2. A circular plate 3 m diameter having a concentric circular hole of diameter 1.5 is immersed in
water in such a way that it’s greatest and least depths below the free surface of water are 4 m and
1.5 m respectively. Sketch the arrangement, determine the total pressure on one face of a plate

15.10 cm. Both cylinders are 25 cm high. The space between the cylinders is filled with a liquid.
If a torque of 1.20kg-m is required to rotate the inner cylinder at 100 r p m, determine the

19. Each gate of lock is 6 m high and 5 m wide, supported on one side by two hinges, each 0.5 m
from top and from bottom. The angle between the gates in closed position is 120 degrees. If the
water levels are 5 m and 1.25 m on the upstream and downstream side respectively, find
a)magnitude of resultant water pressure
b)position of resultant water pressure from bottom of the gate
c)reaction at top hinge
d)reaction at bottom hinge. Assume reaction between the gates is in same horizontal plane as that

21. Compute a horizontal and vertical components of the total force acting on a curved surface AB,
which is in the form of a quadrant of a circle of radius 2 m as shown in fig . Take width of the

22. Determine the total pressure on a circular plate of diameter 1.5m which is placed vertically in
water in such a way that the centre of the plate is 3m below the free surface of water. Find the

23. A cubical tank has sides of 1.5m. It contains water for the lower 0.6 m depth. The upper
remaining part is filled with oil. Sp. Gr of oil is 0.9. Calculate for one vertical side of the tank a)

24. Explain total force and cetre of pressure of an immersed surface. (June 15)

25. Each gate of a lock gate is 9 m high. When the gates are closed, they make an angle of 120
degree. The width of the lock is 10 m . each gate is supported by two hinges located at 1 m and
6m above the bottom of the lock. The depth of water on the two sides are 8m and 4m respectively.
Find 1) resultant water force on each gate. 2) Reaction between the gates. 3) Force on each hinge,
considering the reaction of the gate acting in the same horizontal plane as resultant water pressure.

26. Explain how you would find the resultant pressure on curved surface immersed in a liquid.

27. A square disc of side 1m is immersed vertically in water so that an edge of the square makes an
angle of 35 deg with the horizontal. If the highest corner is at a depth of 1.5 m below the free
surface, find the total pressure on the lamina and the depth of centre of pressure. (Dec 13)

28. A cylindrical gate of 4m diameter 2 m long has water the upstream side to the full height as
diameter and downstream side to half the height as radius. Determine the magnitude , location and
direction of the resultant force exerted by the water on the gate . find also the best weight of the
cylinder so that it may not be lifted away from the floor. (Dec 13, June 11)

29. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant water pressure acting on a curved face of a dam
which is shaped according to the relation (y=x2/6). The height of water retained by the dam is 12
m. take the width of dam as unity. (Dec 13).

30. Distinguish between manometers and mechanical gauges. What are the different types of
mechanical pressure gauges. (June 12)

31. A tank contains water up to height of 0.5 m above the base. An immiscible liquid of Sp. Gr . 0.8
is filled on the top of water up to 1m height, calculate i) total pressure on one side of the tank
ii)the position of centre of pressure for one side of the tank which is 2m wide. (June 12)
