Do’s and Don’ts in the Science Laboratory

First of all before we perform our experiment, we must do wear eye protection, to
prevent eye contact to a chemical, especially if there is an instances of glass break, our
eye will be protected from any piece of glass that would possibly splash to our eyes,
next do practice fire safety, so it was discussed previously, it is important to perform
those fire safety tips not only performing it, but knowing its importance of why we must
perform those actions. Next, do handle glassware safely, especially if there is any
toxic substances on it, we must be responsible in all things that we do, we must handle
things carefully, and we must pay attention in our fragile materials, like test tubes,
graduated cylinder, beaker, and etc. Do keep notes, not only we keep notes to our
lessons, like what is the definition of this term, but we must also keep notes processes
presents before performing an experiment, we must know first its processes for us to be
guided, like we need steps in how to mix those chemicals, to prevent violent chemical
reactions, in short, the experiment would be useless if you perform it without any
knowing its processes. Do wear gloves, to prevent chemicals contact to our skin,
especially corrosive chemicals that can damage living tissue. Do wear closed – toed
shoes, it is prohibited to wear a slipper during experiment with the chemicals, it is
because there will be an instances of spilling of chemicals or breaking a glass inside of
laboratory, and wearing a slipper would be more risky. Do practice electrical safety
why? It is because there will be a instances that we use electric equipment, and if we
misuse it there could be possible electric shock or short circuit that leads to serious
injury. Don’t eat and drink in the lab, because there could be high risk of
contamination, there could be chemicals on the table, or in the air that can harm you,
you could spill your foods or drinks to your experiment that can cause mess, and lastly
you could get sick. Don’t use excessive force, some glassware in the lab requires
connecting tubes, it means of don’t use excessive force is that, we must not force to
connect if it is not compatible to prevent breakage. Don’t leave mess, we must be
responsible in our working area that when we leave we must clean it as an act of
politeness and values, not only work area, but also the equipment’s or materials that
we’ve use.
Laboratory Safety Equipment’s

What are the laboratory safety equipment’s, first is the eye protection equipment,
example like goggles, again to prevent serious injury to our eyes, body protection, like
lab gowns, lab gowns protects our both arms, upper to torso, to prevent hazardous
chemicals direct contacts, and according to west lab, lab gown is 35/65 polycotton
means 35% polyster and 65% cotton that can be as semi fire retardant and also can be
fast removal during emergencies. Chemical storage equipment, we need to store
chemicals in a proper way, like we store alphabetically, categorize hazardous
substances for us to be aware, and also to separate substances example, separating
acids base from flammable, and also to put labels in each substances or using GHS
Pictograms which will be discussed later. Fume hoods, what is fume hoods, is a
ventilation system that provides protection against toxic, that its control the inhalation
exposures to hazardous substances and also protections against chemicals spill by
acting as a physical barrier. First – aid kits, in case of major injury. Spill control
system, this one is also part of the fume hoods.

Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Is a document that lists information relating to occupational safety and health for the use
off various substances. This is the way to know more or to gain more information to a
specific substances, example of information that the substances need to transport
carefully, store in a warm, or cold temperature, how hazard it is, and etc. MSDS,
contains health hazard, fire hazard, specific hazard, and reactivity, also MSDS
categorized the substances with its specific hazardous level.
