HIV AWARENESS AMONG SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

According to Department of Health (DOH) (2015) HIV or Human Immunodeficiency

Virus, is a vital infection that attacks and slowly destroys the immune system of the infected

person that leads to “immune deficiency”. It is progressive and may cause lack of body defense

to any or all forms of infection as well as people who don’t commonly infect man and may

additionally cause cancer condition.

During 1930’s in West Africa, the scientist assumed that the HIV at first start from a

virus that came from chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) and it is initially transmitted by humans

through shedding of blood of an animal. In the long run the virus start to circulate through Africa

and other parts of the world. (AVERT 2017)

There is no specific information about who are the first HIV victim in foreign country.

But in the Philippines, it was started in Spanish Colonial Period. In, addition, the virus continue

to spread first in Manila then Olongapo and afterwards in Angeles Pampanga which emerged in

an increasing of number of HIV victim in the Philippines. (USAID 1997)

According to United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS)Philippines, the

study shows that only 15% of young adults who’s age is 15-24 years old are only aware of HIV

prevention. But as HIV became serious illness in our beloved country the Government started to

SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

launched different campaigns. The first activist was Sarah Jane Salazar, she was the second HIV

victim in the Philippines after Dolzura Cortez.

Although the government official keeps releasing different campaigns on how to

somewhat stop the virus. The Virus continue to spread around our beloved country and keep

destroying the lives of our people. One of the Major point that contributed to the rapid spread of

the virus is the lack of awareness and participation of people in taking action against this

destructive virus. Therefore, this study aims to determine the awareness of SBSHS students in

terms of HIV cause, effect and prevention; and to provide recommendation for school HIV

education.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the awareness of Grade 11 students in Sapang Biabas Senior High

School regarding the HIV cause, effect and prevention it seeks to answer the following:

1. What is the perception of Grade 11 students regarding HIV?

2. How can you raise awareness about HIV among Grade 11 students?

3.What are your suggestions in improving the knowledge of students towards HIV?

4. As agrade 11 student. What is the importance of knowing the HIV?

Significance of the Study

This study about the research topic may help:

Students – this will give them a knowledge of what are the effects of HIV and it will

broaden their perception about HIV awareness

SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Parents -this will give them awareness on what are the significant role of having a

knowledge about HIV awareness in their children

Teachers –this will help them to be able to guide their students when it comes to this

sensitive topic.

Administrator of School- findings may serve as parameter in putting a symposium to

improve the knowledge of the students about HIV

Future researchers – may attain an thorough description having a similar topic of interest

beneath the study

Scope and Delimitation

The study is focused on the awareness of Grade 11 Senior High School Students of Sapang

Biabas Senior High School who are enrolled in the second semester of School Year (2018-

2019). This study limits its coverage on Grade 11 students of ABM, ICT, STEM,

AUTOMOTIVE and ELECTRONIC strand only. It is also centered in knowing the

awareness of the students regarding the said topic.

According to UNAIDS PHILIPPHNES, the global HIV epidemic states that the number of new

infections in the Philippines spread quickly in the past six (6) years from an estimated 4,300 in

2010 to an estimated 10,500 in 2016. The Philippines has become the country with the fastest

growing HIV epidemic in Asia and the Pacific, and has become one of eight countries that

account for more than 85% of new HIV infections in the region.

From the study of Jonathan llanes(2018) of Sunstar Philipphines a 34–year-old female with HIV-

Aids in Baguio City is calling the attention of Department of Education to intensify its education

and awareness against HIV/AID.During the Baguio World Aids Day celebration, Rose (not her

According to the report of Dharel Placido of ABS-CBN(2019),President Rodrigo Duterte has

signed a law that helps to strengthen government response to the unnumbered growing of Human

Immunodeficiency Virus - Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV-AIDS) cases in the

Philippines, Palace officials said Wednesday.Duterte’s former top aide Bong Go was first to

confirm that the President has signed Republic Act 11166 or the Philippine HIV and AIDS

Policy Act of 2018, which shall update and repeal the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control

Act of 1998.Under the law, a copy of which Malacañang released on Tuesday, the government is

mandated to establish programs and policies and adopt a multi-sectoral approach to prevent the

spread of HIV, and ensure access to HIV and AIDS-related services “by eliminating the climate

of stigma and discrimination” on patients.

Gulf News Philippines(2018) said that there is a mobile phone app which developed by Filipino

and foreign scientists aim to raise awareness on the risks of acquiring HIV/Aids by drawing them

into an engaging game.‘Battle of the Blood’ makes knowledge about the risks of acquiring

HIV/Aids more palatable to the younger generation and tries to remove the stigma that goes

along with the condition, developers from the University of the Philippines-Manila and UK

experts said.

