Guiding Questions:

1. Do all the molecules contain only single bond? Why do you think this is the case?

- Yes, they only contain single bond. They are alkanes which are the simplest organic molecules,
consisting solely of singly-bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms. Hydrocarbon that contains only
single carbon to carbon bonds. Basically, it allows the carbon atoms to bond with as many
hydrogen atoms as allowed by carbon's bonding principles therefore it is considered a single-
bond.

2. Because (Carbon) black is the only element that can form long chains by bonding itself over and
over, it is the backbone of elements of all living things. What is unique about carbon that allows it
to form these big chains?

- Because each carbon is identical, they all have four valence electrons, so they can easily bond
with other carbon atoms to form long chains or rings. In fact, a carbon atom can bond with
another carbon atom two or three times to make double and triple covalent bonds between
two carbon atoms.

3. Two molecules (methane and propane) that you made are used by people to as a fuel (for energy).
What does each of these molecules have in common?

- Although they are figuratively not the same, they are both flammable hydrocarbon gases. In this
context, they are used for many of the same applications.

Methane and propane are linear singly-bonded hydrocarbons called alkanes. The alkanes are
non-polar, insoluble in water, less dense than water and flammable in air. They have similar
chemical properties but gradually changing physical properties as the length of the carbon chain
increases. They can be solids, liquids or gases at room temperature depending on their chain
length. In other words, they (molecules) are structurally similar.
