird, then buy it a mate
keeping in mind that the affection that would
have been for you will now be focused on the
partner.
Handling: Love birds are not talking parrots
though they can be quite vocal. They are also
not that cuddly though this varies from bird to
bird as love birds are one species with very
strong individual personalities.
Compatibility: They cannot be housed with any
other species of bird as they can be aggressive
and even kill other birds.
Things to remember
Toys: MUST be sturdy enough to withstand their
strong beak, large enough to keep toes from being
caught and changed out frequently so your bird does
not get bored.
Safety & Cleanliness: Keep your pet’s home clean
and wash your hands before and after handling your
pet or cleaning their home.
Infants, young children, pregnant women, people
with compromised immune systems, and the infirm
or elderly are at a greater risk of infections and
should use caution when in contact with the pet or its
habitat.

Nutrition
Staple diet: Choose a fortified love bird
seed diet as the mainstay of your
lovebird’s diet. Ask our pet experts what
food best suits your bird’s needs.
Fruits & vegetables: Treat your love bird
to chopped apples (no seeds), broccoli,
carrots, Romaine lettuce, oranges, banana,
strawberries, melon and blueberries twice
a week.
Treats sticks: Sunflowers seeds, egg
biscuit and honey sticks are all enjoyed by
love birds.
Water: Change and fill your love bird’s
water dish with clean water every day.
*Remember that fresh food items require their
own dish and should be removed from the
habitat after four hours to avoid spoilage.

Love birds are a long living, energy-filled
small parrot. They require constant
handling to remain tame and well behaved
and need bird toys and other bird cage
accessories to keep these intelligent birds
from becoming bored.
Habitat
Housing: Purchase the largest cage you
can afford, keep in mind that the cage
should be wide enough for the bird to
stretch out both wings and not touch the
sides.
Cage placement: Place the cage in an
area that is away from doors of air
conditioning vents. A window view
would be desirable but make sure your
lovebird isn’t in direct sunlight! You
wouldn’t want him to overheat/
Toys: Bells, ladders, swings and mirrors
are awesome toys for lovebirds. Many
parakeet toys are unsafe for small
parrots. Brittle plastic can injure your
strong-beaked bird.
Health
Signs of a healthy love bird:
Clean, bright eyes and nares
Tightly held feathers
Inquisitive behavior
Eats and drinks normally
Well-formed droppings with no diarrhea