From the report of Leilani Julio(2017),The Quezon City government on Wednesday boosted its

investment on health as it led the distribution of reference materials on sexually transmitted

infections (STIs) to the Department of Education (DepEd) QC School Division Office. The

learning materials is consisting of two sets, one for teachers and the other for students - teach

Grade 8 students about HIV/AIDS, its symptoms, how it is transmitted, and ways to prevent it, as

well as health services available, Republic Act No. 8504 on measures to prevent and control

HIV/AIDS, and the HIV situation in the Philippines.

Paul John A.Vesagas said that 94 percent of surveyed Filipino women have heard of AIDS, only

53 percent knows the two major methods for prevention and transmission of HIV: using

condoms and monogamous relationships. It is also best to observe that knowledge of preventive

methods is higher in urban areas compared to rural areas and such knowledge seems to increase

parallel to education and wealth: the higher the educational achievement or the higher the

socioeconomic standing, the more likely the person knows how to prevent the dangerous HIV.

Aika Rey of Rappler(2017) said in her article advocates called to end the fear on human

immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as House of

Representatives agreed the Philippine HIV and AIDS Policy bill on Monday, December 4. With

a vote of 188-0, the proposed House Bill No. 6617 passed the 3rd and final reading. The measure

aims to prevent spread of HIV and AIDS.Advocates and those living with the virus brought to

Twitter their stories in a bid to end discrimination in the country, as many of those of who are

positive with HIV chose to remain anonymous.

U.S Embassy in the Philippines(2018),the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines joined with Better

Together, LoveYourself, UNAIDS, the City of Taguig, and other partners to support the first-

ever “Love Gala.” “The Love Gala: Stand Up for World AIDS Day 2017″ united partners in the

fight against HIV/AIDS and raised awareness of the devastating impact the disease has had in

Asia and the Pacific.Globally, an estimated 36.7 million people have HIV/AIDS and more than

35 million people have died from the disease, making it one of the most destructive and fastest

spreading disease in history. The Philippines has registered the Fastest Growing HIV/AIDS

epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region over the past 6 years, with a huge increase in the number of

new infections. As of August 2017,almost 47,000 Filipinos were infected with HIV and 2,300

Filipinos have died from the disease.

According to Kris Tanco(2017) A paper is prepared for the 2004 Annual Meeting of the

Population Association of America by Elmer Laguna from the University of the Philippines

Population Institute gives us view on the knowledge of Filipino youth on HIV/AIDS and its

impact on their decision to engage in many sexual practices. Laguna says the AIDS Risk

Reduction Model which states that being correctly informed on reproductive health is the starting

point from which one is able to make commitments in changing one’s risky behavior and

enacting solutions to perform low-risk behavior.Findings from the study revealed that awareness

of the existence of a disease known as HIV/AIDS is universal among the youth, but

misconceptions about the disease exist for a sizable proportion of the sector.Few people believes

that HIV/AIDS is a punishment from God for people who have sex outside marriage. A

significant proportion also mentioned that AIDS is curable, and more than half believe that only

persons with multiple sex partners are at risk of acquiring the virus. In 2016, the increase in HIV

cases among the youth is indicative that the level of knowledge of HIV/AIDS among the youth

still needs urgent attention.

Foreign Literature

Adam Felman (2018) says that Human infection virus (HIV) may be a virus that attacks immune

cells known as CD4 cells, that are a kind of T cell. These are white blood cells that move round

the body, detection faults and anomalies in cells similarly as infections. once HIV targets and

infiltrates these cells, it reduces the body's ability to combat different diseases. This will increase

the chance and impact of expedient infections and cancers. However, someone will carry HIV

while not experiencing symptoms for an extended time. HIV may be a womb-to-tomb infection.

However, receiving treatment and managing the sickness effectively will prevent HIV from

reaching a severe level and cut back the chance of someone passing on the virus.

According to AVERT in USA(2018). More than a million individuals reside with HIV within the

United states of America (USA); one in seven are unaware of their standing. The HIV epidemic

is driven by sexual contact and is heavily targeted among sure key populations, specifically gay

men who lie with men. African Americans are worse affected across all key population teams.

Despite condoms being wide offered, their use is falling, even among those that are at high risk

of HIV.Increasing levels of injecting drug use, coupled to an outbreak of opioid misuse, are

threatening the gains created on reducing HIV among those that use medicine. HIV-related

stigma remains an enormous barrier to preventing HIV and is coupled to a coffee level of

individuals testing for HIV, furthermore as poor adherence to treatment, notably among kids.

President Trump’s continued proposals to heavily scale back America’s fund on HIV cause a

major threat to the progress that has been created within the epidemic up to now, each

domestically and globally.

