To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to recommend William Naylor for admission to your program. I had the pleasure of teaching Will his freshman year in English, his sophomore year in Department of Special Programs and Services Lab, and his junior year in British Literature. As his English teacher, I have seen many examples of his determination and have been impressed by his growth as a young man. Will is a hard working, passionate, focused, young man. Will came in as a freshman with much to learn socially, academically, and emotionally. He is the type of kid that jumps in head first and figures things out as he goes. Will began high school thinking that he could figure it all out in one day, and he slowly learned that big changes in life take time. I have been blessed to see the growth and maturity that has happened to Will over the last four years. During Will’s freshman year he rarely missed an assignment, but he took little time to make sure that he understood the skills required for the assignment. Will was about completing the task rather than learning. As high school progressed and work became increasingly difficult, this did not work for Will. His junior year Will began to push himself as a writer and as an overall student. Will was focused more on learning rather than simply completing his homework. For example, Will met with me many times while working on his research paper his junior year. He chose a particularly difficult topic, but Will did not shy away from the challenge. Will worked and worked on his analysis portion of the paper. We met one-on-one after class, during lunch, and even during his DSPS lab. He would not leave until he understood exactly what was required of him. Many students meet with a teacher for the sake of meeting, but do not take the time to understand everything shared. Will took the time. Will cared and continues to care about his education. He has learned that if he is to be successful, he must be the motivating factor. Will has been the leader of a club at school for the last two years, and I am the faculty advisor. Every Friday this club meets, and they play a video game called Super Smash Brothers. Will has created a safe environment for a particular group of students who are all searching for their place in high school. Will has given them a home. I have truly enjoyed being the teacher advisor to the club because I have seen a group of students who are normally shy and quiet find their place in high school together. Will gave this to them. Will has taken the responsibility seriously. I am honored to recommend Will for your program. This hard working, focused student will be an asset to any group. He has made me proud and humbled to be his teacher. Will would make a fine addition to any campus community and would only add to that institution’s integrity.
