Record-breaking South Korean boy band BTS (aka Bangtan Boys) balance an

energetic blend of dance-pop and hip-hop with deeply introspective lyrics, which helped
them build a devoted global following while also becoming the most successful K-pop
act in U.S. chart history. Debuting in the early 2010s with their Skool trilogy, they
steadily expanded their audience until breaking into the mainstream consciousness with
the Love Yourself series. In May 2018, their third official full-length, Love Yourself: Tear,
topped the Billboard 200, becoming the first K-pop to hit number one in the U.S. and the
highest-charting album by an Asian act to date.

Formed by producer Bang Si Hyuk, the septet's lineup includes RM (Kim

Namjoon), team leader and rapper; Jin(Kim Seokjin), singer; Suga (Min Yoongi),
rapper; J-Hope(Jung Hoseok), rapper and choreographer; Jimin Park, singer and
choreographer; V (Kim Taehyung), singer; and Jungkook Jeon, singer, rapper, and
choreographer. In addition to production and composition, the members of BTSalso
write their own lyrics, which tackle topics like mental health, self-acceptance, and
empowerment.
Awards and achievements

BTS have received many awards and honors, including 15 Melon Music Awards,
15 Mnet Asian Music Awards, 14 Golden Disc Awards, 12 Seoul Music Awards,
10 Gaon Chart Music Awards, 4 Billboard Music Awards (first Korean group), 4 Korean
Music Awards, and one American Music Award (first Korean group). In Korea, BTS
have 2 Multi-Million albums and one Million album.

As the first Korean group to receive RIAA certification, BTS have two Platinum
singles, 3 Gold singles, and one Gold album in the United States. In Japan, BTS have
2 Multi-Platinum singles, one Multi-Platinum album, and 3 Gold albums.

BTS also have a large social influence and as of 2019 have attained ten Guinness
World Records, including the world record for most Twitter engagements. To date they
have spent 135 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Social 50 chart. In October 2018, BTS was
awarded a fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South
Korea for their contributions in spreading Korean culture and language. The members of
BTS became members of the Recording Academy in 2019 in honor of their
contributions to music and as part of a push to help diversify Grammy Award voters.
Why did I choose BTS as a good leader? Back in high school I was lonely and lost,
until I discovered this group called BTS.

Lots of people are being close minded about k-pop and being normalized as if this
genre is just for 12 years old girls. The way that they are already being racist just
because they are singing in Korean language, the way they style their hair and clothes
and mostly their nationality is Korean. Isn't it ironic? they listen to 'Despacito' and never
bring up about the language of the song but they are being bashful when it comes to
Korean songs?

I find BTS is a good leader for me because they're the first Korean Pop group who
joins hands with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to stage campaigns
against violence. Towards children and teens around the world, with the hope of making
the world a better place through music. UNICEF and global pop sensations BTS
launched Generation Unlimited campaign in front of world leaders at at the United
Nations General Assembly yesterday, calling on leaders to "hear the voices of 1.8
million young people" around the world.

Building on their 'Love Myself' UNICEF campaign, lead singer RM from BTS spoke to
both world leaders and fans across the world: "Let’s all take one more step. We have
learned to love ourselves. They speak to world's youth by their music. Imagine a Korean
pop group brings peace and help the youth to love themselves not just in unicef but also
their music? They don't just make music from non-sense. Every verse, every song has a
deep meaning and understanding that touch every fans heart.