Based on the study of UNAIDS, The overwhelming majority of individuals living with HIV are

in low-and middle-income countries. In 2017, there have been 19.6 million individuals living

with HIV (53%) in Japan and Southern Africa, 6.1 million (16%) in western and Central African

Republic, 5.2 million (14%) in Asia and also the Pacific, and 2.2 million (6%) in Western and

Central Europe and North America. Despite advances in our scientific understanding of HIV and

its interference and treatment moreover as years of serious effort by the worldwide health

community and leading government and civil society organizations, too many people living with

HIV or in danger for HIV still don't have access to care and treatment, and there's still no cure.

However, effective treatment with antiretroviral medicine will management the virus in order

that individuals with HIV will relish healthy lives and cut back the danger of the transmission

virus to others. The HIV epidemic is not totally affects the health of people, it impacts

households, communities, and also the development and economic process of countries. several

of the countries hardest hit by HIV additionally suffer from different infectious diseases, food

insecurity, and different serious issues. Despite these challenges, there are successes and

promising signs.New international efforts are mounted to handle the epidemic, significantly

within the last decade. the quantity of individuals recently infected with HIV has declined over

the years. additionally, the quantity of individuals with HIV receiving treatment in resource-poor

countries has dramatically exaggerated within the past decade. Progress additionally has been

created in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV and keeping mothers alive.

From the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc,HIV stands for Human immunological

disorder Virus. It’s an endemic that breaks down your cells in your system (your body’s defense

against diseases that helps you keep healthy). once HIV damages your system, it’s easier to get

very sick and even die from infections that your body might commonly rebuff. About 1.1 million

individuals within the U.S. reside with HIV, and quite 38,000 new infections happen per annum.

the majority with HIV don’t have any symptoms for several years and feel totally fine, in order

that they won't even understand they need it. Once you've got HIV, the virus stays in your body

for keeps. There’s no cure for HIV, however medicines will facilitate your keep healthy.HIV

medication lowers or perhaps stops your possibilities of spreading the virus to others. Studies

show that exploitation HIV treatment as directed will lower the quantity of HIV in your blood

most that it'd not even show au courant a look at — once this happens, you can’t transmit HIV

through sex. Treatment is admittedly necessary (that’s why obtaining tested is thus important).

while not treatment, HIV will cause AIDS. However, with medication, individuals with HIV will

live long, healthy lives and stop the unfold of HIV to others.

From the work of AVERT in China(2018), China has created substantial progress in effort its

HIV epidemic. China’s HIV history has been something however steady, with national

negligence a crucial consider the unfold of HIV within the early 90’s. However, vital progress

within the last decade and enhanced national response have stemmed the epidemic across the

country further as increasing the standard of life for people living with HIV.The HIV epidemic in

China is essentially defined by low national prevalence at 0.037%, with sure regions having

higher and additional severe HIV prevalence rates.China is additionally long-faced with the

increasing challenge of providing additional targeted hindrance programs to key affected

populations like men United Nations agency love with men, those that inject medication and

youth. Treatment, care and support challenges prevail in China. In 2014 alone, 21,000 people

died from AIDS-related causes. The quantity of individuals living with HIV receiving treatment

has steady enhanced across the country. However, progress in reducing mother-to-child

transmission rates continues to be considered slow. Progress has additionally been slow in

addressing the high levels of stigma and discrimination folks living with HIV expertise across

the country. China has created substantial progress with regards to funding its HIV response as

ninety- nine of funding came from domestic sources in 2015.For this can be terribly encouraging

once considering the property and longevity of the many of the national HIV and AIDS

commitments. Despite these efforts, in Gregorian calendar month 2016 the Chinese Centre for

un-wellness management and hindrance (CCDC) rumored 96,000 new HIV cases within the 1st

9 months of that year. This suggests the quantity of recent cases in 2016 is probably going to

exceed a hundred and 15,000, the quantity of recent cases recorded in 2015.

According to New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF), Consistent with previous findings, sexual

transmission accounts for the overwhelming majority of recent HIV diagnoses in New Zealand.

Gay and bisexual men stay the population cluster most in danger of HIV. There has been a

pointy increase in HIV transmission in New Zealand over the previous couple of years. Of the

197 diagnoses in 2017, 128 were amongst gay, bisexual and different men World Health

Organization love with men, 2 of that were infected either through sex with another man or

injecting drug use. Of these 101 were 1st diagnosed in New Zealand and twenty -seven had

antecedently been diagnosed overseas. The amount diagnosed in New Zealand in 2017 is lower

in comparison to 164 gay, bisexual and men World Health Organization love with men

diagnosed in New Zealand in 2016,24 individuals (12 men and 12 women) were infected through

heterosexual contact in 2017. Of these, 17 were 1st diagnosed in New Zealand.

