We recommend checking with your till provider to ensure that the software version required is compatible with the
till system in use.

What happens if I don’t update my terminals?


You may become liable for any fraudulent contactless transactions and/or any fines levied by Visa, Mastercard,
and American Express for non-compliance.

I don’t accept Contactless – do I still need to download the new configuration?


Visa requires that all devices accepting Visa payments must support Contactless by 1st January 2020. You will
need to have completed a configuration update by this date.
Verifone would however still recommend upgrading to latest terminal software regardless of Contactless
acceptance.

Does this apply to any other card schemes?


A change was implemented against Visa cards in September 2017.
Mastercard has mandated a similar change be implemented by 1st March 2018. A change for American Express
will be implemented at the same time.

Does this apply to all merchants?
The change applies to all merchants, though there are some allowances.

 Exceptions are granted for Attended or Unattended payments at clients with the following Merchant
Category Codes:

Merchant Category Code Business Type


8398 Charitable and Social Service Organisations
5811, 7922, 7929, 7941, 7999 Mass Events, Festivals, Concerts and Sporting Arenas

 Exceptions are granted for Unattended payments at clients with the following Merchant Category
Codes:

Merchant Category Code Business Type


4111 Transportation — Local Commuter Passenger, including Ferries
4112 Passenger Railways
4131 Bus Lines
7523 Vehicle Parking Lots and Garages
4784 Bridge and Road Fees — Tolls
5499 Vending Machines

We may ask to verify your Merchant Category Code with your acquirer, to ensure the correct card scheme rules
are applied.

Will I see any change in transaction speed?


Most merchants will see no difference in contactless transaction speed.
Payments will follow the same process that is already in place for Apple Pay and Android Pay.

Will I see any change in transaction behaviour?


You may see some contactless transactions legitimately being declined – this could be due to reasons such as:
lack of available funds, a card being reported lost/stolen, or the account closed.
