LOGARITHMIC FUNCTIONS EXAMPLES WITH ANSWER

1. log416

Okay what we are really asking here is the following.

log416=? log416=?

As suggested above, let’s convert this to exponential form.

log416=?⇒ 4?=16 log416=?⇒ 4?=16

Most people cannot evaluate the logarithm log416log416 right off the top of
their head. However, most people can determine the exponent that we need
on 4 to get 16 once we do the exponentiation. So, since,

42=16 42=16

we must have the following value of the logarithm.

log416= 2log416=2

2. log216

This one is similar to the previous part. Let’s first convert to exponential form.

log216=?⇒ 2?=16log216=?⇒ 2?=16

If you don’t know this answer right off the top of your head, start trying
numbers. In other words, compute 2222, 2323, 2424, etc until you get 16. In
this case we need an exponent of 4. Therefore, the value of this logarithm is,

log216=4log216=4

Before moving on to the next part notice that the base on these is a very
important piece of notation. Changing the base will change the answer and so
we always need to keep track of the base.
3. log6216

We’ll do this one without any real explanation to see how well you’ve got the
evaluation of logarithms down.

log6216=3 because 63=216 log6216=3 because 63=216

4. log51/125

Now, this one looks different from the previous parts, but it really isn’t any
different. As always let’s first convert to exponential form.

log51125=?⇒ 5?=1125 log51125=?⇒ 5?=1125

First, notice that the only way that we can raise an integer to an integer power
and get a fraction as an answer is for the exponent to be negative. So, we
know that the exponent has to be negative.

Now, let’s ignore the fraction for a second and ask 5?=12 55?=125. In this
case if we cube 5 we will get 125.

So, it looks like we have the following,

log51125=−3 because 5−3=153=1125log51125=−3 because 5−3=153=1125

5. log1/381

Converting this logarithm to exponential form gives,

log1381=?⇒ (13)?=81 log1381=?⇒ (13)?=81

Now, just like the previous part, the only way that this is going to work out is if
the exponent is negative. Then all we need to do is recognize
that 34=8134=81 and we can see that,

log1381=−4 because (13)−4=(31)4=34=81log1381=−4 because

(13)−4=(31)4=34=81
6. log3/2278

Here is the answer to this one.

log32278=3 because (32)3=3323=278

7. log1000

log1000=3log⁡1000=3 because 103=1000103=1000.

8. log1100l

log1100=−2log⁡1100=−2 because 10−2=1102=110010−2=1102=1100.

9. log 1/e

ln1e=−1ln⁡1e=−1 because e−1=1ee−1=1e.

10. log3434

log3434=1log3434=1 because 341=34341=34. Notice that this one will work

regardless of the base that we’re using.
