Reflection
“After the Dark”

What happen if the world faces the extinction of human race and there’s a
supply but it is only limited to 10 people and can only be sufficient for a year?
There, the problem rises. You have a group of 21. Who’s valuable enough to
extend the limited resources and survive the apocalypse?
“After the Dark” movie caught my attention because of the thought
experiment suggested by their instructor. It amazed me how they expand their
imagination and came up with their decisions. It started in an apocalypse- an
atomic bomb and then they draw a piece of paper in a box with a profession on
it. And each one will state their profession and the other will decide if they will
let them inside the bunker or not. I realized in this situation that unwanted
circumstances change people just to meet a certain goal. And this was seen in
the movie when they let go of their principle, that regardless of numbers a
murder is a murder. They decided who will survive and who will not based on
the profession they had. Second, people became irrational. In the movie, they
became irrational because they decided without analyzing everything such as
the purpose of the wild card and how it will affect them knowing that this person
knew the passcode to open the bunker but nothing was stated about his
profession. I realized that because of these attitudes, we will face death in agony
and regrets because of so many what ifs.
In the second round of the thought experiment, they met again the same
problem as the first round. The difference is that every bunker must have at least
on pregnancy. There’s also some added information inside their profession cards.
In this part, this passage stuck in my mind- “No one in this world is define only
by his or her skillset.” I agree to this statement because we must not judge a
person by his/her outside appearance or his standing in life. Every person has
different goal in life and who knows that maybe the one being judge now can be
your only option in the future. Another dialogue also caught my interest, “We are
pushing logic hard to try to survive. We are extreme philosophers because we
have big problem to solve? But philosophy isn't morality and even logic has it's
limit.” It is just like stressing yourself because you have a goal to be accomplish
in that day. Well in fact, you can finish your goal in another way without putting
pressure on you. Because sometimes we just need to start thinking simple
before going extreme. Fina solution in the simplest way before considering the
difficult one.
In the third iteration, one student takes control. She picked those
professions like the harpist, wine auctioneer and the opera singer. What follows
is a year full of creativity and fun. They live their life to the fullest. No more agony
and sufferings like the first and the second round. They just enjoy every moment
of their lives. Until a year had passed, when they can get out and discover the
bombs never fell. The teacher points out, they don't have a lot of survival skills,
so won't survive for long anymore. And the girl named Petra said, “We live.
Briefly? yes... Imperfectly? of course... Stupidly? sometimes... But we don't mind,
because that's the way we're made. And when it's time to die, we don't resist
death, we summon it.” This hit me and I realized that we must not fear death as
long as we enjoyed every moment of our life without leaving what ifs in the past.
So as long as we lived, we must take every opportunity given to us by God. We
must not burden ourselves with problems and just enjoy the taste of it and take
it as a lesson to be stronger, braver and smarter.
This movie makes me realized things. That is no one can decide who will
survive in an apocalypse, what’s important in the new world and is the survival
of human species the most important. All ways have flaws and every solution we
think has drawbacks. Only God knows the answer to these questions.
