ABSTRACT

Title: OPLAN TOKHANG: The Changes in the Lives

of Drug Surrenderees in Aguso, Tarlac City

Researchers: Eugene Quiazon, Micole A. Dula, Joven M. Berboso

Subject: Practical Research 1

Track & Strand: Academic- Humanities and Social Sciences

Institution: Alvindia-Aguso High School

This qualitative research aimed to determine the changes that happened to

the lives of drug surrenderees in Barangay Aguso during the implementation of

Philippine drug war campaign otherwise known as the Oplan Tokhang. The

researchers found out that the drug surrenderees have undergone some changes in

their Drug Usage, Health, Family Relationship and Social Life. There were also

changes in the employment of one of the participants but not as much as what

they have experienced in their Drug Usage, Health, Family Relationship and

Social Life.

This study shows that the campaign had decreased and lessens the

frequency of the surrenderees’ drug intake after some period of time. The health

of the surrenderees, mental and physical, was also affected during the first few

days of their surrender because they cannot find peaceful sleeps and always

worrying about their identity as drug personality. Then one of the surrenderees

said he also experienced some changes in his work as a driver in the first few days
iv

of Oplan issues. The other surrenderees said there was no changes in their

employment resulted by the campaign.

Furthermore, the relationship of the surrenderees to their family and

fellows in the society was also affected by the Oplan Tokhang.

Based from the answers of the surrenderees, the researchers concluded

that confidentiality among them as a center to a sensitive issue and

misunderstanding of the other people about their situation was the roots of the

changes in their lives.

It was recommended that authorities and barangay officials, family

members, schools, students, youth, and future researchers must address the issues

among drug surrenderees through better understanding of their situation to help

them adapt into the changes in their lives resulted by the campaign.
