NIMASA Certificate of Competency structure is as follows:
 STCW officers (operational & management) grade of certificates
 Master Unlimited – II/2
 Master >3000GT near coastal voyage – II/2
 Master <3000GT near coastal voyage – II/2
 Master <500GT near coastal voyage – II/3
 Chief Mate Unlimited – II/2
 Chief mate >3000GT near costal voyage – II/2
 Chief mate <3000GT near coastal voyage – II/2
 Chief mate <500GT near coastal voyage – II/3
 Officer in charge of navigational watch, unlimited – II/1
 Officer in charge of navigation near coastal voyage – II/1
 Chief engineer unlimited – III/2
 Chief engineer >3000kw near coastal Voyage – III/2
 Chief engineer <3000kw near coastal Voyage – III/3
 Second engineer unlimited - III/2
 Second engineer >3000kw near coastal voyage – III/2

STCW officers (operation & management ) CoC examinations
The examinations leading to Certification in accordance with the provisions of the
International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping
for Seafarers 1978 as amended (STCW) is conducted at the end of preparatory classes
conducted at Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), ORON.

All candidates for the examination must meet the minimum requirement as provided
in the Convention.
There are two different entry levels for the career as follows:
 Seafarers with approved education & training (Nautical Science / Marine
Engineering) from NIMASA approved Maritime training Institute (see attached
list of approved training institutes)
 Seafarers with no approved maritime education background (nautical science /
marine engineering).

Candidates are to Fill the “application form” for assessment for eligibility to sit for
“STCW officers’ Certificate of Competency (COC) ” and submit to the Director Maritime
Safety and Seafarers Standard Department.

Ratings & Non-conventional CoC/CoP examination:


The examinations leading to Certification as Ratings in accordance with STCW’78 as
amended and crew on non- conventional vessels are conducted at the following District
offices:

Candidates are to fill “application form” for STCW ratings COP and / or the non-
Conventional Certificates of Competency examinations . The filled forms are to be
submitted to the NIMASA District Surveyors office (at the address provided above).