AVERT in East and Southern Africa)(2019) says that East and Southern continent is that the

region hardest hit by HIV. It's home to 6.2% of the world’s population however over 1/2 the

overall range of individuals living with HIV within the world (19.4 million people). In 2016,

there have been 790,000 new HIV infections, 43 of the worldwide totals. South Africa accounted

for 1/3 (270,000) of the region’s new infections in 2016. Another 58 occurred in 8

countries.Republic of Mozambique, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and

African country.420,000 died of AIDS-related sicknesses within the region in 2016, though the

amount of deaths has fallen considerably from 760,000 in 2010.Despite the continued severity of

the epidemic, vast strides are created towards meeting the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets. In 2016, 76

of individuals living with HIV were awake to their standing, 79 of them were on treatment

(equivalent to 60th of all folks living with HIV within the region), and 83 of these on treatment

had achieved microorganism suppression (equivalent to 1/2 all folks living with HIV within the

region).

European countries, nearly 160 000 individuals were diagnosed with HIV within the European

Region in 2017, as well as 25 000 within the EU/EEA. The increasing trend in new HIV

diagnoses continued for the Region overall, despite decreasing rates of recent diagnoses within

World Health Organization says that ISLAMABAD Pakistan is registering about 20,000 new

HIV infections annually, the best rate of increase among all countries within the region, warns

the globe Health Organization (WHO). The international body says mortality among Pakistanis

living with the virus, that causes the deadly AIDS sickness, is additionally rising, in spite of the

supply of deliverance antiretroviral medical aid. The latest government figures show that solely

16 % of the calculable 150,000 individuals living with HIV had been tested and solely 9 % have

access to deliverance treatment. "The remaining 135,000 individuals are walking around within

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Qualitative research is a process of naturalistic inquiry that seeks in-depth understanding of

social phenomena within their natural setting. It focuses on the "why" rather than the "what" of

social phenomena and relies on the direct experiences of human beings as meaning-making

agents in their every day lives (Ferrer & Solomon, 2004, as cited in Qualitative research). It is

used to narrate descriptions gathered from participants by having a conversation, by taking down

notes relating to a participant's behavior in their natural setting or by obtaining narrative records

(Beck & Polit, 2006). The researchers used focus-group discussion in which it involves gathering

people from similar backgrounds or experiences together to discuss a specific topic of interest

(Margan & Ferrer, 2005). With this method, the Grade 11 SBSHS student's awareness about HIV

are collected.

Locale of the Study

The study was conducted at Senior High School within Sapang Biabas Resettlement

Elementary School located at Camachiles Phase 1 Sapang Biabas, Mabalacat City Pampanga.

This school is public, non-beneficial, not-restricted, learning institution that offers Science

Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy Business and Management

(ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) and Technical Vocational Livelihood (TVL)

Sample and Sampling

This study is focus on the awareness of the Grade 11 students of Sapang Biabas Senior

High School. Convenience sampling technique was used in choosing the respondents of this

SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

HIV AWARENESS AMONG SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

research.Convenience sampling is used because it is easy, inexpensive, and convenient.

Convenience samples are useful for certain purposes, and they require very little effort. The

Researchers will use respondents who are available at the moment. The process i handy and

easy, relative to random sampling. using all the available participants with random sampling,

where the researcher must (1) have a well-defined population, (2) construct a list of members of

the population if one is not available, (3) sample randomly from the list, and (4) provide and use

as many respondents from the list as possible. Convenience sampling is effortless(Mehreen

Tahir,2016)

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study were the official Grade 11 students of SBSHS who are enrolled for

the Second Semester of School Year 2018-2019. The researchers randomly pick 4 respondents

per each strand for a total of 20 participants of Grade 11 students in SBSHS.

Research Instruments

The researchers used two research instrument, namely; interview guide and mechanical

instrument in the form of video recorder.

B.Mechanical Instrument

Video recorder was used in order to gather the actual group interview. It seeks to capture

the verbal and non-verbal of the participant's behavior and for the researchers to congruously

prepare the data needed.

SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

HIV AWARENESS AMONG SAPANG BIABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Audio recorder was also used to record the voice of the participants this is the best way

to record the verbal behaviour of the respondents and the researchers about the focus group

deliberation.

C. Data collection and Analysis

First the researchers will prepare the interview guide that is based on the topic.

Afterwards the researchers will go to the validators of the school, And then the members of the

group will be given a task according to the abilities to do it, and after that the researchers will go

to the Principal office to submit the letter to perform an interview among the Grade 11 students

of SBSHS upon approval the researchers will proceed to the designated place that was given

unto them the researcher will conduct the research outside the classroom, after that the

researchers will proceed by asking the student about the study, while asking the student the

researchers will provide a recording materials to record everything they say, and then the

researcher will gather all the collected data to ready for discussion, afterwards the researcher will

combine all similar data to get a Intial theme until the Final theme, and lastly after every step

they took the researcher will draw the conclusion.
